Adam Lambert states the bleedingly obvious

In 1976, Elton John gave a famous interview to Rolling Stone about his sexuality. In 2009, American Idol's Adam Lambert (finally) follows suit.

lamNo surprises here. American Idol‘s Adam Lambert officially came out in an interview with Rolling Stone this week.

The magazine has posted a preview of the cover story in which Lambert unabashedly confirms his homosexuality, and the excerpts online indicate that, from this day forward he expects the media and his fans to accept him for who he is, with neither scandalized whispers nor rainbow flag-waving rallies of support.

It follows the widespread assumption about his sexuality, including the posting of private photographs online. Until then it seems he’d said not much more aside from “I have nothing to hide. I am who I am. And this is about singing … nothing else.”

In this new interview he reaffirms he is not looking to be a poster boy for civil rights. Music is his priority.

Landing the famed “cover of the Rolling Stone” for a feature interview about his sexuality is significant. In 1976, Elton John gave a famous interview in the magazine, in which he declared himself bisexual. Before that interview, John was a pop idol, as Lambert is today. He was both a rock star and one of the most popular cover boys for the teen publication 16 Magazine.

Danny Fields, then an editor at 16, has often noted that John’s popularity plummeted after the piece was published. According to Fields, John went from being “the No. 1 mail getter to none.” Much has changed in the intervening years, even though Lambert didn’t actually win Idol. No doubt there is still much acceptance to be furthered in some of the nation’s bible belt. Thankfully the country is big enough for him to have a career even without such support.

A next step for Idol will be having a contestant  open about being gay when they are actually still in contention. WIth Courtney Act, Australian Idol already broke gender and identity moulds in its first year.

  1. Thanks for the great article David : )

Adam’s career is rapidly climbing, and his sales and media attendances far exceed that of other idols from Season 8. His 2012 Movie soundtrack single Time For Miracles is an amazing example of his talent, with his own back up vocals.

The For Your Entertainment album is a mix of styles, showcasing Adam’s musical tastes, and it’s been available in Australia since mid December 2009. This is an awesome album, and it’s throwback to Glamrock echos the Aussie history of embracing that genre; and also the electropop blend of some tracks. There are ballads and pop vibes too, so it works well to suit different tastes and age groups. For Your Entertainment and Whataya Want From Me are the first two single releases, available on iTunes. They are both really catchy, but poles apart in vibe.

Adam has a huge worldwide following, and should be doing a promotional tour here in 2010.

  2. Aussie Adam Lambert fans are most welcome to join Adam’s official website. There’s a thread entitled AdamsAussies in the main discussion thread, and many of us have Twitter accounts so we can keep in touch with one another.

    Adam Lambert Rocks!

  3. I have never been taken in by any singing artist -ever!!! but this Adam Lambert mesmerizes me. I find myself on the internet regularly looking for any updates on his eminent superstardom. Unfortunately, everyone I ask have never heard of him, so I am without another Adam fan to share my excitement with.

  4. I just don’t understand why people like Adam are virtually forced to make a public and formal announcement saying they are ‘gay’. If he does, he gets ridiculed and if he doesn’t he gets ridiculed, the poor guy can’t win either way. Why do some media and journo’s try and push these people to the edge? Are hetrosexual people
expected to make an announcement to say they are straight? The thing is, I applaud him for just being him, he never hid the fact on Idol he just didn’t run around waving the rainbow flag and allowed the public to see him as just a brilliant performer. The more the media write about someone being gay and how it’s turned into a big story the more it creates a perception that being gay is abnormal. Let’s remember that Adam was on Idol when the whole issue of Prop8 was going on in California.
