Karl Stefanovic, the morning after

UPDATED: Nine denies assertions Karl Stefanovic was drunk on his post-Logies edition of Today, but Today Tonight was happy to ask questions.

karlstefanovic21Dear oh dear.

Historically, the Logies haven’t always been more about the ceremony itself. They’ve been about the post-Logies too. How often we have heard tales of celebrities hooking up, punching up, falling down, along with reports of what may or may not have gone down in the Crown toilets?

This week the biggest story to emerge involves Karl Stefanovic and his on air performance on Monday’s Today show.

Last night Today Tonight went to town with a beauty asking whether Karl had been drinking too much and was in any shape to host the Monday morning edition of Today, which aired from inside Crown. Their description was way more colourful of course.

With matching footage (which you can see here) it looked like a good get. The story even made reference to other celebs who had been apparently intoxicated including Mike Willesee, Molly Meldrum and John Stamos. It left Andrew O’Keefe off the montage, while his incident was an off-air moment, so was David Hasselhoff, which it included.

Significantly it left out the glaring point that Today is now a lot closer to Sunrise in ratings than it was 12 months ago.

And to think they’d all been the best of industry friends on the Red Carpet the night before?

Today Nine has denied Stefanovic was drunk.

“Karl was tired, yes, but drunk no. Emphatically,” Nine spokesman David Hurley told the Daily Telegraph.

“Stefanovic has been missing from Today for the past two days simply because he is filming a 60 Minutes story on a critical third heart operation for a desperately ill 5 year old child. Nine supports Karl to the hilt.”

Did you get that?

In Seven’s defence Nine, along with other media was all over the Andrew O’Keefe story when it hit news last year (although it says it declined to pay for footage). Stefanovic’s hosting on Monday did seem a little more, umm, vibrant than usual.

You can decide for yourself where the truth may or may not lay, with this selection of clips.

UPDATED: Today on Today Karl said:

“I guess the first thing I have to say is that yes, it was a very big Logies night, probably too big.

“I didn’t feel drunk when I woke up the next morning otherwise I would not have gone on-air. I like to think that I’m professional enough to have made that decision.

“But clearly from the vision that I have seen, I wasn’t at my best and what I want to do is apologise to anyone out there who may have, um, you know, been offended by my behaviour on Monday morning.

So, humble apologies to you all.”

  1. I look forward to seeing Karl in the morning. He and Lisa do a great job. In fact the team do a great job. They,at the very least, appear ‘real’.
So now we know Karl is human. Great. Karl should continue doing his job, and critics should check their own unblemished records… maybe take the fence posts out of their own eyes before trying to get the specks out of others.

  2. Gerrard, methinks you miss the point.
Forget your bias towards all things Nine and recall the story re Andrew O’keefe clearly drunk in the gutter in Sth Yarra.
Then I and others said, the problem now is credibility – how can Andrew,Karl and anyone else fronting a TV show mock or ridicule other people that get caught drunk or turn up for work the worse for wear.
Most of these orning shows have “hosts who love to pick on celebs going of the rails and then they belittle them. Now the boot is on the other foot.
They cannot sit in judgement anymore.
Old saying “people in glass houses should not throw stones”
Karl,Andrew now score low on “moral judgement scale.

  3. lol, he’s clearly s***faced. Why 9 thought they could cover it up is quite laughable. That’s probably the funniest thing I have ever seen from Today…very unprofessional though.

  4. oh my god we still talking about this…so what…the only point i agree is the not to turn up to work drunk…but i need to point out he is sitting in a chair talking (well slurring onMonday and alot of giggling) and he is not working with haevy machinery or making vital decisions…. also a good point he has not broken any laws, he has embarrassed himslef and family…so who cares…the 9 knockers will go to town…the 7 haters will always bring up the AOK incident…in the ned who cares…they are all aussie men who like a drink..wowsers just take a chill pill..and leave ur pro 7 and pro 9 opinions at the door…. move on

  5. Maybe if Nine held the Logies on a Friday night instead, people attending
(and also most of those viewing) can stay up as late as they want and also
drink as much alcohol as they want.

  6. So many posts on this page.

Read the comments on the youtube link, they are hilarious.

Seriously, if this is what channel Seven calls “journalism,” than I am Will Smith!

At least Karl was on a high for one day. Mel on Sunrise is always on a high, with her botox face always laughing like the blonde that she is.

And Koche is an even bigger tool. I flicked the channel a few days ago and there were three rappers who were sing “Reject the Recession.” and you wonder why today show is catching up to sunrise, and even overtaking them on occasion!

  7. Get him drunk all the time I reckon, he was way better than normal. I’ve never like the guy though, so this sort of behaviour comes as no suprise. Nine really needs to get rid of all the dead wood on their network, why not start with wooden Karl, kick him to the curb.

  8. proves what russell crowe said about journalism recently is right. Karl didn’t have blood shot eyes like a drunk he could very well have been sleep dep cause ive seen many people act the same way when they seep dep so who knows but seriously lets move on enough school yard bickering from nine and seven grow up its getting pathetic.

  9. Listening to Karl speak to Pricey on radio this morning and Karl said “I arrived at 6.30 started drinking then got to bed @ 2.00am after a good night at the logies then onto a friends house for a few more.. Up at 4.30am and went to work and I didn’t think I was drunk…
Karl also said that he was watching T.T. when the story was played and he felt quite embarassed about the whole thing.. works for 9 and watches 7 eh!!!

  10. Kudos to Lisa Wilkinson who had to work twice as hard as usual to cover for him. She already has to work twice as hard as him on a normal day to make him look half decent.

  11. As posed last night to David, can’t wait for response from the CRU (counter response unit) of Nine’s ACA. Which Seven personality will they go after first ?
Based on Daily Telegraph story – Fifi Box was their first cab off rank.
Like Andrew says “nobody noticed on Today’s set or too bloody scared to say anything.

  12. So what, leave Karl alone, he made a dull Monday morning a lot more brighter and entertaining, it’s not as though he does this kind of thing all the time. Give it a rest people and go back to your cups of tea, he had a great time. You go Karl!!

  13. Today Tonight also forgot to mention their news boss Peter Meakin. At least Stefanovic didn’t do anything illegal and put peoples lives at risk like that scumbag has done.

  14. well he looks clearly out of it to me. i agree that we can’t compare it to AOK. Andrew was just having a night out which he is within his rights to do. but to show up to work drunk. . . any workplace i know you would be fired straight away.

when you accept a job as an early morning breakfast show host they need to make sacrifices. drinking and staying up till 3:00 on logies night is one of them.

As for TT, surpised it took them till wednesday. it was in the MXmelbourne on by monday afternoon. it’s tabloid gold.

  15. A sloshed Karl is a lot more entertaining than a sober Kochie.Dirink and host more often Karl. Now we just need to get Rove sloshed before a show and he might actually become funny.
