Simpsons in glorious SD widescreen

simpsTEN reckons The Simpsons will air for the first time in widescreen from 8pm Wednesday April 29th.

It begins with the revamp of the opening credits which has been widely seen on YouTube for some time.

Unfortunately what TEN fails to mention is that the long-running series also appears for the first time in  high-definition.

Without TEN HD, the network has nowhere to show the HD, unless it opts to put it on its 24 hour sports channel, ONE.

Doh.

  1. forget hdtv in australia. ive been waiting since2001when i bought my first 1080i panasonic crt tv and besides the original demo loop on 10 and the occasional movie ive been sorely dissapointed. i am continually stunned and amazed at the quality and range of hd available elsewhere. my advice to you all, get a home theatre pc and a fast broadband connection and never look back.

  2. “HD-TV is worth every cent” reads the chalkboard joke in TEN’s widescreen premier of The Simpsons this evening. The show is on the SD channel…

  3. I don’t wanna diss the HD crowd, you have every right to be pissed off when you plunk down thousands on expensive gear only to greeted with sport, but as someone who gets their TV from Foxtel (that’s no channel 7 here in melb) The aspect ratio is the more important of The Simpsons upgrades to me.

  4. Currently there can only be one HD channel per network due to bandwidth and licensing. Until analogue is gone it is impossible to have 2 HD channels.

And yes, if you can’t tell the difference between HD and SD you probably have a bad TV or its too small.

  5. What would have made the most sense would have been to keep Ten SD (10) as is, then add the new sports channel as One SD (12) and then have made One HD as a showcase of the best programming from both channels. Down the line, when regulation allowed it, they could have had two HD channels, each a mirror of the existing SD ones.

Of course, thinking logically gets you nowhere these days….

  6. If i get into this topic it will frustrate me be so much. I mean i bought a HD tv to watch my favourites in HD, But unfortunetly, Channel ten decided to step back on technology not go foward.

  7. Anyone claiming you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference or that it wouldn’t benefit from being in HD obviously hasn’t seen it in HD.

It does make a very noticeable difference to the clarity and sharpness of the lines and backgrounds. Animation also tends to progress well, so there are less compression artifacts (macroblocking, sparklies etc.) than most of the HD you’ll see on Australian TV.

  8. Clearly there’s going to be heaps of backlash about yet another example of a show on TEN unavailable in HD on a website dedicated to television rather than sport. But never mind that TEN is the only one of the commercial networks to have a dedicated channel at all.

  9. What I don’t get is why can’t they have a 2nd HD channel, is it government restrictions? Why can’t each SD channel have a HD simulcast option for the views? Then in an instant FreeView could have up to 20 channels and not 15!

  10. channel 10 is only allowed one hd channel, so it would be impossible to please all viewers. also channel one on hd is important as it can get alot more viewers to switch to digital than regular 10hd.

  11. ONE HD – what a joke – did anyone see the bull riding last week? I had to watch for sheer shock – and to see if anyone was gored to death – bullfights from Spain on ONE HD soon?

Give me the Simpsons in HD over this tripe any day of the week.

We now return you to our regular programming in glorious SD.

  12. This is pretty lame,
It’s 2009 and the high definition coverage in australia is as worse as ever.
There’s no point buying a HD TV here in oz, we show hardly anything in HD……except sports.

It’s about time they learned to juggle both sports and normal shows in HD
