Simpsons in glorious SD widescreen

By David Knox on April 20, 2009 / Filed Under Programming 43

simpsTEN reckons The Simpsons will air for the first time in widescreen from 8pm Wednesday April 29th.

It begins with the revamp of the opening credits which has been widely seen on YouTube for some time.

Unfortunately what TEN fails to mention is that the long-running series also appears for the first time in  high-definition.

Without TEN HD, the network has nowhere to show the HD, unless it opts to put it on its 24 hour sports channel, ONE.

Doh.

forget hdtv in australia. ive been waiting since2001when i bought my first 1080i panasonic crt tv and besides the original demo loop on 10 and the occasional movie ive been sorely dissapointed. i am continually stunned and amazed at the quality and range of hd available elsewhere. my advice to you all, get a home theatre pc and a fast broadband connection and never look back.

“HD-TV is worth every cent” reads the chalkboard joke in TEN’s widescreen premier of The Simpsons this evening. The show is on the SD channel…

I don’t wanna diss the HD crowd, you have every right to be pissed off when you plunk down thousands on expensive gear only to greeted with sport, but as someone who gets their TV from Foxtel (that’s no channel 7 here in melb) The aspect ratio is the more important of The Simpsons upgrades to me.

  4. Chris April 21, 2009 at 5:42 pm -

It’s not rocket science. One digital channel = sports. The other = Ten HD.

  5. Andrew B April 21, 2009 at 9:20 am -

Currently there can only be one HD channel per network due to bandwidth and licensing. Until analogue is gone it is impossible to have 2 HD channels.

And yes, if you can’t tell the difference between HD and SD you probably have a bad TV or its too small.

What would have made the most sense would have been to keep Ten SD (10) as is, then add the new sports channel as One SD (12) and then have made One HD as a showcase of the best programming from both channels. Down the line, when regulation allowed it, they could have had two HD channels, each a mirror of the existing SD ones.

Of course, thinking logically gets you nowhere these days….

If i get into this topic it will frustrate me be so much. I mean i bought a HD tv to watch my favourites in HD, But unfortunetly, Channel ten decided to step back on technology not go foward.

  8. doug April 20, 2009 at 11:55 pm -

Simpsons in SD & Paintball in psuedo HD . Strange decisions at TEN.

  9. Marc April 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm -

    Hhhmmm……I’ll be in my room…..

  10. Lisa April 20, 2009 at 10:35 pm -

umm get a new HD channel
like channel 13 theres nothing on there….

  11. Evil April 20, 2009 at 8:26 pm -

Anyone claiming you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference or that it wouldn’t benefit from being in HD obviously hasn’t seen it in HD.

It does make a very noticeable difference to the clarity and sharpness of the lines and backgrounds. Animation also tends to progress well, so there are less compression artifacts (macroblocking, sparklies etc.) than most of the HD you’ll see on Australian TV.

Clearly there’s going to be heaps of backlash about yet another example of a show on TEN unavailable in HD on a website dedicated to television rather than sport. But never mind that TEN is the only one of the commercial networks to have a dedicated channel at all.

  13. John April 20, 2009 at 8:00 pm -

itsross, there is a difference. Try getting The Simpsons movie on Blu-ray and comparing it to even just regular DVD.

  14. fizzin April 20, 2009 at 7:31 pm -

I dont care what TEN does, I’ve seen the eps concerned.

  15. Craig April 20, 2009 at 6:57 pm -

What I don’t get is why can’t they have a 2nd HD channel, is it government restrictions? Why can’t each SD channel have a HD simulcast option for the views? Then in an instant FreeView could have up to 20 channels and not 15!

  16. Andrew April 20, 2009 at 6:56 pm -

channel 10 is only allowed one hd channel, so it would be impossible to please all viewers. also channel one on hd is important as it can get alot more viewers to switch to digital than regular 10hd.

ONE HD – what a joke – did anyone see the bull riding last week? I had to watch for sheer shock – and to see if anyone was gored to death – bullfights from Spain on ONE HD soon?

Give me the Simpsons in HD over this tripe any day of the week.

We now return you to our regular programming in glorious SD.

  18. Jake April 20, 2009 at 6:41 pm -

    This is pretty lame,
It’s 2009 and the high definition coverage in australia is as worse as ever.
There’s no point buying a HD TV here in oz, we show hardly anything in HD……except sports.

It’s about time they learned to juggle both sports and normal shows in HD

  19. Michael April 20, 2009 at 6:21 pm -

I still can’t understand why the hell ten need a dedicated sports channel (SD or HD) and why if they have it is sport still shown on ten? You have a sports channel put the damn sport on it!!!

  20. Paull April 20, 2009 at 5:49 pm -

@Dansdans: how else is he meant to put it? I mean the fact is that this simpsons ep is the first one in HD yet it won’t be shown like that on Ten.

Again, it is one of the downsides of having no Ten programming on One HD. I guess it would have been wiser for Ten to make One HD a mix of One SD and Ten.

  21. cjschrissouth April 20, 2009 at 5:32 pm -

they shouldve kept ten hd and made one sd/

  22. cjschrissouth April 20, 2009 at 5:30 pm -

well southern cross ten still hasnt got One HD and never got Ten HD so, either way, id be watching sd

  23. Dan April 20, 2009 at 5:27 pm -

I don’t see waht the big deal is about One HD replacing Ten HD. It’s done , Ten HD is gone… and also wtf with Simpsons going widescreen.. sorry it’s not a show that deserves to go widescreen or high definition.

  24. Sillygostly April 20, 2009 at 5:04 pm -

We won’t hear the end of it until TEN get the back of their heads slapped and give us what we want instead of catering to the miniscule 50,000 (tops) who watch ONE HD.

The picture quality of Ten SD is absolutely pathetic. It often looks worse than DVD… and that’s saying something.

  25. Andrew B April 20, 2009 at 4:54 pm -

Maybe 10 could do a deal with 7 or 9 to show some HD content on their mostly unused HD channels (I mean unused as they simulcast the main channel most of the time).

  26. apaz April 20, 2009 at 4:52 pm -

get over it still same show

  27. itsross April 20, 2009 at 4:29 pm -

I do wonder if anyone would be able to tell the difference between The Simpsons in SD and The Simpsons in HD. Not the best show to showcase HD.

  28. Camo April 20, 2009 at 4:01 pm -

its a cartoon…besides the 5.1 surrond there is no real benefit to seeing it in HD…..

  29. Evil April 20, 2009 at 3:43 pm -

It is utterly ridiculous that select Youtube videos are higher quality than what we’re given on Channel 10.

  30. DansDans April 20, 2009 at 3:23 pm -

Are you just trying to get the anti-ONE HD flamers started, David, by posting a topic like this? Havent we heard enough anti-ONE HD rubbish over the last few months?

  31. Neon Kitten April 20, 2009 at 3:07 pm -

It looks fantastic in HD, as those who watched the HD “internet broadcasts” know all too well.

No white dots blaring out of the bottom of the screen on the HD “broadcast”, either.

But hey, the Indian Pointless League in upscaled SD is way more important, right…?

  32. Lewis April 20, 2009 at 2:59 pm -

Yeah I just thought of that after seeing it advertised. I guess Ten needs a second HD channel, one to broadcast Ten in HD, and One.

  33. Rick April 20, 2009 at 2:24 pm -

    Ridiculous move on TEN’s part.

  34. itsross April 20, 2009 at 2:10 pm -

I saw the commercial pimping the widescreen and wondered why they weren’t pimping the HD, forgetting that they don’t do HD anymore, seriously what a joke! It’s 2009!

  35. Kuttsywood April 20, 2009 at 1:57 pm -

I guess this is a case of retirony for Ten.

Just a month before The Simpsons go HD, Ten dumps the HD channel!

  36. Daniel April 20, 2009 at 1:48 pm -

    Nelson Muntz put it best;

    Ha-Ha!

  37. No_Netfilter April 20, 2009 at 1:37 pm -

I’m sure a substantial number of the sports programs on ONE are not from a HD source, which begs the question: Why didn’t TEN keep its options open and make its 2nd SD channel the 24 hour sports-only option and leave its HD channel as a mix of HD programming cherry-picked from the two SD bands?

That would have kept both sports and non-sports viewers happy, instead of completely alienating all viewers who are not interested in sport.

TEN holds a very warped view of the world where the only subject matter that justifies high picture quality and surround sound is sport.

  38. Matt F April 20, 2009 at 1:21 pm -

To quote Nelson : “HA HA!!”
    To quote Mrs Krabappel: “HAAAA!”
    … and so forth..

  39. mac April 20, 2009 at 12:53 pm -

was wondering if ten would advertise this as being in hd even though it wont be, when 7hd first launched they were still advertising some shows as being in hd even though they where only shown on the sd channel because alternative programming was being shown on the hd channel. i saw the simpsons ad yesterday and like you said it was just advertised as being ws and with the new opening .

  40. Brown April 20, 2009 at 12:40 pm -

After Ten spent so much money on their TEN HD channel, why did they opt to replace it with ONE HD? I do like ONE HD, and i think it could become a great sports channel but why wasn’t it given its own space instead of just rebranding an already established one. Here’s hoping TEN bring back TEN HD in one form or another (how else am i going to watch Battlestar Galactica Re-runs in HD)

  41. Andrew April 20, 2009 at 12:36 pm -

The only real downfall about One HD. I still stand by my original thought that Ten should have opted for a HD channel that took HD content as priority from the main channel over sports HD content.

  42. Leon April 20, 2009 at 12:18 pm -

This was coming up, we all knew it.. Ch10 is gonna have to EAT thier words when the Chalkboard Sequence of this episode comes up ‘HD is really worth It’

Ch10 are pathetic, They’ll prolly change it to either..

    -’SD is really worth It’
-’How are we supposed to air a HD show on an SD channnel’
    -’Freeview is really worth It’
    -’Freeview aint a Trainwreck’

  43. Craig April 20, 2009 at 11:59 am -

Yep no more HD of any ch10 shows, unless it’s sports on ONE HD :(
