Coronation Street to be sold?

Speculation that ITV may make major changes to production of Coronation Street and Emmerdale due to the global recession.

street1The impact of the global recession continues to impact on air with speculation that long-running British soap Coronation Street may be sold off to an independent production company due to severe cutbacks at ITV.

The legendary series may no longer be produced by Granada Television. And as an “interim measure”, Emmerdale may start to be made in Manchester rather than by Yorkshire Television in Leeds.

Last week, ITV’s executive chairman Michael Grade conceded, “I have seen the cycle come and go over the years. I have never seen anything quite as dramatic or quite as profound as this in terms of the effect on advertising revenues.”

An ITV spokesman confirmed that the broadcaster is currently holding talks over its future, but dismissed claims that its production wing would be closed altogether.

He said: “As you know, operational reviews are taking place to ensure that ITV is in the best shape to meet the unprecedented challenges facing the economy, but there are no plans to drastically scale back, or shut, ITV Studios.”

Both soaps air in Australia on the UKTV Channel.

  1. Has coronation street been taken off 7two permanently? It was shown at 10:00am every day, and also very early in the morning, however it is not in the tv guide this week. Hopefully it is only off whilst the tennis on. Can anyone tell me what is happening please.

  2. Yes P, that would be him…ITV is in huge strife as a result of the economy, they are making cuts all over the place, they have axed “Heartbeat” and “The Royal” and “The Bill” has seen its output halved to 1 episode a week from later this year…Emmerdale moving to Manchester would be odd, a Yorkshire soap thats not made in Yorkshire..bizarre!

  3. hmmmm, isn’t this the same Michael Grade, ex BBC 1 Controller, who famously axed Doctor Who in the 80s because it was ‘rubbish’? Also stopped importing Dynasty? And came perilously close to axing Blackadder because it was unfunny?
