Seven renews Sunday Night

Despite a drop in figures, Seven renews Sunday Night for another 10 weeks.

sundaynight22The Australian reports that Seven CEO David Leckie today approved another 10 weeks of Sunday Night, the network’s new current affairs show co-produced by Mark Llewelyn and Adam Boland.

This is despite a drop in figures for the show and a lukewarm reception on the programme’s content.

Seven executives reportedly believe the program is hurting Nine’s 60 Minutes which has dropped to 1.23 million this year, compared to last year’s yearly average of 1.52 million.

For the last two weeks Sunday Night has been beaten by The Biggest Loser, though it was aided by the Grand Prix lead-in this week.

Sunday Night is averaging 1.2 million and Domestic Blitz is sitting on one million, or 200,000 people less. Blitz is now in a production break with one more episode understood to be ‘in the can.’

  1. Please could you help me find the tour dates of the French Canadian Circus Jamie Durie telecast in May please. I am not having much luck on google to get Australian tour dates. Thank you

  2. i think this program is absolutely s**t if this person killed daniel then it will go to his grave with him you are just pulling at strings at the parents hearts all this information should have gone straight to the police and not blasted all over the media you will never know this killer thanks to this programs bid to get rateings not close this case rot in hell i wont watch this show again you have lost another watcher it is sad you would stoop this low

  3. I was watching the show last night and a discussion about circumcision came on.

I was extremely disappointed that they had a women on crying saying “how do you say sorry to your son once you have had it done”

Well to that i say how about you speak to a man about the issue since she would have no idea. She works with an organisation against circumcision… i think she should get a life.

Speak to the men who need to have the operation later on in their life… ask them what they would do!!!

  4. I tuned in to watch in your words a balanced view on vaccination. I was very dissapointed to see a one sided and very borish Mike Munroe shove his view down our throats. I think people have a right to decide if they vaccinate or not.

If vaccines work why are people afraid of those that don’t, 95.7 news radio reported all the cases of whooping cough in northen NSW had been vaccinated.

  5. I know that UFO have visited this country.
Aborigines have it documented on the cave walls, starting with Dinasorusof every generation, flying saucers, space ships, our airoplanes from the first through to recent years, and lok how many American sightings there have been, if nothing else our Aboriginal friends ar to be believed in their documentations.

  6. It isn’t working out. Pop eats itself. Too much news programs on one channel for a snobbish network. Seven Network sounds too Yankish, believe me. The formating is so familiar like Sunrise’s to Good Morning America.

They look overly serious. When the media too can take a share fair of responsibilities the way they say and do. Their speechs are stereotypyical.

  7. this show isnt even fair dinkum. its just a rubbish show and backyard will shat all over it again and again. its nothing 60 minutes and its not even hard hitting. why even bother

  8. I for one am very glad Seven has backed this show. Despite what some believe, I’m with Glenn Dyer and Crikey on this (first time for everything). He correctly observed last week that SN’s stories last Sunday were far superior to anything on 60 Minutes. SN was struggling to find an identity in its first few weeks, but they’re on track now. And it looks nothing like TT. Anyone who thinks so hasn’t watched the stories of recent weeks. Good luck to them – we need more shows like this. Let’s hope viewers respond.

  9. The next 10 episodes of Sunday Night fall within the middle of the AFL season so Seven is clearly relying the footy to provide a solid lead-in. During last season, Seven News often pulled 1.6-1.7 million viewers across five capital cities on Sundays, while Gladiators (which aired from April to June) attracted an average of 1.347 million viewers, so if SN does not get at least 1.3 million viewers nationally Seven won’t be happy.
The SN audience figure could also fluctuate wildly in the coming months due to AFL scheduling in Adelaide and Perth. According to the current broadcast deal between Channels Seven and Ten and the league, during the season eight Sunday afternoon games played in Perth and Adelaide (four in each city) can only be shown on Seven on an extended delay (the so-called “window” games). These means Seven’s coverage of these games cannot begin until 4.30pm in Adelaide or 5.30pm in Perth. From April 19 (episode 11 of SN) to June 21 (episode 20), there are two such “window” games in Adelaide (Crows v Bulldogs on May 10, Power v Tigers on May 17) and fortunately none in Perth. In addition, there are two Crows games and one Power game which start at 4.30pm in Adelaide or Melbourne. These matches have distorted Seven’s Sunday night schedule in Adelaide and Perth over the past two years and will do it again for the rest of the broadcast deal, which expires at the end of 2011.

  10. Other than the fact that this is a crap program, and I’m sorry arguably far worse than 60 Minutes, I don’t believe Sunday Night has had an impact on 60 Minutes at all… I believe the reason for 60 Minutes’ smaller ratings this year is purely driven by that ‘lowest common denominator’ viewing in Border Security… No – one has mentioned that so far… Border Security’s never been put head to head with 60 Minutes before…

  11. Kenny, as you can see Seven executives are giving it a go by allowing the production of another ten shows. But its lowly ratings are a concern considering how much money has gone into it as well as the lead-in of Seven News & the lead out of Border Security which are much higher than Sunday Night’s figures. Seven should be expecting to get atleast 1.2 million viewers.

‘Jump ship’ because viewers are getting their weekly 60min dose of current affairs an hour earlier & then not bothering to watch 60 Minutes after it on Nine. Though as you should be able to see, it has had some impact on 60 Minutes figures so far but some are just watching both shows as a double rather than choosing one or the other as would happen if these were both on at the same time.

  12. SN will probably do better once TBL finishes and masterflop Australia starts domestic blitz on a production break almost defiantly means its been axed seven said the same about the weakest link a few years ago and that hasn’t seen the light of day since

  13. That’s the problem, there is rubbish on this show when it would be expected for one hour a week that no rubbish would be on, it would be all left for TT

Having two weel known presenters makes it look worse when fluff is passed off for current affiars. Sunday is watch this show should be like since it’s in the right timeslot to start with

  14. It’s all a matter of the stories they show. It’s been all over the place recently, if they advertise a story we are interested in, we’ll watch it, same with 60 minutes. I think the end of daylight saving will make a fairer battle ground for 6.30pm Sunday.

  15. OMG David (Leckie) and Peter (Meakin), give it a go! They’ve not found their feet yet. Even so, it’s at least #2 in its spot. They’ve had some great stories (and, yes, some rubbish too) but it’s still a good show, even if the set look like “Sunrise” or TT”. But what’s wrong with that anyway. And the replacement would be…??…some “makeover” or “reality” show, some American crap like “Amazing Race” or more Air Crash Investigations? It’s averaging 1.2m compared to “60 M” 1.23m, which is an hour later with many more sets-in-use!!!
