A Current Affair inaccuracy breaches Code

A story that suggested local parking officers were "hiding" from the public is found to be inaccurate.

acatg2A 2008 story on the behaviour of local parking officers on A Current Affair has breached the Industry Code of Practice for failing to present factual material accurately.

The segment, which aired in January 2008, criticised municipal parking officers who were sitting at a bus stop taking photographs of car license plates and later issuing fines. ACA‘s assertion that the officers were “hiding” from the public was found to be inaccurate.

ACMA concluded the officers were wearing uniforms and whilst busses temporarily concealed them there was no attempt to hide, at least as defined by the Macquarie Dictionary.

ACA was last found to have breached the Code on accuracy on TCN9 in July 2007.

ACMA reiterates it is in discussion -still- with the industry as to current affairs programmes and matters of factual accuracy.

“In light of these discussions and the detailed nature of the code review process, ACMA does not, at this stage, propose to take any further action in relation to this matter.”

  1. Why anyone takes any notice of that awful programme I don’t know…. It’s really interchangeable with the Channel 7 one, and they both make me want to throw things at my tv! Please, someone create a real, gritty current affairs programme….

  2. why does it take so long to investigate this was ages ago i dont think many people will remember this story unless you watch it every day and remember everything from it (unlikely)

  3. Makes you wonder why they even bother with these ‘investigations’, have they ever taken any action against a commercial TV operator? Always, they’ll deliver a guilty verdict but slap them with a wet tram ticket as punishment.

  4. Wow! Nearly 18 months later (540 days) there has been a decision. Well done ACMA. Throw the book at them – really, realllly slowly… Phfft 😕

  5. the problem with the acma is they cant investigate unless a complaint is made, meaning there are probably many more breaches aca has made which where never investigated, also when they do it takes them literally years and then once the investigation is complete they take no action.
