9 Gold

9gold9Here’s an image that’s sure to inspire some debate.

But just what is 9GOLD?

The new name for Channel Nine’s forthcoming entertainment channel?

An Olympics sales pitch to advertisers?

All very mysterious. Make of this what you will…

Let the creative theories begin!

51 Comments to “9 Gold”

  1. Andrew B says:

As we now know (previous posts and wikipedia), 9 Gold was the Indian venture 2000 – 2003. This will not be what the 2nd SD becomes. Will place money on that! The branding will most likely be a variation on what they do now.

“E9″ comes to mind for the channel – E for Entertainment, and can still fill the same space the 9 dots do. And the 6pm news on this channel can be Entertainment Tonight!

  2. James Russell says:

How about classic old episodes from Thomas The Tank Engine, Humphey & Hi-5

  3. Sharpy says:

maybe some golden oldies… back to back marathons of The Golden Girls? On Golden Pond screened twice daily…

  4. Jacob says:

What ever it is, that logo looks really bad

  5. Barrie says:

At least its not as bad as the UK when they rebranded UKTV Gold to Go On Laugh Daily

  6. Abdullah Hussein says:

Whatever it is, i hope they dont replace another HD channel for their new channel like what Channel ten did, What’s the point of having a HD channel if i cant watch my shows in HD, Please Channel nine dont replace 9HD for anything!

  7. what_tha says:

The tyranny of 9, now for made for a richer experience, 9 Gold… we do less, but charge you more

  8. Daniel G says:

Highly unlikely, Paul: a quick WhoIs search turned up that ninegold.com.au is owned by a Richmond, Victoria-based online marketing business called Zebra Vision Pty Ltd.

  9. Baggygreen says:

David, lets ask the Nine advertisers. We now know it all about them so I am sure they have been briefed.

  10. Paul says:

I wonder if it has anything to do with the domain name ninegold.com.au

  11. avoidz says:

    20-to-1-athon channel?

  12. Tony says:

Nine Gold was Nine’s Indian joint-venture network.

  13. Woody says:

One HD and g-OLD…..I’m feeling underwhelmed…
At least this will only be on 9’s second SD channel. I hope.

  14. James Russell says:

As for a Nine’s new network-based channel, it will be nice for it to screen some of the classics like Sale Of The Century, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, All Together Now, McLeods Daughters, Water Rats, Stingers, Bert’s Family Feud, Don Lane’s Show, “classic episodes” of “Hey Hey”, Price is Right, Footy Show (both AFL & NRL versions), IMT, Funniest Home Videos etc and for US content: “classic episodes” of “Home Improvement”, Frasier, The Nanny, Seinfeld, The George Lopez Show, Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, Full House, classics from Warner Bros. etc.

The new channel is will turn into a “111 Hits Channel”-styled FTA Channel, but it will have no commercial breaks (the same does 7HD)

  15. Matt says:

It isn’t nearly as interesting as you think. It’s for charity

  16. astrogirl says:

Perhaps they are expecting a Nine personality to nab the Gold Logie this year.

  17. Glenn Petrie says:

Perhaps Nine will launch their first Pay TV channel?

  18. Shelly says:

i think it makes Channel 9 has gone Old.. not Gold…

  19. Patrick says:

Sounds like a new digital channel.

Seeing as UK Gold is on one of the digital channels in England I’d assume this is the same premise.

I really do hope it has classic shows on it – and by çlassic’I mean shows before 1990.

It’s about time some of the early B & W/60’s/70’s shows got an airing. All they’re doing at the moment is sitting in the archives gathering dust.

I know there is a market out there of people wanting to see these shows so fingers crossed Ch 9 will get their act together and air them!

I also agree that the older shows are much better than the dross passing as éntertainment’ these days. – I mean can anyone imagine Wipeout being regarded as a classic in 20 years time? I don’t think so !!!

  20. Julie says:

Personally I won’t mind if it’s old TV shows from 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. A lot of these shows were wayyyyy better than some of the stuff they are showing now.

Also you have to think that old TV shows must have something going for them if Hollywood continues to remake them as movies e.g. “The A-Team” movie or updated versions like the proposed new series of “Hawaii Five-O” due out in 2010 and they updated version of “Melrose Place” which they are putting together right now.

  21. ct says:

‘Tis where Nine repeats whole 24 hour shcedules of vintage programs, complete with vintage ads/promos , from the glory days of the 70s/80s/90s before the current decline. It will be their way to demonstrate how the thnking at Nine is still in the past, and their dying wish to return to such glory (or inglorious) days. Good luck to them.

  22. Leon says:

Im thinking 9 Gold would be thier new HD Channel…

  23. Zen Man says:

I agree with Peter’s comments. We’ll probably see old episodes of TV shows which are in the archives. Along with All Together Now, we’ll probably see old episodes of Getaway, Wonder World, What’s Cooking with Geoff Janz, Changing Rooms with Suzie Wilks, Money with Paul Clitheroe and oh dear, the list goes on.

I’m inclined to think considering the name Nine Gold that they will fill it will old programming so it doesn’t clash with the ratings they receive on their main channel.

  24. Brad says:

GIven Channel 9’s current strategy, I assume it is high quality porn.

  25. Otam says:

It may be Channel 9’s new channel because they still own it. Would show second-rate, yet “cult” stuff, and they’d buy stuff from 10 (because of ONE). There wouldn’t be a HD version because there is only room for one HD channel and two SD channels. This is also why there is only ONE HD and no Ten HD. All because of freeview guidelines.

  26. wamdue says:

I assume it will be similar to the old UKTV Gold, showing repeats of Classic 9 (& possibly other Aussie shows) all day.

  27. Kuttsywood says:

I mean Evan, should watch my spelling…

  28. Kuttsywood says:

It’s awful familiar Evab, that is the disc logo from last year.

But being a Brisbane boy, I am expecting that this is for the new SD, and it will probably launch August 16, with the final QTQ 50th special airing nationally as the first program on the new channel.

Why? Aren’t 50th anniversaries often referred to as golden anniversaries?

  29. Steve says:

could it be a chocolate channel?

  30. Byron says:

Didnt they use the brand ‘Nine Gold’ when they released a series of DVDs including the best of Paul Hogan?

  31. Peter says:

I predict that this is their secondary digital channel… let’s think what cheap old content do they old the rights to that they could dust off?

All Together Now McLeods Daughters Water Rats Stingers Sons and Daughters “classic episodes” of Hey Hey, Price is Right, Footy Show, IMT, Funniest Home Videos etc

and for US content: Frasier The Nanny Seinfeld The George Lopez Show Full House etc

Let’s see how far off the mark I am.

  32. Amanda says:

the golden oldy starion :p lol

  33. newtaste says:

    I think it should read
    : : : 9
    Gold
    Coast

  34. Earthquake says:

It sounds like the entertainment channel aimed at an older (but larger) segment of the viewing audience – say 30+.

Showing mainly repeats of shows and movies from 70’s – 90’s.

The name seems a bit tacky though – it sounds like the name of a beer (like VB Gold, XXXX Gold, etc).

  35. Steve says:

looks like branding straight out of the 70’s … yuk!

  36. Dave says:

I’ll have a crack. I think it is for the new entertianment channel. Perhaps a sign it is going to be more TV1 than Fox8 in style? Welcome Back Kotter and The Cosby Show 24/7!

  37. Craig says:

    Fools Gold?

  38. JJ says:

    A new brand of beer????

  39. Tony Harrison says:

The new Two and a Half Men network.

  40. mikey says:

LOL that is very effing lame. Nice work, marketing experts :)
It sounds and looks like Nine OLD, and no doubt the content of the ‘entertainment’ channel will be old and drab, just like that 80’s looking logo.

  41. Nick says:

The logo looks like it was made in the 80’s.

  42. ro says:

just drop the g and thats what they are!

  43. AuTivo says:

Rhymes with … old. Nine’s other digital channel – recycled programming.

  44. Zambora says:

Fool’s Gold or a lame excuse to make the station look good.
Must have cost a fortune for the logo etc and promotions – yet Nine neglect the one thing that counts , the viewer.

  45. Mark says:

    Isn’t this Nine’s part-owned Indian Channel?

  46. Goatsbreath says:

    Repeats or “Encores”?

  47. dave matthews says:

9 GOLD – wishful thinking by CVC and PBLmedia that that is what Kerry Packer buried under the Richmond and WIlloughby studios and that can be mined to get the company out of debt.

  48. Evan says:

Just did a search on Wikipedia and found it (it’s referenced under the entry for Metro Gold). It ran for 3 years from 2000 (I was a bit off with the dates)

  49. Evan says:

Didn’t Nine run a few channels in India in the early-mid 90’s? I’m sure 9 Gold was one of the names. The logo looks awfully familiar (and awful as well).

  50. Neon Kitten says:

If this is real, what it likely means in terms of programming makes me shudder in horror.
