Fostering another Australian Story

Australian Story has secured rare access to show the trials and tribulations of a foster parenting arrangement in action.

4Monday night’s Australian Story on the ABC brings rare access in conjunction with the NSW Department of Community Services to the trials and tribulations of a foster parenting arrangement in action.

Three years ago Yael Abraham was a single woman and a successful lawyer turned real estate agent.

But money and a good career left her feeling unfulfilled and empty.

In her late 40s and with no children of her own, Yael took a radical step and decided to become a foster mother.

In a single afternoon she became the sole parent to four troubled children.

“I will never forget when the car arrived in my driveway. The four most beautiful children you have ever seen came out. Tiny, small, gorgeous…and a little frightened of course with this woman and what is she going to do with you Yael.

Yael has nurtured a relationship with the children’s biological mother, Michelle, believing that it is important for the children to have her in their lives.

But when Michelle gets pregnant again with twins and then again with another child, what happens to these ties that bind?

Australian Story airs 8pm Monday on ABC1.

  1. Yael, I am humbled after seeing you on Australian Story. You are a lovely, selfless person and have truly given life to these six children. I can only hope that you will be able to do the same for the seventh child and keep your family intact. As for the so called “birth family”. I was shocked and appalled by their stupid comments. From what I saw, your older girls are a credit to you and have obviously come a long way. God bless you.

  2. Yael, I wish I could do what you are doing but the sadness would overwhelm me if I knew I may have to return the children to their mother when I would know it would not be in their best interest. I wish you every best thing in your life for loving and nurturing these little helpless treasures.

  3. Yael,
You are a dream come true for these children. It seems such a shame that the ungrateful comments from the birth Mother and Grandmother has created a schism between the two families. I certainly hope DOCS lets the seventh child join its siblings.

I certainly hope the birth Mother gets the tube tying done and finishes putting more children in harms way. Perhaps we should be looking at a rule of no more children for families who have already had children taken away by DOCS.

Madam ! It was not DOCS who stuffed up your life. Grow up,get your life back together and keep in contact with your children. You should be thanking Yael for giving those dear babies a second chance at life. No wonder they dont want to have any more contact.

  4. Yael, what an amazing contribution you have made to the world by giving these children a life. I am so upset, troubled and angry to have watched the irresponsible birth mother make the ridiculous comments that DOCS have ruined her life by removing the children, when it was her responsibility to give them a caring and upbringing in the first place. Similary the birth mother’s mother made the disgraceful comments of Yael making the children ‘posh’ and the children not wanting to see their birth family as a result. What child with such scars would want to go anywhere near their original parent? What has the world come to when pitiful people with no responsibility continue to have children and then have the cheek to complain when they are given a better life? One can only ponder why such a women is given such a fruitful womb when so many more deserving women are barren or struggling with IVF. Yael, you are a true hero!

  5. Yael, I am so impressed with your commitment to those children. It’s is just so sad that the birth family are not able to see that they now have a future. How sad it is that the birth grandmother cannot see that you only want the best for these children Instead she now directs her pain at her grandchildren and labels them snobs. Good grief, what did they think was going to happen? Children deserve to be properly cared for and, hallelujah! now they are!!
