Credit where its due

Ex-Desperate Housewives star Nicolette Sheridan reckons she should have been added to the opening titles alongside her co-stars.

dhwNicolette Sheridan, who as we know is leaving Desperate Housewives, has spoken about her exit which goes to air imminently in the US -but we’ll avoid specific spoilers on how Edie Britt departs.

Sheridan does comment, however, on the fact that she was never added to the opening titles of the hit show -even after Edie married and became a “wife.”

“When you have a jewel, why not polish it and put it out there for all to see?” she said.

For his part writer Marc Cherry is pushing a line about her exit due to the end of her story-worth plus a cost saving.

“There has been tremendous pressure put on me to cut costs … the network is saying to all the shows, ‘The company is really hurting financially. You must find a way to produce these shows more cheaply,'” he says.

With Sheridan gone, the show will save an estimated $100-200,000 per episode.

Cherry insists Sheridan’s character was no longer relevant on the show.

“Edie’s already slept with most of the guys on the street and has caused about as many problems as she could,” he says.

Asked about her likely replacement, Cherry says, “We will find a new kind of sexiness coming through Wisteria Lane.”

“What I won’t do is cast another fortysomething sexy blonde,” he adds. “[Sheridan] performed the ageing, neighborhood tramp better than anyone has ever done before.”

Ouch. Who else thinks a bit of bad blood has gone down…..?

  1. The latest rumour is whoever Edie represented in Marc Cherry’s own life was not well liked and he wanted to see the end of her.

Whatever the case it’s becoming evident this wasn’t a clean cut getaway and someone wanted her gone.

  2. Shame she was a great character I preferred her over Susan, although I like the other 3 more….she was great value though and I agree she was regarded a supporting character for too long when she was clearly one of the stars, and shame to see her go.

  3. Edie was great in Season 3 when she got together with Carlos, while looking after her son. We saw a very vulnerable side to her, a refreshing change from the amusing but sometimes two-dimensional tramp character.

  4. I agree with Neon Kitten – the Edie character never did much for me. I must slightly disagree on the humour though – Edie did, on occasion, have some great one liners, but I guess that’s more the script writers than the actress!

  5. To me, the Edie character has never really been especially essential – she’s a two dimensional angry-cougar cliche that Nicolette Sheridan simply doesn’t seem capable of bringing any warmth or humour to.

Cherry’s catty comments are, in reality, spot-on.
