Loser turns winner

What's this? The Biggest Loser has won the last three nights, defeating Home and Away and Two & a Half Men.

ajr21TEN’s Biggest Loser series isn’t slimming down, it’s actually gathering momentum.

This week it has won the last three nights, defeating Home and Away and Two and a Half Men.

It managed a high of 1.4m on Sunday, admittedly off the back of the Grand Prix. But even the preceding week it won the Sunday slot with 1.27m.

Concerningly for Seven, TEN’s series is also winning the 16-39 demos. The show is proving particularly popular in Sydney.

The fourth season of the series had a difficult start, with host A.J. Rochester in the news for personal reasons. That led to her being all but invisible in the early promos, shifting focus to trainers Shannon Ponton and Michelle Bridges.

But viewers have responded to the “couples” edition, produced by FremantleMedia and set in a new location.

It bodes well as the network prepares for Masterchef Australia produced by the same company. If dieting can be this popular -can cooking?

  1. We watch this at home just about every night. But the impression we have is that they’ve been making it up as they go along.

Every time someone, who appears to be one who could eventually go on to win it, is eliminated, they come up with another “you won’t believe what you will be up against next” sort of thing….and then they bring eliminated contestants back to try again. Some of the contestants are terrific! But I have to admit, I’m tired of the tears, especially when they come from Cameron, who still doesn’t get it.

  2. @Posteroftruth – you’ve proven you don’t watch the show at all because it is about bettering the contestant’s lives as well as being a gameshow. The trainers know it isn’t just about excerising but finding out the emotional reason behind why these people got so overweight in the first place.

re AJ – I pray to the network gods that she will be forcibly removed as host next year. I cannot honestly see any improvement in her hosting abilities within the last 4 years and she seems to have adopted a really smug attitude towards everyone.

  3. Contrived drama winning over silly drama and a tired & stale comedy, no real news here.

Though I am continually amazed by what rates.

    Cheers,

    Teddy Bär

  4. I guess the tactic of combining The Amazing race, Big Brother, Extreme Makeover and samples of numerous other reality shows won it for them this year.

I would probably watch this show if it was genuinely about people trying to better their lives instead of the producers turning it into a Gameshow with nothing but ratings in mind.

  5. Re: May/Rove: The catchphrase has definately moved to “[this] is going to change the way the game works” or “there’s a big possibility I could be going home” this year – I remember last year it was “we didn’t know what to expect” and there was a rant article about it in TV Week. heh.

  6. Biggest Loser’s ratings increase as the series goes on every season – this year is no different. Same as for many reality/competition shows – as it starts to get interesting, more people tune in to see who’s going to win, culminating in the best ratings on the final episode. For example, see Farmer Wants a Wife’s results this week.

  7. Why do you persist in referring to Ten as “TEN”? You don’t refer to Seven or Nine SEVEN or NINE. ABC and SBS are acronyms so that is all well and good, but while TEN might once have stood for “The Entertainment Network” in their promos that is long gone. Ten might even use the capitalisation itself to bignote itself, but I really don’t understand why you do. How about some consistency?

  8. Are not the ratings for One HD / One being counted as Ten. Means that maybe the figures for Loser are being boosted by viewers actually watching Sports Tonight on One HD / One

  9. its sadly addictive this show.. always makes me cry.. for those who thinks it is rubbish.. at least it’s real emotions… real people.. real problems!
not just bad acting *cough* home and away*..

But.. I agree with what was said on rove.. if they say.. this walk is going to change the way the game works again.. I too am going to strangle them with their excess skin..

  10. It’s called recycling.
You lose weight on TBL, You gain it back on Masterchef, then you go back on TBL and lose weight, then go back on Masterchef and pile on the pounds.

Good food and obesity are closely corellated.

In other words, Ten doesn’t need a audition process for the 2010 season of Loser, they can just pick from the viewers who watch Masterchef and cook the recipes afterward.

  11. I totally agree with Ryan, I’m always so worried that I might miss something so I never change channels.

I haven’t changed that often, then the other night I changed over to One HD and missed Sammy’s new look. I was quite disappointed and won’t be changing again during TBL any time soon.

  12. I think Ten would have been better off with a 30 minute version of Ready Steady Cook. I know they’ve tried it once before with *cough* “celebrities”, but giving the regular series a shot in primetime would have been a smarter move, methinks.

  13. i totally love this show above anything else!!! im literally glued every night watching bl i dont even change the channel during the ad breaks just incase i miss something lol.
