frenchsaunAnd it’s about time too.

Beloved British comediennes Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders will receive a BAFTA Fellowship at the academy’s 2009 television awards next Sunday.

They will be the second double-act to win the prestigious award, following Morecambe and Wise, who were honoured in 1999.

Their 27-year-long television career began as part of the alternative comedy troupe The Comic Strip, which ran in tandem with their ITV series Girls On Top alongside Ruby Wax and Tracey Ullman. As well as their BBC sketch series, the duo are also responsible for Absolutely Fabulous and Vicar of Dibley.

Vicar of Dibley creator Richard Curtis described the pair as the UK’s “best ever double act”.

“The great thing about French and Saunders is that they have never lost that edginess and weirdness. You often watch them and think they are profoundly strange,” he said.

BAFTAs always divides their film and television awards into separate nights. Sadly, there are no current plans to screen these events in Australia. The two will tour Oz for the first and last time from late June.

Yeah sorry my typing was a little off there…”Murder Most Horrid”, not “Nurder most Horrid”. I think that would be a description for mediaspy.org …ha! Just kidding…

Love them both. Comic strip presents is a real cracker. Goes To The Movies is a hoot. Lenny Henry must have the craziest relationship… Nurder Most Horrid was good too. Vicar of Dibly was good but that later Christmas Special/finale was a real cock-up. Ab-Fab is wonderfull and original. They are great. La Qua!
