AFL shifts match for live Melbourne broadcast

By David Knox on June 11, 2009 / Filed Under Programming 13

stkgAFL Chief Operating Officer Gillon McLachlan today announced the round 14 match between St Kilda and Geelong, to be played at Docklands on Sunday July 5, would be telecast live into Melbourne on Channel Seven from a revised start time of 3.10pm.

The time is one hour later than normal, which is the downside for viewers in other states.

Mr McLachlan said the AFL was delighted Channel Seven would go live with the match to enable it to be shown to the widest audience possible.

The AFL had sought to have the match shifted to the MCG, given it holds more than 100,000 spectators, compared to about 53,000 at the smaller venue.

But Etihad Stadium management were unwilling to allow the move, in another sign of the frosty relationship between the two parties, who are fighting over sponsorship and stadium deals. Etihad Management today was also embroiled in a date conflict with the AFL and a planned AC/DC concert.

Seven Melbourne of course is delighted with the chance to screen the match live.

Channel Seven Melbourne General Manager Lewis Martin said: “It’s been a great collaboration between Seven and the AFL to ensure our viewers get to see this top-of-the-table clash live on Channel Seven. We thank the AFL for being flexible with the schedule and allowing a live broadcast of a match that will be sold out.”

Brisbane views get the raw prawn. No Firday night footy.. then they telecast a game from the Gold Coast live (Adelaide v Tigers), which is against the ‘get the fans to the game’ policy. And to really mess it up they are not showing the game of the season until midnight.. (saints v cats)
Between 4 networks, 6+ channels, and numerous fat cats in the state and cooperate jungles of bureaucracy that are supposed to provide a service to the paying viewer, this is the worst sports telecasting I have ever seen.. The new Gold Coast team are doomed if this is how the booming south east queenslanders get treated.. my boys will be playing league after all I guess.. it is all that is on.
Some one up stairs wake up, please.

Why isn’t the Essendon Collingwood game live tonight? I’m sick of channel 7 treating football fans with a total lack of respect, so i will no longer be watching their coverage of the footy, Channel ten has a better understanding of what the footy public wants. Lets hope channel seven never wins the rights to football telecasting again…… ever!!!

channel 7 are the ones who should have moved their telecast time to 2:00. just more prooth the afl dont have a spine. we wont get to see this in qld and the people in melbourne wont get to see the winning team sing their song. more ad breaks as well

Every match should be live, the networks would get the most viewers that way as well.

Finally channel seven are doing something right with there AFL TV coverage in Victoria. Now Cnannel Seven needs to explain that under it’s current Broadcast agreement that in Victoria “Sunday 1.00pm matches in Canberra, Launceston or Gold Coast replayed that at approx 10.30 pm that night on Seven Network in Victoria (in addition to normal FOX Sports coverage).” So this Sunday Hawthorn v Brisbane Lions in Launceston at 1.00 pm and channel seven isn’t showing a replay at 10:30pm as it commited to under the current AFL broadcast agreement. Can Channel Seven explain that?

news from the west is that this game will now be live into wa (7news)

As I understand, viewers in NSW and ACT will still get the Sydney-North Melbourne match on July 5 (1.10pm start), while WA will show the Fremantle-Carlton game (2.40pm start). They will have to wait until the evening for the replay of the St Kilda-Geelong game on Fox Sports 1, or the midnight replay on Seven.

also, the afl dont like live games, as they think it affects people going to the game and hence revenue. B/c fox is only available to a small number of people (unlike fta) then the afl dont worry about it.

fox pay for the priviledge, fta don’t (live that is)

fta also like delayed telecasts because of the extra ads to fit into breaks after goals and quarter time breaks

as i understand it is the afl not the free to air networks that insist games are shown on a delay, although why don’t the afl insist fox sports show games delayed.
