Top cast for My Place, ABC children’s drama

Susie Porter, Dan Wyllie, Sacha Horley, Dan Spielman and Leon Ford head a new children's drama for the ABC.

sporterThe ABC has assembled an impressive cast for My Place, its new 13-part, half hour children’s drama series, which started shooting yesterday in Sydney.

Joining a line up of child actors  is a cast that includes: Susie Porter (East of Everything and Little Fish), Dan Wyllie (Love My Way, Underbelly), Sacha Horler (Love My Way, Grass Roots), Dan Spielman (Mary Bryant, Tom White), Russell Dykstra (Clubland, Romulus, My Father), Leon Ford (All Saints, Changi) and Hayley McElhinney (Blue Heelers, Young Lions.)

Based on the award-winning book by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins, it tells the story of one house in South Sydney as told by the children who have lived there for over 130 years. Significantly, the series is produced by award-winning Australian filmmaker, Penny Chapman (Blue Murder, The Track and Brides of Christ.)

Directors for the series will include Jessica Hobbs (Curtin, Love My Way), Samantha Lang (L’idole, The Monkey’s Mask), Catriona McKenzie (RAN: Remote Area Nurse, The Circuit), Shirley Barrett (Love My Way, Walk the Talk) and Shawn Seet (Underbelly, Two Fists One Heart.)

ABC says the series aims to show that everyone is part of history, and that every place has a story. It will be accompanied by an interactive and informative website that allows users to walk through the recreation of the My Place house and watch it change from one generation of children to the next.

Penny Chapman said, “I first read Nadia and Donna’s wonderful book with my seven-year-old daughter in 1993 and ever since then have dreamed of making it as a television series and interactive program. What I love about this project is the way it can connect kids, their parents and their grandparents in exploring what lies behind our families and the places we live in.”

Recently at the ASTRAs, Susie Porter said, “I’ve never done a period piece. I’m really looking forward to getting the lace and the wig and corsets. It shows every decade in Sydney from 1888. It’s a beautiful piece.”

  1. This sounds like a fantastic premise and i cant wait to see how it pans out. About time children’s programming got some decent stuff thrown its way. I hope this is a sign of things to come.
