When Obama meets Leno

Anything KRudd can do? President Obama will give the first appearance by a sitting President on a late-night TV talk show.

Jay Leno has landed an interview with President Barack Obama this Thursday night (US), the first appearance by a sitting U.S. president on a late-night TV talk show.

NBC said Obama would sit down to talk about his economic plan and “other topics.” In contemporary America, late night shows are obviously now fundamental for communicating to Joe the Plumber. Obama also gave late night appearances during his election campaign and Michelle Obama has appeared as a First Lady on The Ellen de Generes Show.

It will also be Obama’s first sit-down talk show appearance in studio with a live audience since his election last year, and the first ever appearance by a U.S. president while in office on a late-night chat show.

Leno leaves his the late-night slot on NBC in May after 17 years but launches a new, prime-time chat show thereafter.

All being well the episode should air in Australia on The Comedy Channel on Friday night -but look out for highlights on news reports the same night. Booked for the same show have been Teri Hatcher, John Cena and Kelly Clarkson. Let’s see who gets bumped…

  1. Actually, when Michelle Obama was on Ellen, she was not first lady at the time from what I recall.

Anyway, look forward to seeing Obama on Jay. It’s great to see leaders connecting with people that way.

  2. This echoes Kevin Rudd being a guest on Rove last year after years of John Howard refusing to.

Both Obama and (to a slightly clumsier extent) Rudd are media-savvy in terms of the wider population, not just the “elites”. That’s something that, locally, the Opposition might want to think about.

Remember, there was a time before 9/11 when John Howard = vomit 🙂
