Humphrey gets in all manner of strife

He may lead a very exciting life, but Humphrey B. Bear doesn't need this sort of excitement.

hbbearBanksia Productions, which owns the licence for the Here’s Humphrey series, has been threatened with liquidation after WIN-owned Channel Nine Adelaide pursued the company for an alleged $50,000 debt.

The action, in South Australia’s Supreme Court, is believed to be over allegedly unpaid studio rental fees.

Humphrey creator Rex Heading said the clash over cash was “a bloody shame”.

“He should never be allowed to vanish from the scene because of a stupid fight about $50,000.

“He’s a very valuable, iconic character. You’d do everything in the world to protect him.”

Humphrey filmed his last episodes in 2007, with Nine’s deal allowing it to air repeats until February this year.

While he also appears every year at Nine’s sentimental favourite Carols by Candlelight, Humphrey was also lifting spirits in the phone room during the Australia Unites bushfire appeal last month.

Maybe it’s time we took up an appeal for the funny old fellow himself?

In 2007 when there were suggestions the character could be ‘boned’ by Nine, Banksia’s Stewart Lamb said keeping Humphrey on Australian television was important. “He’s been on Australian TV for 42 years and we don’t want that to end,” he said.

Channel 9 Adelaide general manager Graeme Gilbertson would not discuss the nature of the debt while the matter was before the court.

However Mr Gilbertson said that “a settlement was being negotiated.”

Calls to Banksia’s Adelaide offices by News Limited went unanswered on Wednesday.

  1. I do hope they sort things out and Humphrey has been around like forever.

Without Him Channel Nine becomes known as the home of CSI,2.5 MEN and the Footy Show

  2. Fair dinkum Gerrard, you keep telling us that Channel nine is the home of most of the best australian kids shows. So why are they suing Banksia, why cant they sort it out and come to a deal in the interest of childrens tv.
Maybe Nine are not as noble and great as you think !!

  3. Channel nine is the home of most of the best australian kids shows, and hopefully they will revive this soon. Shame on Nine for not keeping such an iconic character on our screens.

  4. I remember when he got axed a while back. They took him off the air because after 30+ years on TV they realised that he wasn’t wearing any pants and that got him booted off TV.

    Totally ridiculous !!
