21 year old little-known actress Karen Gillan has won the role of the next assistant in Doctor Who.
Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast in the UK next year. She impressed executive producer Steven Moffat at her audition despite only having had smaller roles in Channel 4’s Stacked, The Kevin Bishop Show, Rebus and James Nesbitt’s forthcoming film Outcast. She also had a part in the Who episode The Fires Of Pompeii.
“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion. – I just can’t wait to get started,” she said.
“The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it.
“Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him,” she added.
Moffat said they saw some “amazing actresses” but when Gillan “walked through the door the game was up”.
He described her as “funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it”.

I wanted Hannah Murry. 🙁
Uh, RTD made the new Who into a pile of juvenile junk. A new helmer can’t possibly do any worse.
Craig, it wasn’t in HD. Unlike your bittorrent version, which probably was.
CK.
if the ABC shows doctor who specials the day after it aired in the UK they would get more viewers
Well that sucks. I was hoping for Hannah Murray, who was rumoured for the role.
Welcome aboard Karen.
@ndro: Billy Ray Cyrus for Doc12 FTW!
“Don’t break my hearts, my achy breaky hearts!”
I really think they needed an older companion for the younger doctor. This just makes his task so much harder. He can’t act his age, needs to act experienced and confident. Playing against a similary aged person, playing her age will make it all that much harder. Just seems like it’ll at least look like Dr Who the High School Years
errr… I’m afraid Steven Moffat is going to turn this great franchise into the Hannah Montana of Sci-Fi.
I just hope ABC can fast track it and unlike last night not show the Easter special a month late when most of the fans would have seen it, but it was nice to see again, this time in HD…
