Aussie actor becomes Spartacus

A little-known Australian actor named Andy Whitfield has landed the lead role on a new US series alongside Lucy Lawless.

andywA little-known Australian actor by the name of Andy Whitfield has landed the lead role on a new US adventure drama alongside Lucy Lawless.

Whitfield will play the title role in the Sam Raimi-produced series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Lawless will play Lucretia, who along with her husband Batiatus, owns Spartacus.

Spartacus which begins production today in New Zealand is set for a for a January premiere on pay TV network Starz, best known for the TV series Crash.

Whitfield has had guest roles in Packed to the Rafters, McLeod’s Daughters, The Strip, All Saints, and lead role in the film Gabriel.

Others in the cast include Erin Cummings as Spartacus’ wife; Peter Mensah as Batiatus’ most loyal slave; Manu Bennett as a top gladiator; Antonio Te Maioha as Batiatus’ bodyguard; Craig Parker as a Roman Legate; and Nick E. Tarabay as a former gladiator-turned-bookie.

Spartacus will use virtual sets to re-create ancient Rome. Along with Raimi it is co-produced by Xena‘s Rob Tapert plus Joshua Donen.

    Also, Looovvveeed Whitfield in Gabriel. I was recently thinking that it didn’t do as well for him as it should have been, but clearly his talents are being recognised at an international level. Looking forward to seeing it! Any ideas what network will pick it up?? I’ve got my money on Ten. Couldn’t really see Foxtel picking it up, seeing as they don’t even air Xena or Hercules anymore (much to my dismay!)
