82Julie Walters stars as Mary Whitehouse, the famous 1960s conservative crusader in the UK, who demanded more respectable television.

Whitehouse, a 53-year-old housewife and art teacher, was outraged by sex, lies, smut and swearing  infiltrating the BBC.

She campaigns against the BBC and its Director-General, Sir Hugh Carleton Greene (Hugh Bonneville).

This true life telemovie screened, ironically, on BBC2, a channel which ignited her fury.

Won’t somebody think of the children?

It airs at 8:30pm Sunday May 31st on ABC1.

  1. Hey you, Whitehouse, ha ha charade you are.
You house proud town mouse, ha ha charade you are.
You’re trying to keep our feelings off the street,
you’re nearly a real treat, all tight lips and cold feet,
    and do you feel abused?

You gotta stem the evil tide,
and keep it all on the inside.
Mary, you’re nearly a treat, Mary, you’re nearly a treat,
    but you’re really a cry.

  2. I only knew about her through watching The Goodies, when they did the ep featuring Mary Carthorse going on about too much S-E- *makes a cross sign” on the telly.

July Walters is fabulous. Thanks for the heads-up, I’ll pre-set the PVR.

  3. Mary Whitehouse was an old foe of Doctor Who and whether it is deliberate or not has been scheduled on ABC1 right after Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead.
