Simon Baker hearts America

Simon Baker says he has been thinking about applying for US citizenship since Barack Obama's win.

Simon Baker is considering changing allegiances to America and taking out US citizenship.

Baker, star of the biggest new hit of the Fall season, The Mentalist, said he was thinking about applying for US citizenship after being inspired by Barack Obama’s win.

“The morning after your election in November, I said to my wife, Rebecca, ‘You know, I’m thinking about becoming an American’,” Baker has told Parade magazine.

“Then she said that she felt the same way.”

The actor, who was born in Tasmania, said he had been too busy to get the ball rolling, but that “it’s going to happen”.

Baker found fame in TEN’s E Street and later starred in The Guardian.

Last year former Home & Away actress Melissa George said she too had taken out US citizenship.

  1. Did anyone notice that today (yes 5th Jan) this was reported as brand new news by Richard Reid reporting for Today show.
I had to doublecheck date I first heard it…
Must have been slow news day or someone’s copy of Tvtonight got lost on way to USA studio.

  2. I agree with JD too, I also think that neither Simon nor Melissa should ever get an article devoted to them in the Australian press ever again. I cannot think of anything more horrifying than becoming an American citizen.

I wonder if Linneys will continue to use Melissa – Australia isn’t her home anymore so shouldn’t they choose a new, worthy ambassador? (little off topic sorry)

  3. well i think its quite simple why they do this; it helps their image.

everyone likes to know that their country has good talent. we wouldn’t want an American actor fronting and aussie drama, and if they did i’m sure we’d be happy if they turned into an official aussie.

basically simon and melissa have reached a point in their career where they can say their future is quite secure in america and won’t have to downgrade back to aus. so they may aswell commit and further secure it.

yes, its sad. but its reality. its all about fame and fortune for them.

  4. I went to Ballina High with him. Back then he was an egotistical pain in the neck…if he still is, American citizenship will be perfect for him 🙂

  5. What is it with all these australian actors, who become sucessful in the US and decide to give up there citizenship of one country to become an American Citizen, purely for money!!!
Melissa George is another one who has done this, and no, this is not a case of sour grapes, it means they don’t give a f*** about there own birthplace, and everything about being able to afford another Mercedes Benz or a 2nd Mansion in Malibu.

  6. I liked ep 10 as well, very interesting theme of ethics in medical research. As with criminal intent, i think the quality dipped quite a bit after the 5th season, but it is still watchable.

  7. That’s disappointing. I met him many years ago and he was full of derision for the over-the-top behaviour of Yanks. He told me how much he disliked “Forrest Gump” and the way the American film audiences behaved at a viewing he was at. Oh well…I guess money and career are important.

  8. Yeah I agree it’s a great show but no different to all the other procedurals (which i love btw!)

And ducko was thinking the same thing re dual citizenship.

  9. The Mentalist is one of my favourite series at the moment. Great storylines, rich characters and a compelling pace. Its the only cop show besides Life I enjoy watching. I just finished ep 10, it just gets better every episode. I tried watching an ep of Law and Order:CI but just couldn’t get into it as the quality was such a drop.
