Reality check: Where are Survivor & Amazing Race?

By David Knox on June 8, 2009 / Filed Under Programming 42

jeff_probstReality fans you have been heard.

TV Tonight took the questions to Nine and Seven on the absence of Survivor and The Amazing Race from our screens.

In the case of Survivor there are now two full seasons (Gabon & Tocantins) that have aired in the US. One more season of The Amazing Race has also been run and won on CBS.

So where are they?

Both networks indicated the franchises are still important to them, and both indicated they would be coming.

Seven confirmed The Amazing Race would return in July. There are 4 more eps of Private Practice to air, so if it returns to 9:30pm Thursday, it could begin as early as July 9, though Seven isn’t saying.

Despite some speculation that Survivor is being held for Nine’s new entertainment channel, a spokesperson confirmed it is still “very much” in the mix for broadcast on its primary channel.

Nine was unable to indicate how far off a new series would be, only to indicate the scheduling of it “in the coming months.”

So there you have it…

    It’s on GO! August 11.

  2. Sandy July 28, 2009 at 10:26 pm -

Come on nine, give us survivor, what ever time you put it on enough people will watch it!!!!!!!!! please don’t put it on any new channel you may have in the works as not all people have this yet.
    Loving amazing race!!!!!
    But, please having Survivor withdrawals!!!!!!!!

  3. Mandy July 14, 2009 at 4:12 pm -

Okay, I’m really disappointed to hear that Survivor may or may not be shown.

  4. Mary July 1, 2009 at 4:31 pm -

I wonder if Networks are aware that some areas don’t even have digital let alone the new channels they are talking about. I had to disconect the set top box to receive just the normal channels let alone HD/digital etc, and were flat out getting a decent reception either.

So much for Channel 9 showing Survivor: Gabon last summer as it promised. It’s 6 months later now and still nothing despite “being important” to them. We’ll probably have seen Samoa before Gabon is even shown on pathetic Channel 9. Really hoping that season 20 is All-Stars, given that it’s being filmed back to back in Samoa.

This is the worst news I’ve ever read. These two junkie and jokes of shows coming back to FTA TV. Pi**’em off for good.

I loved the new Survivor – Tocantins, I recently watched the latest series, in the words of Molly… do yourself a favour, and watch it. It will have you hooked in the first 10 minutes. Amazing how you never get tired of this show. Survivor is the best, chuck out the rest.

Thanks very much David for following through on these favourites of ours.

As per Andrew, I have faith in seeing the TAR on 7 but not with 9 & Survivor.

    Ditto on Lewis’ comments.

  11. Andrew B June 9, 2009 at 3:59 am -

I have the faith that 7 will show the Amazing Race, yes. It was July or after Olympics last year when they put it on.

As for 9, I have no faith at all as to when they will show anything. And no doubt Survivor is “in the mix” with 20 other shows they have the right to and are not airing or are seasons behind – none of which will ever be seen until 20-1, 2.5 men, etc stop rating well enough to justify the overload and bombardment of repeats just because they are cheap to air. All of their shows not yet aired or axed are definitely enough to fill a new channel prime time, it will be very disappointing if the new channel becomes nothing more than more of the same, with none of these shows getting a look in.

  12. Lewis June 8, 2009 at 9:51 pm -

@PH: I ‘really want to watch these TV shows’, but I haven’t seen them yet. I can’t afford sufficient internet speed/size to be able to download TV shows. Not everyone has acceess to the internet to find their TV.

@Casey: Ratings may have been on the decline, but when Nine showed Micronesia late last year at 10.30 on a Tuesday, it pulled 550,000+ per episode. Have a look at what the current crop of 10.30 shows are getting. And keep in mind that when Micronesia was finally aired in Aus, it was 9 months old.

    Thanks David!

If Flash Forward doesn’t start til September, why on earth are ch 7 promoting it now? It is that ” What did you see?”

  14. Jarran June 8, 2009 at 7:08 pm -

Got tired waiting. Already watched TAR14, and it’s one of the best yet.

  15. RichoTB June 8, 2009 at 5:30 pm -

I expect Bones to move to 8.30 Wednesdays once Criminal Minds finishes in 4 weeks, as DWTS is taking over the Sunday slot. Amazing Race is probably headed for Thursdays 9.30pm

  16. gerry June 8, 2009 at 5:22 pm -

Maybe the newtorks are purposely keeping it on the shelf, so viewers will miss them heaps, and then when it comes back, they will watch it. This is smart, but could backfire, as you can just download them off the internet.

  17. Mac June 8, 2009 at 5:12 pm -

If 7 & 9 were to schedule these shows while they are still new I wouldn’t bother ********ing them and would happilly pay attention to the advertisers commercial breaks weekly. But 7 & 9 don’t care enough so I do do the dirty thing.

    Yous snooze you lose.

  18. JohnP June 8, 2009 at 3:15 pm -

So much for the “Now being fast tracked!” spin we were hearing from the networks last year. They’re back to their usual treatment of viewers…

  19. Belinda June 8, 2009 at 3:10 pm -

Flash Forward doesn’t start until September, so it won’t be that just yet.

  20. Tepee June 8, 2009 at 1:55 pm -

Thanks for the info David. I can’t wait for TAR to come back.

  21. bindi June 8, 2009 at 1:45 pm -

if thursdays are going to be completely cleared up on 7 jerome i wonder if it might become amazing race 7:30, flash forward 8:30 (they are now advertising this a fair bit so it has to be soon), don’t know what at 9:30. i’m hoping they finally get around to stargate atlantis too, they are 2 seasons behind on it as well.

  22. Casey June 8, 2009 at 12:41 pm -

It’s hard to believe Nine’s considers Survivor ‘important’, when its Aus ratings have been on the decline in recent years, hence the reason new episodes get relegated to 10.30 pm timeslots these days, which is fair enough.

  23. PH June 8, 2009 at 12:36 pm -

As others have noted those who really want to watch these shows have already done so and without the incredible amount of advertisements that the tv stations seem to pack in.

FTA has a future if, and only if the station owners realise that things have changed and they they are merely one of many different sources for viewers to obtain the product. If one source wont provide the product then another will, and in this case cheaper and at better quality.

  24. brendan June 8, 2009 at 11:58 am -

I like many others have already seen Gabon and Tocantins but when channel nine airs them I will still watch them to support the show so we get Samoa and season 20 and more.

  25. henry June 8, 2009 at 11:38 am -

Two seasons in Samoa? You know they must be doing big for season 20.

  26. effdee June 8, 2009 at 11:30 am -

Those of us who want to see them have already got them online
When will these network wake up! it’s 2009 not 1959.

  27. David Knox June 8, 2009 at 11:28 am -

Yes I referenced Survivor: Samoa a while ago, although two seasons there is very interesting!

  28. mikey June 8, 2009 at 11:22 am -

I think it’s fairly safe to say that the don’t actually know if and when they’ll show these shows, especially in Nine’s case… Their scheduling is a week to week activity, so really we’ll just have to do as the schedulers do and “see what happens”.

  29. IMO June 8, 2009 at 11:04 am -

Yay! Best TV news I’ve heard in a long time. Thank you David. Good to know I haven’t avoided all those internet spoilers for nothing.

  30. Bogues June 8, 2009 at 10:48 am -

Amazing Race is a 7:30pm show, not a 9:30pm show. Doesn’t really matter to me. I’ve already seen season 14. New Zealand also is showing season 14 of TAR currently too.

  31. Nwest June 8, 2009 at 10:28 am -

Just heard from a friend in Somoa that Survivor are fliming the next 2 seasons in Somoa back to back…a one week break beyween the 2 of them. A good way to save on the budget!

  32. Benno June 8, 2009 at 10:14 am -

Nine was unable to indicate how far off a new series would be, only to indicate the scheduling of it “in the coming months.”

Right after the run of 8 reruns of 2 1/2 men per week comes to a close…and people run out of embarrassing illnesses…

  33. Daniel June 8, 2009 at 10:07 am -

Call them answers? Gee if that’s what Seven and Nine call an answer then that’s pretty pathetic! It’s such a shame 2 brilliant Reality TV Seires like these have been treated so poorly by the networks. It’s obvious that Survivor & Race have many Australian fans that have been waiting very patiently for the new seasons to air, and from the looks of things we will be waiting even longer :(

  34. Lewis June 8, 2009 at 10:04 am -

Argh! At least TAR seems to be coming soon…

  35. Mark June 8, 2009 at 9:19 am -

What does it really matter when you can get them via the internet. This is the future! FTA is a dying service.

  36. Craig June 8, 2009 at 8:59 am -

This is typical of Nine (and to a lessor extent Seven) to say a show is important but hold off airing it for 2 series! when are they going to learn people have easy access to the Internet and can watch them within hours of their original broadcast and not wait 2 years.

  37. Jason June 8, 2009 at 8:58 am -

Looking forward to it. Stuff like Random acts of kindness just makes me gag…

  38. jaxmachine1007 June 8, 2009 at 8:31 am -

thank you for the info david

good to see two of my favorite reality show coming back to tv

  39. JM June 8, 2009 at 8:22 am -

Already seen then…. Just not good enough in this day and age!!

  40. Neon Kitten June 8, 2009 at 8:13 am -

Nine knows all too well that the vast majority of Survivor fans have already seen the two seasons they haven’t shown. “In the mix”, bollocks. Presumably “the mix” is that box of tapes of shows that get scheduled as filler when viewers aren’t important to the bean counters at Nine and scam infomercials and porn ads pay the power bills.

It still amuses me that this network more than any other can complain about “illegal” downloading of TV shows, yet refuse to give their viewers one of the shows that could help turn that trend around – instead preferring endless 20 To 1 filler and endless, endless 2.5 Men and CSI.

Nine, to paraphrase a line from a famous Stephen King novel: you bought it. Now you own it – and the consequences.

  41. rattle June 8, 2009 at 8:06 am -

Thanks for making the effort to do that David.

As much as I’d love to watch Survivor here in HD, I’m not waiting for 9 to make up their mind. Also, going on 9′s previous history, they’d only screw up the scheduling anyway.
No wonder people prefer other ways of enjoying their fave shows.

Oh and speaking of Survivor, I recently watched the latest series and it’s amazing how after all this time, it can still have you on the edge of your seat and it never gets tired. Survivor is still king of the reality shows.

  42. Jerome June 8, 2009 at 8:01 am -

private practice, greys anatomy and ghost whisperer all finish within weeks of each other especially if there are double finals. so 7 will have a completely new look thursday they could put TAR at 7:30, 8:30 or 9:30.
