AFI Awards proposal to hit ‘short run’ drama

eastwThe Australian Film Institute is proposing changes to its AFI Awards which will have repercussions to ‘short-run’ dramas including East West 101 and East of Everything.

The proposal is part of the AFI’s annual review of its awards in order to reflect changes in the industry.

Last year the AFI made a last minute change to accommodate ‘short run dramas’ such as Bed of Roses, to avoid them competing against long running dramas such as City Homicide, Rush, Underbelly and Satisfaction.

This year the AFI is proposing that dramas (and Telefeature, Mini Series) which entered into this category cannot submit a second series into the same category the following year.

That means East West 101, East of Everything, Bed of Roses and The Circuit which all have new seasons coming could compete side by side with long-form drama. ABC and SBS are big producers of short-run drama.

The AFI deems that return series, regardless of number of episodes produced, should be judged against other Drama Series.

AFI members are yet to provide feedback on the proposal.

The AFI will also add a new category for  Children’s Television Animation.

  1. I don’t particuarly see the problem, quantity doesn’t equal quality so they shouldn’t have much to worry about. I would much rather sit and watch 6 episodes of a fantastic show than to sit and watch 22 episodes of a show like City Homcide which I find extremely bland.
