Airdate: Essence of the Game

Former AFL player and filmmaker Rob Dickson captures behind the scenes footage of the game in a doco on Seven this week.

essgameThis Friday night Seven has a documentary, Essence of the Game, by former AFL player and filmmaker Rob Dickson.

Hosted and narrated by Nathan Buckley, the doco goes behind the scene sof the game with access to dressing rooms, building to Hawthorn and Geelong Grand Final match.

Commissioned by the AFL and Seven it promises never before seen vision of Hawthorn’s celebration with the premiership cup in the middle of the MCG at 8pm on Grand Final night, Jonathan Brown miked up during the Hall of Fame match, unprecedented access to senior coaches through 2008’s finals series and their
strategies.

AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said Dickson’s work had long been known within the football industry. Dickson also made the Access All Areas: Shane Crawford Exposed doco in 2004.

“The 150th year of Australian Football, our only indigenous game, celebrated the link between football in the parks and the communities, and the game at the elite level.

“Rob went to every part of Australia, and every level of the game, in 2008 to record and recognise the pivotal role that Australian football plays in Australian society today.”

It airs Friday at 8.30pm in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and at 11am on Sunday March 22 in Sydney and Brisbane.

  1. Daniel: to put that into perspective, in Sydney and Brisbane you can choose between two AFL programs at 11am this Sunday: The Essence of the Game (Seven) and the 2008 AFL Grand Final replay (7HD). The GF replay will also be shown on Seven in Melbourne and Perth, and on 7HD in Adelaide.

  2. 11am Sunday into Brisbane and Sydney is ridiculous. Channel 7 are showing some Cameron Diaz movie into Brisbane at 8.30 Friday. I love my footy and would rather watch this doco than some movie that flopped at the box office.
