GO!99 for entertainment?

By David Knox on April 14, 2009 / Filed Under News 64

go99Today TV Tonight asks if “GO!99″ will be the name of the upcoming entertainment channel  that Nine is planning to launch?

As part of its multichannelling, a new entertainment channel will begin in the second part of the year. Based on this leaked logo, Nine’s font is sleek, contemporary and alters from its traditional “9.”

So far there is no word on what titles may comprise the new-look channel but Nine has previously been reported as seeking to utilise content that has been stored in its library due to a ‘lack of air space’ on its primary channel.

Advertisers on its main channel could be offered free ads on the new channel as part of the initial launch.

Sales Director Peter Wiltshire has previously indicated Nine was aiming for an August start-up.

Chris I had to edit your links here, here and here as I think people forget links are not approved in comments.

They look very old though. I hear GO! is one of several registered, but the Channel 99 addition is very significant. We’ll have to see what the outcome is…

Any idea when these logos where used?

    [edit]

  4. timmy April 18, 2009 at 3:08 pm -

Nine is already using that font on promos for “New in 09″

Hey — they’ve been allowed to do that since 2001. It’s the one kind of multichannelling that’s always been fully legal in Australia. But they’ve never done it before, so why start now?

Or maybe an extra ‘O’ in GO

  7. Tony April 15, 2009 at 9:53 pm -

There’s an idea – call it Gyngell!!! – exlamation marks optional.

    GO! Away!

In the UK they have a TV channel called Dave. Now why can’t we have something cool like that?

  10. neil webb April 15, 2009 at 1:30 pm -

The Nine reminds me of channel 9 in Denver + hoping WIN picks this up

  11. John April 15, 2009 at 12:15 pm -

    Pretty amateur.

Still I look forward to watching Seinfeld and The Nanny on it hehe… I’m not kidding.

“Nine has previously been reported as seeking to utilise content that has been stored in its library due to a ‘lack of air space’ on its primary channel.”

This statement really makes me laugh! if they stopped showing repeat after repeat they would have more air time for the content “stored in their library”.

That said I’m looking forward to more “Australias got no talent” & “Who has the biggest gut” type shows.

TV programming in Oz really sucks…

    I hate it.

I love the amateur expert opinions for watermarks on this thread

Apr 14 must have been a slow day

  15. Rob April 15, 2009 at 7:36 am -

    James,

there is no way they will show The Wire – 9 have no interest in this style of series at anything other than 1am mid week

  16. Alan Cramer April 15, 2009 at 7:27 am -

At least the “GO!” will fit with affiliates aswell if they take it. Such as GO! Channel 88 for WIN and NBN (until they switch to Nine).

  17. JM April 14, 2009 at 11:16 pm -

Its been registered so that will be the name.
look it up on the ipaustralia website
    Trade Mark # 1290489

  18. Peter April 14, 2009 at 11:11 pm -

The 9 looks like their old logo that I remember from the 60s!

  19. camo April 14, 2009 at 11:01 pm -

its all good for you metro people bt what about our poor country cousins…when will Prime /Sth X 10/ WIN/NBN say what they are doing….David iam sure the country cousins would love to know…have you asked and have they answered…and I like 99 extra ” could play off “99 extra reasons to watch” WIn 88 sad but it would be confusing…another Government stuff up by not letting the regionals be the same numbers…even though they would argue that they couldnt for the metro/regional border areas…

  20. James April 14, 2009 at 10:24 pm -

They could show The Wire from beginning to end in a reasonable timeslot.

  21. meiji-era April 14, 2009 at 10:19 pm -

    I don’t think This Channel would survive….

The Best reason why we should Switch to Digtal TV is ABC2.

  22. Paull April 14, 2009 at 10:06 pm -

So… 7, when are you getting your 2nd sd channel up and running?

  23. Neon Kitten April 14, 2009 at 9:45 pm -

That logo could make for one hellishly annoying watermark…

  24. Susie April 14, 2009 at 9:45 pm -

I wonder if this is what they are saving those already filmed episodes on Celebrity Singing Bee, 9 said they would be aired later in the year…and its definately an entertaining & fun show.

Some when are you gonna tell us what this logo is from David? This one looks like a credible logo, especially when compared to that ghastly Nine Gold (LOL it’s still funny) logo you posted the other week…

    Can someone confirm – is ABC2 on Ch 22, ABC3 will be on 23, Seven2 on 77, and Nine2 is 99…. What about SBS 2 & 3?

  27. Christian April 14, 2009 at 8:28 pm -

They should use Channel 911, I believe they’ve been allocated that LCN.

Their slogan can be “Yeah, I’ll hold!”

Maybe just my humor, but, if they made a crime drama channel.

  28. Harry April 14, 2009 at 8:14 pm -

Thats a bit cheap and typical.

  29. Captain Awesome April 14, 2009 at 7:27 pm -

‘agent 99′ would be great :) as in ‘get smart and watch 99′.

go!99 is a little bland, but better than 9sd2 or similar

  30. Andrew April 14, 2009 at 7:06 pm -

i’ve no idea if that logo is genuine or not, but i actually like it. It looks fun. Better than just using the standard “9” with some add-on to the logo (like 9HD) But at the end of the day it’s content that will make the channel a hit or not – not the logo.

  31. Michael April 14, 2009 at 7:05 pm -

Oh come on Dans dans tall poppy i think not
plenty suggestions from your comment till now even e99 is far superior than that crap
    go99 is just laughable

  32. Ellis April 14, 2009 at 6:54 pm -

Goooooo 99!!! It sounds like a catchphrase from some Japanese kids’ show. It’s a bit self-congratulatory, don’t you think? “Go 99! We’re the best and are going to win the ratings”

  33. Jake April 14, 2009 at 6:12 pm -

I actually like the logo as it is seperate from 9 and i also like the idea of Nine+ and Nine Extra and even the name Nine News Now if they do a news channel

  34. Kirben April 14, 2009 at 6:06 pm -

Go sounds perfect, as in how quickly will TV shows go off the channel. Since Nine usually doesn’t give TV shows a chance on their main channel, frequently changing the timeslots, or completely dropping shows, or even selling off shows (several recent series sold to Foxtel).

The programming on their HD channel has been the worse of all channels, which only parts of several series (Justice League Unlimited, Taken, Xiaolin Showdown) actually shown. The reason? Nine let the rights expire, rather than completely showing those series earlier or quicker.

  35. Tony April 14, 2009 at 5:13 pm -

They’re obviously aiming for viewers with an IQ of 99 or less! But they’r already watching Deal or No Deal.
Maybe they can use Barbara Feldon as the face of the network.

  36. Edu April 14, 2009 at 5:08 pm -

I like it, quite unique; although as someone has mentioned, I also like E9 (for Entertainment Nine) as well. I just wish the colour wouldn’t be black and white, it’s so retro.

  37. Kuttsywood April 14, 2009 at 4:56 pm -

    Nine Extra sounds good, cpandilo.

The cornerstone would be Brisbane Extra, on at 5:30 nationally, on the new SD.

You could promote it as “Extra”, coming soon to 9. then reveal that the “Extra” is the new SD.

  38. Gerrard April 14, 2009 at 4:55 pm -

It’s a bit of a lame title. The logo seems similar to Cartoon Network as well.

I’m not sure if they shoudl incorporate the nine dots or not. I mean, Nine use the dots everywhere these days (there’s like a billion of them in their promos for ‘Choose Nine’), but then if it is a new channel, maybe they should not incorporate it.

E99 sounds really good as well. They need to have 99 in it to tell people what channel it’s available on. Otherwise it’ll be like the US where no numbers are in the name of the networks.

  39. Matt April 14, 2009 at 4:53 pm -

I think they could go just channel 99

  40. tomothy April 14, 2009 at 4:40 pm -

Go? They are already telling us not to watch them, just like the main channel currently does with its programming….

  41. jim April 14, 2009 at 4:35 pm -

nine have more than enough content to fill this new channel. To name a few shows they could show new eps/series of:
Little Britain US, Survivor, ER, Supernanny, Kitchen Nightmares, The F Word, Primeval, Flashpoint, Men in Trees, Weeds, Gossip Girl, Balls of Steel, Big Bang Theory, Old Christine, til death, Power of Ten, Superstars of Dance, Crusoe

  42. mikey April 14, 2009 at 4:30 pm -

Yeh I agree, Channel 99 or just 99 would work pretty well…

  43. Andrew B April 14, 2009 at 4:30 pm -

Separate branding would be a good idea, but I am sure they would still want an outlet for dumped ch 9 shows and re-runs as well as encores and time shifts. This is not official yet though, is it. I always though E9, 9 plus or 9 extra would have been good names here (some other posts mentioned as well). Can’t wait to see the programming.

  44. Paull April 14, 2009 at 4:18 pm -

not a fan of the GO! part of the name, but ‘Something’ Channel 99 wouldn’t be too bad, and the font isn’t that bad either.
I think Channel 99 on its own would work.

  45. Ted April 14, 2009 at 4:14 pm -

Is this becoming an outlet for the Channel 9 Publicity Department?

  46. Shane April 14, 2009 at 4:04 pm -

@cpandilo, i hope they dont simulcast anything live from channel 9. its ment to be a new channel not just the same thing on 9.

i carn’t see this channel having decent programing from 2am or so, unless u call home shopping programing or it will be like ABC2 at night and show guide information which wouldn’t be that bad, well its better then home shopping, hang-on i don’t know about that.

but i do hope they show some time-sifted programing from channel 9 and new programing/programing that didn’t work on 9 to be seen in full on this channel.

At the end of the day it makes no/very little different what the logo looks like and it only matters whats on the channel.

Yeah i can see alot of old shows on in the daytime, and i hope some of this will also be on 9HD even if its on at a later time or even 2 days later at 11:30pm if i was on GO99 at 9:30pm

  47. mikey April 14, 2009 at 3:52 pm -

Lose the ! and yeh it’s not a bad effort. And let’s face it, Nine has an excellent back catalogue of awesome shows it never had the balls to air.

  48. marc April 14, 2009 at 3:47 pm -

oh my freakin lord. All theyve done is take the GQ font and made it shit with an exclamation point. google it if u dont believe me. ch 9 continue to prove how few original ideas they posess

  49. Tepee April 14, 2009 at 3:39 pm -

“GO!99″… Probably a little too cheesy, although I like the font. But why don’t they use the traditional Nine logo and incorporate it into this new channel’s logo? There are no running motifs that connect Channel Nine to this supposed GO!99.

  50. Knowfirst April 14, 2009 at 3:31 pm -

    Or Go! 88 for WIN/NBN :P

  51. cpandilo April 14, 2009 at 3:21 pm -

I would have called it Nine Extra. With it airing a mixture of new series during primetime (series which either didn’t rate, e.g. Gossip Girl, Survivor; or series which didn’t last, e.g. The Evidence, Hidden Palms), with some encores of series shown on Channel Nine.

During daytime there would be classic series, e.g. I Dream Of Jeannie, Cheers, kid’s programs and repeats of series including Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Survivor and also some repeats of Australian television series. The channel would probably become a simulcast of Channel Nine from midnight till 9am.

Another positive would be that the channel would show sport which runs overtime (e.g. cricket) leaving Channel Nine to air what has been scheduled on time from Nine News onwards. Nine News & A Current Affair would be timeshifted by 30 minutes, starting from 6.30 weeknights.
Unlike what others have commented, Nine Extra would be supplementary to Channel Nine – not stand alone.

However based on the above logo, I think the ident of channel 99 (if that is the real one) will probably not be that good.

  52. marc April 14, 2009 at 3:20 pm -

oh my god. all theyve done is take the GQ font and made it ugly by adding an exclamation mark. congrats, ch9 once again u’ve shown how utterly devoid of creativity you are.

  53. Liam K April 14, 2009 at 3:19 pm -

I like it. It needs to be separate and unique from the main channel.

  54. Ryan April 14, 2009 at 3:13 pm -

I’m looking forward to it, I just hope shows like Weeds and Curb Your Ethusiasm get aired in decent slots. Also hope WIN pick it up immediately unlike SC Ten with ONE…although I’ve started seeing promos on SC Ten for One.

  55. KIA86 April 14, 2009 at 3:02 pm -

I think it’s a bit tacky, probably something like E9 is better (like channel 4 in the UK), would work as it rolls of the tongue a bit better.

  56. Luke April 14, 2009 at 2:53 pm -

I like it. What font is that?

    At least it’s not 92 or 9SD2.

  57. J Bar April 14, 2009 at 2:52 pm -

    It’s time to go…Channel 9.
Reminds me of the Big Brother evictions. :P

  58. Jezza of the city April 14, 2009 at 2:51 pm -

I think ch9 could improve on this name and logo by calling their ents channel ‘Toss Pot TV’ their programmers would feel right at home and could practise totally stuffing things up, not that they need much more help!!!!!!!!!

  59. DansDans April 14, 2009 at 2:34 pm -

Come on Michael, you hero, you come up with something better – tall poppy syndrome alive and well here.

  60. mac April 14, 2009 at 2:33 pm -

the logo looks good, good to see also that it is completely different than the 9 logo as to say i will be a completely different channel, also remember seven said on feb 25 that they would announce details on their second channel within a month!!

  61. michael April 14, 2009 at 2:26 pm -

go99 oh come on thats pathetic

  62. Todd April 14, 2009 at 2:19 pm -

    not a bad logo there.

  63. Shane April 14, 2009 at 2:18 pm -

yeah i guess it ok, i think its good it not called something like 9SD2 or have anything to do with the 9 logo, it needs to separate itself from the main channel which is what it is doing. could we see a GO77 from seven that way the could share ads and content with each other.

overall i think its a good idea.
i wish someone at seven could leak something.

  64. wunderbeast April 14, 2009 at 2:15 pm -

oh please no. remove the ” ! ”
unless its an extreme sports channel, exclamation marks never work well. granny will topple over if pushed into forced excitement over days of our lives repeats.
