It will be known as The 7pm Project.
It will start on July 20th and it will look at the day’s news live everynight.
Led by comedian co-hosts Dave Hughes and Charlie Pickering, The 7PM Project will be “the simplest new idea in television for a long time.” The news of the day will be brought to audiences by Carrie Bickmore. The show will have a team of correspondents delivering stories from around Australia and around the world into the studio every night. Ruby Rose will be bringing viewers all the latest music news. The media and sport beat will be covered by James Mathison.
TEN says “The 7PM Project is a place where people who are genuinely interested in the world around them come together to talk, offering genuine conversation in a space previously crowded by scandal and spin. While it’s not afraid to be serious, The 7PM Project can guarantee that there will be no miracle diets, no stories that ‘no parent can afford to miss’, and virtually no dodgy plumbers. The 7PM Project is the news un-spun. It is not a satirical newscast in the style of Jon Stewart’s Daily Show, but a TV show joining in the conversations going on in living rooms around the country.”
Rose and Mathison join the three names tipped by TV Tonight earlier this week for the show produced by Roving Enterprises. More names will be announced over the coming weeks.
Mathison recently stepped asided from Australian Idol although he was quoted at the time as saying, “I am not going to be on TV for a while now, not Dancing With The Stars or anything like that. I just want to explore other music opportunities while I am here in New York and at home.”
TEN Programmer David Mott said, “We’ve had great success in introducing brave projects to the Aussie TV landscape such as MasterChef Australia and Talkin‘ ‘Bout Your Generation and if we get this right, The 7PM Project could be a game changer for TEN in that very crucial 7pm timeslot. Not to mention our digital platform which plays a key role in the experience, driving content and discussions to the show, making it a truly integrated TV /on-line offering and a place for audiences to share their stories, opinions and interact.”
TEN has surely found 7pm success with MasterChef Australia and The Biggest Loser but it struggled with Taken Out and too often has had to rely on The Simpsons as filler.
Amended.

As long as they don’t have stupid segmants like Rove’s show, it might do OK, but not as well as Masterchef as it won’t have the same mass appeal.
This sounds good i’ll definatly be giving it a go, though it does sound a bit to serious for Hughsey
Sounds interesting! As much as I love the formality of news broadcasts, something like this would be pretty nice.
@Philm:
If they were going to do it 7PM all year (which is feasable from the style of show it is) I reckon they’d put Biggest Loser, MasterChef and Big Brother (if they do go ahead and ressurect the show next year) at 6:30PM to try and take out Today Tonight and A Current Affair, and then have Neighbours at 6PM to replace The Simpsons.
James Mathison? Yuck!
Is it just me, or does James Mathison look like he’s been photoshopped into this photograph?
The 7pm Project? We’re an inventive bunch when naming shows aren’t we (Sunday Night, 60 Minutes, 9am, The Morning Show etc….)
Sounds pretty interesting, though I can’t stand Hughsy or Ruby.
So does this mean John Foreman will be playing the intro music? 😛
So, this is basically a dumbed-down version of The Panel? Hmmmm.
Sounds interesting. I think however that Stephen Quartermain should cover sports news, just like what he had done on The Panel. Brad McEwan will also be a good choice as he hosted the 7pm edition of Sports Tonight on ONE before it was moved to 9.30pm!
I know Ruby is an It Girl and everybody loves her … but has anyone actually watched her on MTV? They can’t have – she’s awful.
Sounds good i wjill give it o go
Oh, lordy. Good host. Bad host. Based on the latter, I can’t watch.
Oiimmm anngry.
what a great cross section of multicultural australia those hosts represent…
oh, wait….
Expect an axeing after a month. Friends will be back filling that spot before you know it. Too many idiots involved if u ask me!
Off topic slightly:-
Congratulations David.
This article has been ‘twittered’ and ‘retwittered’ by quite a number of people, Rove and Andrew G in particular. As a result TV Tonight is capturing a very big audience indeed. Well done.
I was certain it was going to be hamish and andy- they can easliy rush from their 4-6pm radio show and prepare a half hour show in time.
I hope you’re being sarcastic? That’s a ridiculous time frame!
I’ll give it a go.
Ten may have some moderate success with this.
Sound like its going to be a good show can’t wait
Do we really need more panel shows dissecting the day/week events or for that matter…cross promoting shows – which 10 is one of the worst offenders of. I think not. Sorry, this concept is pants.
Hmmm….James Kerley is def. involved too.
And Dave Hughes……Overexposed!!!!!!!
Just how money-hungry is this guy??
This is starting to sound really good. I really hope for Ten and the sake of Aussie TV being innovative that this is a great show and it works.
Home and Away has been there a million years. US sitcom repeats is hardly exciting. I really feel the 7pm slot is long overdue for some excitement…..on any network!
Hopefully Ten is getting the format perfect, and the show strikes a chord with the aud. Based on massive success of Talkin’ bout my gen, Rove and TGYH – it could well do. Also very topical – talking about the days events and news, so going forward – it’s DVR proof. (Not so important now in Oz – but will become more so very soon)
I see this show getting great demos too….
And…..the launch pad could not be better – coming out of Masterchef – which will get massive numbers in the final weeks. If Ten is smart, they will offer a preview of this show behind the Masterchef finale – even if it’s not in the 7pm slot.
interesting that they mention the show “five days a week for the whole year”. Next year could be the biggest loser and masterchef at 7:30 like i heard somewhere (probably here) a while back.
Out of all the hosts, i’d only watch for Ruby and Charlie. Carrie and Hughsey aren’t that funny or interesting…… and as for Bug-eyes…….. ugh….
interesting, sounds pretty boring, but will give it a go. it will have to be some pretty good news headlines to pull in viewers
