C31 distances itself from John Elliott comments

jeIn a fairly strategic move, Channel 31 Melbourne has has expressed its concern over statements discussed by Carlton Football Club president John Elliott on his C31 show, Big Jack and Kouta on Monday night.

Over the weekend Elliott told media that during his time as club president, Calrton had paid “hush” money to women who were alleging sexual assault against players after a 1999 grand final.

The comments, made as an off the cuff remark, have sparked media interest and Elliott is to co-operate with Victoria Police investigations.

C31 General Manager Greg Dee said “These are very serious allegations, and we fully support a complete and thorough investigation of the incidents in question.”

A meeting was held this morning with the show’s producer to outline the station’s concerns, and to ensure all future episodes stick to the intended topic of AFL football, and conform to industry Codes of Practice and the Broadcasting Services Act.

C31 General Manager Greg Dee denied the comments were made to promote Mr Elliott’s show Big Jack and Kouta. “…it’s not our remit. We’re a community station providing access to underrepresented and marginalised groups, and other locally generated content. We give everyone a guernsey as long as they abide by the laws and the rules.”

After denying the comments were to promote the C31 show, the same Press Release  reiterated C31′s push for digital spectrum as well as talking up its 3 football shows -none of which is likely to interest Victoria Police that much.

Big Jack and Kouta is an entertaining show and anything else is irrelevant.

Did anyone refer it up to him?

Wonder if this would have an impact on John Elliott’s son’s chances of getting Liberal preselection for Higgins.
