  1. Mr Do-Bee, I also agree about Bill Woods. The news is meant to be read without the emphasis he puts into it at the end of most sentences. It irritates me how he does this….and the stupid jokes which he used to try when doing the motor sport.

  2. And a big “well done” to Seven for their extensive news coverage on Sunday . 7am-11am and 4:30-6:30pm. A monumental effort. Excellent work all.

  3. When there are critical news items happening (i.e. the devastating Saturday bushfires) clearly people still turn to television for their news as you can see with Saturday’s top four programs.

  4. well It lookes like the new vision of the the today show did not do well even the weekday one dident sunrise is so much better

I think if the today show took Karl and lisa and cameron off that show would do so much better

    Think about it 9

  5. Mr. Do-Bee – I completely agree with you about Bill Woods replacing Ron Wilson on Ten news. I commented on the story David ran on here a couple of weeks ago when it was Ron’s last day as co-anchor of the 5pm Sydney bulletin and was critical about Ten’s decision to move him. I suggested that Ten could be using the fact that 7 and 9 are replacing their news anchors with “fresher faces” as an opportunity to promote Ten’s news as an experienced team. I completely agree with you that Bill Woods is amateur-ish when compared to Ron Wilson. My point was simply relating to the journalism, reporters and stories, rather than the anchors.

  6. so is this sunday the beginning of the ratings season for 2009? And with Underbelly on Monday it will be a strong lead in for nine for the rest of the week so nine should do a bit better this week

  7. redbullboy, Ten’s Sydney 5pm news has become unwatchable since Bill Woods replaced Ron Wilson. I miss the easy delivery and rapport Ron had with the team. Bill’s stand up lecture on the financial crisis in front of the big screen this week was one of the most awkward pieces to camera I have seen since Jessica Rowe’s debut on Today. It was amateur stuff. Ten need to reinstate the most respected and professional newsreader they have before any more damage is done to the Sydney ratings.

  8. who the hell would want to watch the cricket?? australia suck! totally crap! simpsons was so good last night and so was law and order and when i saw womens murder club i was so happy!! great night on ten, too bad you idiots were watching a failed team fail again lol

  9. The thing people forget is that advertisers – who use the ratings data the most – are most concerned with demographics than total numbers. They wouldn’t advertise Mercedes cars on a show that skewed to incomes under $50K, or tampons on a show that had a big male demographic. Total numbers are nice if you look at it like a horse race, but it’s the details that count when it comes to advertisers putting money into your network.

  10. Re. Ten’s news – I completely agree with Dan. I’ve noticed a huge improvement in Ten’s news coverage over the past few months – they’re certainly making good use of their deals with the US tv networks. In their one hour bulletin Ten has been able to report on stories in much more depth than both 9 and 7, with a level of sophistication that isn’t possible in a shorter report, whilst still providing the shorter clipped-down news grab during the half-hour late news. I’ve also noticed that Ten’s journalism has become increasingly investigative – they report on news that the 7 and 9 don’t pick up. Just goes to show that a tv network doesn’t need to have a current affairs program to make room for more investigative, high quality journalism.

  11. Life on Mars was pretty good, not as good as the British version though.

UK version was little more subtle and John Simm was a more vulnerable Sam Tyler that the more “hero mould” actor in the US version.

James Spader of 10 years ago would have made a more appropriate Sam Tyler, a bit more cerebral character, more like the UK version.

Harvey Keitel played, um Harvey Keitel whereas Philip Glennister was alot more refreshing as Gene Hunt in the UK version.

The “no nuts” comment was funny though.

  12. For the record, it’s just over 3 000 households in the sample, not people. If anyone reads up on statistical analysis – i haven’t in depth, but i have read enough on the subject of TV ratings – they will see that the accuracy is higher than they would expect.

  13. Irishbabe, the peoplemeters haven’t changed all of the sudden, its just that no one wants to watch any of 9’s shows. but i do agree that the solution is in swapping the timetable around. all the leadins, competion slots, timeslots are all wrong. also the 3000 aussies is just a rumour no official number has ever been released.

as for today on sunday. insatead of leila there is livinia (this was before her new gig), sami lukis, sarah murdoch was interested. and if all else fails just audition people. TV could do with some fresh faces.

i too am interested to hear what sam said on the 4:30 news. i think she is one of the most georgeous, nicest, humblest people on tv. and she is easy on the eyes.

  14. yes from what i have heard these ratings box people get to keep the devices for years, i doubt oztam went out and got a whole new crop of people over summer, i’d say these people are the same ones who did it last year and so the shift away from 9 and onto 10 is a real one, these people have actually changed their viewing it is not just a bunch of new people who like 10. 10 have improved the way they are advertising and 9 have garbage shows and tv guides full of tbas so i’d say that the populace is actually doing what the ratings say in this case, although in general i don’t trust them either.

  15. 2.5 men, the sample of homes used by Oztam are a scrutinized cross-section of the community that has the approval of all 3 networks. If a network notices something strange or unfair, then they can challenge the sample chosen for that particular market. Each network has a Research Department that makes sure the data received is as true as it possibly can be, because each network has alot riding on the results. Believe me if Nine thought the sample was unfair, they would be challenging it.

  16. i dunno about this rating system with only 3,000 odd people with people meters.

Isn’t it all to easy, say, these people are fan boys of a certain channel and leave/say they watched a certain channel for a sake of liking that channel more even though they probably didn’t even watch anything on that channel on that time.

  17. Well it would appear the some 3 000 Aussies with people meters have decided against choosing 9 in ’09! An interesting statistic, only approximately 0.02% of our population actually have people meters! Thus why I don’t believe the ratings we are always dished up!

Nine really need to make a few adjustments to their schedule! – They should shift Celebrity Singing Bee to Tuesday 8.30, shift The Mentalist to Thursday 8.30, shift The Farmer Wants A Wife to Wednesday 8.30, put Missing Pieces on Monday 7.30, Getaway Thursday 7.30 and perhaps What’s Good For You or For Richer For Poorer Wednesday 7.30.

Also, a number of people on this site have expressed their hatred towards Cameron Williams and Leila McKinnon, thinking that they’re not suited to their Today on Sunday gig – To those of you who do hate Cam and Leila I wonder who you would have given the gig to? I love both Cam and Leila, as I absolutely hate Andrew O Keefe, and refuse to watch Samantha Armytage after an absolutely disgusting and distasteful comment she made one day on the 4.30 news.

  18. Actually on that note, ten should try moving their news to the 6 to 7pm slot, I watch their news whenever I can but it’s on just that bit too early, They should move Neighbours back to 5.30 and see how it goes there, it’s not doing that good where it is and lets face it, doubt it would worry too many people if it were on earlier.

  19. Woah Nine is in big trouble. Singing Bee ratings not spectacular but 20 to 1 held up well surprisingly. No doubt they’ll remove Ramsay soon enough – good riddance I say. Good on Ten for having a consistent week in the lead-up to ratings. Great ratings for SVU and Life on Mars – all those ads paid off. Without the high-profile slot of Sunday Grey’s gets beaten by SVU but it could be due to the two-hour premiere. Overall solid and consistent ratings get Seven over the line, coupled with the fact that Nine’s 6pm to 7:30 consistently gets much lower ratings that that of Seven’s. Actually, if TEN had news at 6:00 it would provide a huge boost to Neighbours ratings and TEN could really be in contention for more consistent ratings throughout the year. Because let’s face it, Nine and Seven are facing no competition at 6pm. Finally, I hope TEN’s success continues with new Simpsons tonight!

  20. People seem to forget that Thurs night is traditionally a low rating night. Just thought I would throw that up as an explanation for the “low” ratings some shows had. We shall see how they all go, but CH10 and 7 must both be happy. This time next week we will know if Ch9 are happy, but some shows they were banking on didn’t hit it this week.

  21. It’s so nice to see 10 have such amazing success after last year’s horrendous ratings slump. Hopefully, with more people watching their channel, there won’t be a need to keep dropping their shows.

With shows like the singing bee and Wipeout Australia, Nine deserve third place.

  22. Good figures for Life On Mars and SVU.. Tens going really well this year, a great start. Bondi Vet went ok, but I dont think that number will be enough for TEN in future.

  23. Which other Sunday TV guides did nine’s primetime schedule not have TBA’s? It had the their schedule in Queensland’s, how about the other states? The Sunday Mail one was the only print guide which i looked at which doesn’t have TBA’s everywhere from nine.

  24. I loved Life on Mars and thought it was the first US remake to ever improve on the original. Came across as an even more original storyline and that great street scape shot when the camera panned around 360 degrees must have cost a fortune. Hope they keep the production values up!

  25. Remember that Ramsay was not on in Qld (CSI NY) so the overall figure for 9:30 for Nine is 659,000 -but still a long way behind Seven and TEN, and significantly a turn off from its own lead in.

TEN and Seven have certainly struck in the eye of the storm which will help, but it’s not a real race until next week.

  26. well those numbers are ok for greys considering it was 2 hours. and it won all the demos across both of the hours. despite 9’s shows the night turned out to be quite older skewing. 9 came 3rd in all key demos but 2nd in 50+ (which is their first demo not to be 3rd since sunday)

well i guess ghost whisperer should only be shown at 7:30 from now. its been shown all over the clock but 7:30 is the only place that it gets good ratings.

most of last night is set to what will continue into ratings so it looks like ten may keep those good numbers. and 9 will stay in 3rd

  27. for those who are intrested, I was intrested to find out that the no1 program of the night in all demos was greys. I didnt think a show like that would appeal to younger viewers, but it rated 40 in the 16-39! (39 in 18-49, 38 in 25-54). Who would’ve guessed that one!

Even with the cricket on over the next few weeks, i highly doubt it will rate as well as it was during the holidays, coz back then there was nothing else worth watching anyway. But now with an alternative on 7 & 10, that might already have dedicated viewers, viewers might prefer to skip the criket, and just catch the highlights on the news.

  28. ahaha, who would like to bet Channel nine make massive changes beginning next week, I will say Ramsay will get the boot for sure, never did like him and think he is overrated as a chef. As for the rest of their stupid shows, well I would love to be a fly on the wall in the programmers offices. Quite simply what were they thinking, last year they flogged 2.5 men to death and didn’t come up with any answers as a replacement for the 7pm slot this year, they must think people are stupid and will watch repeated rubbish over and over. I was also glad to see celebrity singing bee flop, again they must think the veiwers will watch anything, who really wants to see d grade celebs singing bad.

I’m happy with the way Ten is performing, they have put on some good new shows, just hope everyone sticks with them, I’ve enjoyed them anyway.

I think Grey’s figures weren’t too bad, considering it was on for two hours and it won the 8.30 slot, so seven will keep it there for a bit to see how it settles I think.

So in the wash up, seven is consistant, ten has improved dramatically and well nine are where they should be. Let’s hope nine news in Sydney continues to rate bad as well. If you want to see the best news coverage, watch the ABC at 7pm or Ten at five, which I believe is pretty comprehensive as well.

  29. I thought this was interesting: Perth News Ratings
    Seven News 193,000
    Ten News at Five 129,000
    ABC News 115,000
Ten Late News with Sports Tonight 115,000
    Nine News 84,000

  30. Nine coming third for the fourth day in a row. w00t. Thats good to see.

No real surprises here, I don’t see why you would want to watch Adults 20 to 01, how boring, although it somehow seems to have still pulled a million viewers. Seven seems to have fixed their Thursday problems by shifting Grey’s, thats the first time in quite a while they had a show at 8:30pm that pulled over a million viewers. This year could be Ten’s big comeback although once they run out of a lot of their shows come July, they could be in troubled waters, unless Masterchef turns out to be a runaway hit

  31. RE: Blazza
    Scrubs Seven 637,000
Not a bad figure, Scrubs normally used to get around the 400k mark, but then again it used to be on at 11.30 back then.

  32. And 9 3rd for 4th day! Yet again – their shows are staring 10 minutes later than advertised. The EPG doesn’t update. Unlike 10 – who’d be getting the “most improved” award right now – Life On Mars for example is advertised to start at 9.30, and the EPG even a few days earlier said 9.33. We get to 10 at 9.33 – and whala!!! The show starts on time, gets me in straight away and comes 4th in ratings for the night!!!

Recorded Ramsay for my wife, she doesn’t mind it but even says he has had his day, nearly missed the end despite giving it 10 minute overtime in recording – of course due to 9’s pethetic lateness every night.

I sincerely believe the lack of ratings for 9 at the moment is not only a result of poor content, but a direct result of this constant late running programming every night.

Dino summed it up. “RIP Ch9”.

  33. bring back fergo….cant stand overton with his vertical smile….so have’nt watched him…along with 150 000 others by the look
great to see 10 still spanking 9….SVU and life on mars on top…………..

  34. Ten beats Nine again! Great start to Ten.

Seven’s problem though is that it’s bringing back everything in its stable basically. If TAR starts up soon, that’s about everything Seven’s got that’ll be on air (TGYH, Heroes and PB won’t be on, but everything else that’s worth anything will be). Second half of the year might be a bit different when Seven runs out of all these shows.

  35. knoxoverstreet

Looks like the ratings for Grey’s Anatomy are sinking just as they are in the states. I loathe this show so it’s good to see.

Nice to see a quality show like SVU win the time slot.

  36. 9 will win the first couple of ratings weeks because the cricket will be on in prime time. Most of the nights the cricket is on are 7’s big nights and the nights its not on are 9’s strong nights eg the premier of Underbelly. That will detract from shows like desperate housewives, Greys Anatomy etc where people feel they have to be with the storyline from the begining to continue watching. I think that i s 9’s strategy.

I can’t believe they’ve come out with that Customs show as a blatant rip off of Border Security – I hope it bombs so badly, but to be honest, if its up against How I Met your mother its likely to do reasonably well

  37. 10 must be bribing the ratings box people, such a huge jump from last year :) perhaps it really is all those TBAs shooting 9 in the foot, it will be interesting to see if this continues next week, although it might coz of the head start 10 now have. this will teach 9 that keeping secrets does not pay off, 10 was very upfront with it’s schedule and quite obviously there is nothing to fear from that, it actually helps.

  38. look at sydney news last night:
    Seven – 404,000
    ABC – 283,000
    Nine – 252,000
    Ten – 238,000
thats a 14k difference between 9 and 10 news. thats well less than the daily variation. maybe 9 will go out as sydney’s 4th rate news station. i wonder if they are regretting removing fergo now?

  39. Ha ha to what i said earlier I’d like to say i don’t want Supernatural on 8:30 anymore. That’d mean it was up against Underbelly and I’m sure a lot of people will want to watch that. Maybe I’ll just wait until Dexter finishes. xD

  40. Good to see Lie to Me rating so well. Even if ratings drop off in the second week, I hope Ten keeps it in the same timeslot so that it at has time to build a fanbase.

Really disappointed that no one watched 24 cos its now been bumped to 10.30 Sundays. Lets hope 7 has the good sense to keep it on air and not put on the shelf.

  41. Andrew I think you make a really good point about the lead in for House but also the timing of the episode against 7 and 9. Perhaps 9 could have a clean out of strategy and start again with programmes running on time but also looking for gaps in the numbers to plug and play. Crude analogy but counter-programming seems to be their only option.

  42. Wow House actually did well last night. I’m guessing TEN’s move to pm seems to have worked (or it could have been the lead in from Dance). But things really seem to be looking up for TEN. Hopefully they can keep winning Monday night and hell if they cant get it with Good News Week why not try replacing it with Supernatural? I thing it would go well with Dexter.

  43. I can’t believe that ten may actually have a chance this year. Their first half of the year is pretty solid once again with Dance, Loser, House etc. It just depends on them not stuffing up their second half as badly as last year.

  44. Now we know why ch9 gave us ‘sneak peaks’ of Flashpoint in non ratings, so they could burn of the first season (only 9 eps) and not suffer for to long in the ratings before replacing it. Have they aired the pilot yet? I bet they plan to air it along with the key eps that relate to the pilot in order but the last key ep is 2.04 which is the 13th ep and the original season final before they had a change of plans in the US.

  45. BTW Today Tonight being the highest-rated show on Wednesday? *Projectile vomits* To anyone who watches this or ACA regularly: shame, shame, shame.

  46. TEN has had an awesome week this week! Luck went their way for House as I’d hoped. I agree Andrew, being at 9pm does put it out of competition with Spicks and Specks and the others – I stopped watching House to watch Spicks a few years ago. Good figures for Seven all round, although it looks like numbers are down from last year on CM and AGT. Meanwhile Nine’s week has been a shocker. At least they know that DM belongs on 6:30 Sunday. Plus Life’s retention as always was good, so too Flashpoint. However I can sense 24 being replaced entirely (by The Amazing Race hopefully!)

  47. Im glad House’s figures were up. Great to see TEN beating 9 but doesnt the official ratings period start on Sunday? Dance auditions are pretty boring, I wish theyd just do one show for it all and start live performances!

  48. So the 15 minute overrun is part of nine’s strategy of a ‘feelgood television’ experience? It all makes sense now……Will they ever learn to listen to their viewers? **queue the ‘believe again’ song from their promos**

  49. i think there are several reasons why house did well. firstly, it had a strong leadin. dance as a leadin is alot stronger than bondi bali from last year when house avg 800k. also the fact that it began at 9pm helped it. people watching spicks and specks would turn to ten afterwards as criminal minds and mentalist were already half way through so house didnt directly compete with 7 and 9.

  50. And 9 comes 3rd for the 3rd night in a row.

Last night, Mentalist didn’t start until 8.45 – a rather long Underbelly promo made it even later than the 8.40 finish of Domestic Blitz. Then Flashpoint at about 9.40 – but who needs to watch the first episodes again so soon? Of course it is not going to rate.

With a show starting so late compared to other networks, viewers tune out – especially those of us with EPGs saying 8.30 for something that doesn’t start until 8.45 – it’s wrong. If you are about to watch the Mentailsit, why should you be subjected to 10-15 minutes of the previous show? At least ch 10 tell you the real start time of shows on their EPG (well at least the one on Foxtel does).

  51. House’s number seem to be up a little. I’m so happy Ten’s beating Nine this week. It won’t last though, as SYTYCD won’t be on 4 nights a week forever.

I’m predicting massive ratings drop offs for Wipeout, Flashpoint and 2.5 Men, as viewers begin to realise that there are much better shows on offer (and in Flashpoint’s case, Nine has screwed around with the order of the episodes).

If NIne’s short on programs, put Survivor on.

  52. What happened last night? TT as the no1 show of the night?! I admit, i watched it! But there was nothing special about the stories, just the usual…

And 24, not even in the top 20?! Ch7 must of been planning for this, already moving it out of the slot, but now its just a matter of time before its bumped from its 9.30 sunday slot. The episode was actually quite good.

Domestic blitz, didnt even manage 1mil. Now thats laughable!

  53. ill say it again people
it will be Channel 10 year!!!!!
they may not win the ratings but they will make ppl sit up and take note.
i believe 7 will struggle but will still remain number one…. as long as they dont get cockie!!!
Nine… oh crap!!! ive been a nine person for a long time and iam very unhappy…
channel 9….. u need to listen to your public!!!
michael healy…… your good at what u do, have confidence within yourself and the viewers and u will on top oneday soon. forget about the other networks, have trust with your ppl there and take risks. Work as a team and encourage eachother!!!

oh…. message to andrew…. 2 and a half men is one of the smartest comedies around. its always rated well. it rates very well in the us! and in regards to aus wipeout.. its not that bad. made by aussies… shame on u to bag us aussies!!!

  54. After all the free publicity and hype around Domestic Blitz recently, Nine must be disappointed with it coming 3rd in it’s timeslot. Maybe we’ve finally reached Scott Cam overload.

  55. These results are weird

Looks like House got a lot more popular due to two reruns a week over the summer. It hasn’t seen a number like 1.2 million in at least six months IIRC. The Mentalist again coming third in its slot due to Nine boning it with that woefully moronic timeslot switch, even after all the good stuff they did by rerunning it over the summer. You’d think they’d have the sense to move it back to the slot where it was pulling 1.5 mill, but thats too intelligent for Nine.

24 didn’t do too well, I guess new viewers couldn’t really be bothered trying to get into it after 7 years. AGT wiped the floor with Domestic Blitz, and LOL @ Nine coming a well deserved third place for the 3rd day in a row.

  56. Go TEN!!! its great to see that house is finaly up there were it derserves to be, interesting why its didn’t perfom last year with the same time slot and amount of marketing.
Tonight should be another great night for ten with the debut of life on mars……….and by the way haha Nine!!!

  57. LOL @ Domestic blitz

finally some good numbers for house. 10 are on fire this week. also good numbers for talent and CM. talent is a really good show i watched it for the first time and really enjoyed it. the mentalist, pfft, won’t waste my breath. it’ll probably be worse next week with house at 8:30.

does 9 realise that this is the most important week of the year and they are coming 3rd, and hasn’t won any demos any day yet? all their high hopes seem to be being crossed of one by one as “no threat”.

  58. holy hell that is a massive jump for house, i guess those ads promising 12 new episodes in a row were exactly what people wanted to hear. 9 are getting creamed by ten, you just have to laugh.
