gerard, wouldn’t get my hopes up too high, one day without cricket (thursday) and they lose 400k. the cricket hasn’t given any momentum at all.

i’m sure come the tennis they will have lost all cricket viewers and will return to their 900k’s

  2. gerard January 11, 2009 at 9:52 pm -

WOW! I hope Nine keep up the great work with the news. No doubt this is thanks to the WWoS Cricket, but hopefully it lasts throughout the year!

    Choose Nine in 09!

  3. RichoTB January 11, 2009 at 3:39 pm -

In Plain Sight is still getting better ratings than Ten’s double House repeats (100k more). If they had sense they would put IPS on at Wed 8:30pm or 9:30pm instead of just pulling it entirely.

  4. Tepee January 9, 2009 at 6:07 pm -

Seeing as my VCR recently broke and I don’t have a PVR/TiVO/et al, it was a tough choice whether to stick with Eli Stone or try out Carla Cametti P.D. In the end I watched Eli, but hopefully SBS will repeat CCPD at some point (as they are with Skins) or I’ll catch it on DVD.

    Sunday Feb 8.

  6. Mike K January 9, 2009 at 1:20 pm -

David when does ratings period start back? I see Ten is bringing some of its shows back on 1 February 2009 (namely Dance and Loser) but as I recall the official ratings period doesn’t normally start until mid-February – is that correct?

  7. Edu January 9, 2009 at 1:09 pm -

I was in the gym yesterday doing my cardio and both 6pm news on 7 and 9 are showing side by side. funny enough, the only difference is the presenter but the news content are very much exactly alike and tehy are reporting on it almost at the same time. Switch the logo and the presenter and you won’t see the difference. I say people watch the news can be mostly influenced by the lead-ins or jsut plain loyalty to the station unless of course the remote is missing or somebody has sat on it.

  8. Craig January 9, 2009 at 12:13 pm -

Carla Cametti PD did pretty good, as did Heroes in the earlies time slot.

  9. lee123 January 9, 2009 at 11:43 am -

TV worker, of course a good lead in can’t hurt, but there is much debate as to how much influence the lead in has to the news. for most of 25 years 7 had 5:30 under its belt with wheel of fortune. while 9 cycled through young doctors, catch phrase, price is right, a handful of factuals and family feud. yet the people watching 7 dropped come 6:00, they barely won a day to 9.

as a control case: there have been a few saturdays and sundays this year where (in melbourne atleast) the lead ins are postcards, coxy’s big break, absolutely melbourne, all of which rate pretty much the same. yet 7 news wins by 400k.

there have even been a few days this year where 9 had rugby/cricket as a lead in and still lost by heaps.

  10. TV worker January 9, 2009 at 9:49 am -

i say put deal or no deal on both 9 and seven…tjhey have the same lead in and then we can see who has the more popular news…c’mon do it for two weeks or a month…that would be so funny lol

  11. R January 8, 2009 at 9:04 pm -

“tennis on means 7 will win news. Cricket gets 9 to win news ratings.”

thing is, nine need the cricket lead-in to be able to win the news hour. Seven don’t need a special event/sporting event to do that.

  12. Craig January 8, 2009 at 5:37 pm -

Lost is back in 2 weeks, is ch7 going to fast track it? I guess they have to ’cause lots of people know how to fast track it for them selves now.

  13. Harry January 8, 2009 at 4:43 pm -

NCIS is so consistent.. pity about In Plain Sight getting the flick though when it was getting better..

  14. knoxoverstreet January 8, 2009 at 11:54 am -

NCIS still going strong. Funny how even in rpts this show is still must see tv. Would like to see In Plain Sight doing better though it’s a cool show.

  15. Michael January 8, 2009 at 9:53 am -

Prison break got 350k easily winning its time slot

  16. Tony January 8, 2009 at 9:27 am -

10.30 for Lost? Sheesh! Break out the recorder. And I never get why Scrubs is always on so late. It should be prime time!

  17. RichoTB January 8, 2009 at 1:49 am -

Ugh, I meant at 10:30pm on Sundays, out of Grey’s Anatomy. I predict Seven’s schedule will look something like this come ratings season

    Sun: 8:30 Desperate Housewives / 9:30 Grey’s Anatomy / 10:30 Private Practise-Lipstick Jungle

    Mon:
    8:30 City Homicide / 9:30 Bones / 10:30 Scrubs

    Tues:
    8:30 PTTR / 9:30 All Saints / 10:30 Eli Stone

    Wed:
    8:30 Criminal Minds / 9:30 Brothers and Sisters / 10:30 Heroes

    Thu:
8:30 One of those awful new factual shows, probably about criminals / 9:30 The Amazing Race / 10:30 Lost

  18. RichoTB January 8, 2009 at 1:39 am -

Eli Stone has been steadily gaining viewers now almost at 800k. Even though its canceled it isn’t doing too shabby, Seven should think about making it a 9:30pm show during ratings season, even if its just to plug the holes of a failed show. Come to think of it, if they fast-tracked season 2 to come out of Grey’s Anatomy at 9:30pm on Sundays, I can see that going well, although they’re likely to use that slot for either Lipstick Jungle or Private Practise instead.

  19. leeds January 7, 2009 at 8:29 pm -

any ratins for prison breaks final David?

  20. Craig January 7, 2009 at 8:05 pm -

Love how Temptation (which ch9 dumped) is out rating Sudden Impact Sudden Impact.

  21. Tony January 7, 2009 at 5:38 pm -

The announcement of the new Dr Who didn’t help Party Animals much.

  22. Andrew B January 7, 2009 at 3:36 pm -

Tennis on means 7 will win news. Cricket gets 9 to win news ratings.

Its not only the news and current affairs that benefit from the lead in, you see higher figures continue further – its even helped Temptation!

Networks need to learn and understand how important flow on and lead in is. Its very similar concept to djing at a function or club – if you chop and change your music style every song, you’ll have noone dancing.

  23. knoxoverstreet January 7, 2009 at 1:24 pm -

“Bones performing very well over summer”

With Bones you’ll probably find there are many people like me who missed it first time around & are now fans. I didn’t think much of it originally & only started watching again in S3 & since it’s become one of my favorite shows.

  24. tommyk January 7, 2009 at 12:25 pm -

so 9 news/ACA get a 500k boost with cricket lead in (used to get 900k). i wonder how high 7news/TT (used to get 1.3-1.5mil) will get when they make up all lost ground when the tennis starts and the cricket settles down.

K&K’s numbers rose by 100k after being pushed further into the night. . .odd

  25. Richard W January 7, 2009 at 11:54 am -

What a joke! The ACA story on Magda’s “emotional battle” with weight was just a hidden infomercial for Jenny Craig!

It seems its only current affairs if you pay to get your story told!

  26. Tony January 7, 2009 at 11:30 am -

A month’s delay for the Dr Who Xmas special is a big improvement on last year, when I think the delay was about six months. Didn’t stop me from downloading it on Boxing Day though.

  27. Sillygostly January 7, 2009 at 10:56 am -

How’s Futurama doing? :( Not too well, I’d imagine.

And the new episodes haven’t exactly been rating very well either. What the hell is wrong with Ten? They’re slowly killing both Simpsons and Futurama by pairing them with the most ridiculously incompatible shows.

  28. Brodie January 7, 2009 at 10:49 am -

ACA and 9 News are getting a good boost out of the cricket. Will be interesting to see how much of this audience it can hold on to

HIMYM and Temptation very close, though Temptation particularly had poor retention. Interesting that 2.5 Men beat The Rich List on Sunday, yet The Rich List won on Monday. Perhaps with viewers now knowing TRL is on Sunday’s it will pull out a few more wins?

Bones performing very well over summer, The Mentalist doing about what CSI rpts were doing, which is poor, though these episodes have only just aired.

Judging by Kath & Kim’s big 11.30 numbers, im assuming Scrubs rpts had their usual large 600k audience. So deserves another primetime shot.

Cant blame Ten for removing Next Top Model with an audience like that.

  29. Benno January 7, 2009 at 10:09 am -

Most of the references on the show go over my head, but the situations they get into are really funny. I can sort of see why you gave up with BBT in the first place – when nine yanked it, i wasn’t too fussed either way, but a few months later i thought i might as well watch the rest online and it got a lot better. The one thing that does annoy me with that show is the over the top laugh track, but that’s only occasionally.

  30. knoxoverstreet January 7, 2009 at 1:19 am -

Part of the appeal for me is I’m a bit of a nerd and can relate to all the Trek/sci-fi movie stuff. Hopefully it starts to pick up like it is in the states where it becoming quite the hit for CBS.

  31. RichoTB January 7, 2009 at 12:58 am -

Wow there’s a lot of love for TBBT here. I watched the first few eps and thought it was annoying, the characters were really stereotyped nerds and I didn’t find the constant references to quantum physics and mathematical formulae amusing. It was kind of like Numb3rs as a comedy, although for some reason it didn’t quite work. I might give it another shot though now that ppl are saying its fun, although it might not have the quality of Sunny, it might still be worth another look

  32. Tepee January 6, 2009 at 11:52 pm -

I’d never thought I’d say this but I must agree with those who’ve said they’re enjoying Big Bang Theory. It’s funnier than your average US sitcom, and although occassionally crass, can be clever at times. Although that Sheldon is starting to grate.

  33. Billy January 6, 2009 at 10:16 pm -

Wow at ACA and 9 News. See with a half decent lead in they can actually rate really well. Bones is still doing surprising well. BTW loving the Big Bang Theory at the moment.

  34. lee123 January 6, 2009 at 9:43 pm -

@jerome: i thought the same. that story made me more excited for the new season of K&K.

very unorthodox for ACA to do something tv-related, without finding 50 ways to promote themselves, was anyone watching it in the lead up to the premier of sea patrol?

  35. knoxoverstreet January 6, 2009 at 9:31 pm -

Yeh looks like people just love magda. I watched it (no neighbours!) & I’m hoping magda reaches her goal she’s a lovely person.

    Even Temptation topped 1m

  36. Jerome January 6, 2009 at 9:30 pm -

LOL, ACA finally tops the night and it was through a promotion for a 7 show. <what’s that saying

they showed some of the funniest parts of kath and kim like the (not exact quotes)
    kath:”what are you wearing kim”
kim: “its my new camoflauge tankini”
sharon: “it’s not camouflauging much kim”

  37. Michael January 6, 2009 at 9:02 pm -

Well done to Nine News and ACA. Great to see them back on top.

  38. HaHa January 6, 2009 at 8:46 pm -

A Current Affair topped. I guessing it was the Magda Factor.

Reason 9 and 10′s and S.B.S. problem: They have no idea who their audience is so their programming is all over the place.

At least 7 (lower-middle Australia) and the A.B.C. (Older Educated professionals with a good younger audience on occasions) have an idea who their audience is, and so they have consistent ratings.

  39. Nik C January 6, 2009 at 7:57 pm -

Well I will enter the favourite Channel debate. I dont really have one. I will watch what ever interests me. I vent like all of you, especially when my fave new show gtes axed moved or whatever. But for me it is in cycles. Ch9 irritated me the most by moving Canal Road (still not happy, I need to build a bridge, but wish it had been given a go for a second season). However I know some of my fave timeslots this year will be different, with City Homicide returning from a stupid mid season (we have enough ratings stuff our viewers) to Mondays where Desperate Housewives used to be. (Ch 7 want better ratings on Sunday and Greys is set to follow at 9.30, so where does that Leave my real US fave Brothers and Sisters.
ABC has some great Aussie shows coming this year season 2 of Bed of Roses and East of Everything and. I give Ch 10 a go, but cannot think of much that will grab me at this stage.

  40. Harry January 6, 2009 at 5:11 pm -

    I watched Top Model.

  41. knoxoverstreet January 6, 2009 at 4:03 pm -

Benno, yeah very funny episode..i love 2.5men but i think tbbt has surpassed it as my favorite sitcom.

  42. knoxoverstreet January 6, 2009 at 4:02 pm -

tommyk don’t be silly, there’s plenty of irrational nine bashing on here. can we just leave this forum for discussion of ratings?

cpandilo..2.5 Men is the perfect lead in but the new eps next year will rate much better giving TBBT a much better lead in. Season 6 is supposed to be brilliant so it should rate very well next year.

  43. Benno January 6, 2009 at 3:46 pm -

Was sunday’s Big Bang Theory the one about the peanut reaction? That episode was hillarious.

  44. tommyk January 6, 2009 at 3:15 pm -

ok, i’m not going to hold this in.

knoxoverstreet, many of us have networks that we prefer, but no one has taken it as far as you, and lots of people on this site have realised.

your not helping anyone it, everything you say is so unbalanced and uncredible. nobody listens to people like that, why would you waste your time on a site like this.

PS. may i ask, why 9? what have they done to deserve such loyalty?

  45. cpandilo January 6, 2009 at 2:27 pm -

The Big Bang Theory getting 944,000 for its timeslot at this time of year is quite good, considering that it got eighth place overall on Sunday night and it won its timeslot in total people so I am quite happy – though I’d rather see prime-time programs at this time of year get at least 1 million which Two And A Half Men is getting so I’m happy.

knoxoverstreet, what lead in would you have in mind for The Big Bang Theory? I think Two And A Half Men is doing a good job. Though they could both do better on Mondays.

  46. knoxoverstreet January 6, 2009 at 2:15 pm -

JJR I notice your not a little sick of all the anti-Nine or pro-Seven comments *insert sarcastic smilie* Clearly your a 7 fan. Just chillax dude we all have our favorite stations not just me!

I’d advise you don’t read my comments in future for the sake of your health !

  47. Craig January 6, 2009 at 1:43 pm -

I need to clarify I like 2.5 Men it’s mindless fun, but unless I’m waiting for the next show I’m not watching endless re-runs 10 times a week!

BTW all the networks do dumb programing moves, what happened to Knight Rider ch7 promised or Primeval on ch9, and does ch10 have the rights to Started Wife season 2? And it’s not just the commercial channels, ABC waiting a month to air the Doctor Who xMas special and SBS with Top Gear more than 2 months old. These last 2 are top show we want to see now!

In the case of Doctor Who why wait a month? Is it for the rating because correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the ABC a commercial free channel so rating don’t matter for ad revenue?

    Sorry for the rant.

  48. David Knox January 6, 2009 at 1:33 pm -

Some people are very passionate about their favourite network yes….The username confusion on this particular site doesn’t help me any either….

  49. JJR January 6, 2009 at 1:26 pm -

I’m a little sick of reading a pro-Nine comment from “knoxoverstreet” on almost every article on here. Regardless of whether me or other readers agree or not, it’s absolutely comic how much spin he or she puts on everything!

“Tone it down in ’09″ please mate!!

  50. knoxoverstreet January 6, 2009 at 1:04 pm -

I dunno BBT getting almost 1m on a low rating night isn’t too shabby. With a larger lead in it could easily get 1m+ and be a winner for Nine especially as it does well in the younger demos. Good to see 2.5 Men rpts pick up as well bodes well for the excellent 6th season which is rating through the roof in the states.

  51. live89 January 6, 2009 at 12:56 pm -

I bet those Rich List contestants are happy these episodes are finally airing (especially the winners who walked away with 400k and 100k!)

I’m surprised TT hadn’t jumped on the same ship as ACA (Investigating National Bingo Night), by looking into all those filmed episodes of 1 vs 100 that have been filmed, but have not aired……Not that im complaining. That sort of dog shit journalism needs to outlawed.

  52. phillips January 6, 2009 at 11:50 am -

Channel 7 cost the Rich List 100k to 200 k in viewers, because it didn’t advertise that it was on, on Sunday very well. No one knew about it, and we watched idiotic 2.5 men without knowing.

  53. RichoTB January 6, 2009 at 1:52 am -

BBT dropped almost 200,000 viewers after 2.5 men, I really thought it might actually turn into a hit for Nine. I guess not. They’re starting season 2 now though which is probably a good thing, seeing as Til Death is all but axed in the US and it may not be around on Nine for much longer.

I watched a bit of Shallow Hal n enjoyed it, but it was only around 5 mins. I might have to d/l the rest and see how the start went.

And after a slightly lacklustre 3rd season it was good to see The Office get some comedy back into itself in last night’s ep. Good stuff, pity I’m not an Oztam/Nielsen/whatever it is that gets counted for ratings household

  54. Craig January 5, 2009 at 10:11 pm -

2.5 Men is building again (guess the idiots are back from holidays LOL) good to see Big Bang is holding on with almost 1 Million, hope it stays and we don’t have 10x 2.5 Men this year.

  55. Tony January 5, 2009 at 2:56 pm -

Magnificent 7 deserved better. It was excellent.

  56. nick January 5, 2009 at 11:04 am -

hope nine is somehow capturing its news winning moments. that way it’ll last longer
