Logies cuts looming

If your Logie invitation gets lost in the mail this year, here's why.

logie-nomineesTwo event companies have been asked to bid for this year’s Logies and deliver a more economic product than the usually lavish shindig we’re accustomed to.

TV Week editor Emma Nolan yesterday confirmed the financial belt would be tightened on the awards.

“We are now in the process of reviewing the invitation list and are also looking at budget cuts,” Nolan told News Limited.

“But it’s a very important year for the Logies as they’re the 51st, representing a new era for the awards in terms of the event, coverage and actual show.

“So while there will be cuts, they will be minimal.”

The annual industry event is again to be held at Crown Casino in May.  The Queensland Government was reported to be unofficially courting the event for 2010.

Post-show parties hosted by networks Seven, Nine and Ten are also likely to be quieter than usual (one day long instead of three?).

“It will be interesting who gets cut – the stars, ACP staff or the newsagents and advertisers they traditionally invite,” one TV executive said.

  1. Ella, I am only against Logies or all the freebies thrown at so called Netwrok celebs.
As I have said before instead of Crown Casino, make it venue in adelaide or hobart, cut out the excessive luxuries and even ask these “wannabes to put hand in pocket.
after all, it is award show for themselves to make themselves feel important.
I have no beef with “awards for longstanding service in industry but most popular or “give a mate an award for sake of it – come on !
P.S. expects the party popper line to be thrown back at me

  2. yep, get rid of the ‘American star’ who gets paid a fortune for getting boozed up & making a fool of themselves, we have plenty of local celebrities who can do that for free! No but really if they are going to get a yank to come over for the Logies at least make it someone worth seeing drunk, in latter years it usually been some Z-grade celebrity no-one.

  3. aw, why are so many people against the logies what did they ever do to you.

yes, they are not the most professional of award ceremonies but they have never pretended to be. it’s made to just be entertainment, and thats what it is.

and anything that showcases australian tv productions should be encouraged.

  4. Darn! I was hoping they would cut the Logies altogether and replace it with a half-hour show of female “celebrities” walking down a carpet in free designer dresses. Save us time and save them money. The Logies could be randomly handed out as usual.

  5. @Freddy – get of your high horse already. All of those professions have their own ways of recognising great performances but few people besides their own familieis would want to watch it on prime time TV. Like it or lump it sports stars, TV stars and movie stars bring in the advertsing dollars which is what the industry runs on.

  6. Surely the whole point of the Logies is to get the stars so liquored up they make a fool of themselves when giving their acceptance speech. How dull it would be without being able to bet on which “star” will be the alcohol-infused screw-up of the night 😀

  7. it’ll be interesting to see who the american guests are this year. do we already know?

they are usually actor(ess)’s from a popular US dramas. but in the past year there hasn’t been many standout hits from overseas, all the big shows are australian. the only one i can think of is *cringe* 2.5men. all the big new shows from america like fringe, the mentalist, and flashpoint haven’t found an audience.

  8. This whole Logies (and the USA type shows) are a complete watse of time and space.
Why do these people feel the need to beef up their egos each year just for doing their job?
If any industry needs this type of ego trip, it should be
Teachers – for all the hours they spend at home planning, correcting etc which is unpaid. Most parents are so ungrateful they do not deserve kids.
Doctors/Nurses – no need to explain
Police – For trying to make everyones life a bit better and safer.
Public servants (include Labour/Liberal etc) – An award for the most useless idea? An award for most arrogant? etc. That would be fun to watch.

  9. They could save heaps if they get rid of the dinner and have a theatre format instead. It would get rid of all the background noise of clacking silverware and chatter we hear on the broadcast. I love the Logies but I really feel as though the participants don’t take it seriously enough. The winners should be grateful that their work is acknowledged but instead they are like the Aria recipients who can’t string a sentence together and sneer. Maybe they could use the money they save on drinks on a crash course in humility for the nominees.

  10. Wasn’t last years Logies bad enough? I mean no host would have saved them a heap of money and planning. I’m guessing this year there will be no seating, or alcohol?
