Friday: Nine News extends to 50mins

Updated: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane bulletins extend to one hour to cover the death of Michael Jackson.

ninesydney3Updated: Nine News has announced it is extending its bulletin to 50 minutes for this evening (Friday) presumably to cover the biggest news of the day: the death of Michael Jackson.

It will run for 50 minutes in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane (ironically the last day of work for Bruce Paige), amended from plans for one hour.

A Current Affair will screen from 6:50 – 7:30pm. Two and a Half Men will not air at its usual time.

Nine has also broken into its morning schedule with extended News and the Today show.

Nine Afternoon News will also air from 4pm for one hour, elbowing The Shak out of schedule.

  1. The internet and sites such as facebook and twitter almost came to a standstill when Mikey J died y/day. I think that shows the massive public interest in this story.
To al those saying there is too much coverage: remember people don’t sit down and watch all 90 minutes. People come home and turn on the TV and want to see it.
I don’t think there has been an over-reaction at all. There is massive public interest.

  2. Seven in Brissie only ran a 1/2hr bulletin, then TT.

Nine did a better job in my eyes than Seven, by doing the hard work themselves, rather than relying on a American net’s footage.

The only letdown was the Paige farewell. I would think that Bruce deserved more, than what he got. But I think QTQ’s news will probably win the night.

  3. Yes Michael Jackson’s death is a shock but Nine is spending too much time on it. Farrah Fawcett has just been pushed asidle along with the other news of the day by Nine. I think that is a bad news by Nine. They can only show so much, and having ACA go for an hour with another Michael Jackson story just tops it off.

  4. Sorry my apologies. I thought I read somewhere that wasn’t his voice. So if they don’t show it tonight i bet they will soon. Im actually in shock that 9 are not going to show a two and a half men episode. That would be a first.

  5. Seven did an hour on Farrah from NBC 12-1pm then an hour of general news with some new MJ material 1-2pm. Seven doesn’t need an hour of news at 6. They have TT to do 30 mins on bith MJ & Farrah. Hope someone airs “The Burning Bed” over the weekend – whoever has rights to it.

  6. Seven News is showing a documentary on Farrah between midday and 1pm today (it’s got the red seven news watermark). It wasn’t scheduled, but stumbled upon it by chance. Just like Princess Diana’s death overshadowed Mother Teresa, Michael Jackson will also overshadow Farrah.

  7. Farrah’s death has very much been overshadowed by Michael Jackson’s death on Nine. Their extended coverage was pretty much devoted to Michael Jackson – with the same footgae repeated over and over. they could have at least devoted a little time to pay some tribute to Farrah Fawcett, other than just mention. If you turned Nine on you might not even know she had passed away.

  8. Im sure 7 will do the hour thing. Yeah it’s sad he died and he was a great singer but he has been reportedly been ill for awhile. Call me heartless but I just don’t think we need another half an hour on his life. I can’t believe the today show just went on and on about it.

I feel sorry for Farrah because her death will be very much shadowed over jacko’s death

  9. If I were QTQ, I’d move the Paige farewell and Extra farewell to tomorrow night and go for a 90 minute bulletin from 5:30.

Today’s not the right time to farewell a newsreader, on the day of the biggest news story of a generation.

It would then allow for a better farewell for both involved.

  10. Ridiculous overreaction. He’s a pop singer. Give him a five minute eulogy on the news if you want, but an extra half hour? I don’t care how famous he is: that’s just absolute tripe.

  11. “KAK isn’t live on Fridays”. Ah, the pifalls of pre-recorded “live” shows. Pity, KAK would have done it better. I’m guessing WIN will have to drop ACA to fit Nine News & WIN News between 6pm & 7:30 NRL.

  12. Talk about overkill. Maybe a special program at 7pm but hardly warrants a one-hour news extention. Nine needs to improve its crap-quality pictures from LA. As with the LA fires, Nine’s picture quality is VHS-copy-of-a VHS whereas TEN’s is perfect. Why let Karl & Lisa waffle for an extra 2 hrs? Kerrie Anne would have done a much better job.

  13. i guess for 9 extending the news is taken lightly because 2.5men is easily cancelled but 7 needs major schedule changes with H&A if 7 were to do it i guess they’d do:

    FRI:
    6:00 news
    7:00 TT
    7:30 BH&G
    8:30 footy
(NRL states could just delay their movie.)

    MON:
    7:00 1hr H&A
    8:00 HIMYM final

  14. i cant believe how australia’s obsession with celebrity stories has grown so much in the last few years. doubling the length of a news bulletin is way over the top for the death of one person who hasn’t been in the public eye for decades.

  15. I agree. how much can be said. Its tragic and a big story but to fill an hour. Probably with people saying how much they loved him. A tragic loss to the industry but I dont know how much ‘scoop’ there can be.
