Independent US entertainment blogger Nikki Finke, who is famous for her insider exclusives, has sold her industry blog, Deadline Hollywood Daily, to Mail Media Corporation in a deal reported to be worth as much as $15m US.
The tireless Finke, known for logging stories after 11pm on Fridays, broke news of the sale to MMC yesterday on her own blog, saying the deal would see her become general manager and editor-in-chief. However, she did not reveal the terms.
The rise of Deadline Hollywood Daily illustrates the growing influence of entertainment-business bloggers—particularly Ms. Finke—as the clout of traditional trade publications like Variety and the Hollywood Reporter has waned. The New York Observer named her its “Media Mensch Of The Year” and said “she’s demonstrated that one determined reporter — with none of the support or backing of a media outfit, but also none of the entangling alliances — can, in fact, beat the big guys at their own game.”
While published with a business skew, the site rose to prominence during the Hollywood Writers’ Strike.

No Gavin it doesn’t. And by the same logic, we don’t have the same showbiz industry to sustain the same level of daily stories either. You neglected to note that recycled stories are always re-written, contradicted, embellished, merged, compared and credited with a source. Blogging by its definition is ‘web-logging.’ A big part of this site is designed to give people an overview of stories that are out there. I’d happily add more staff but you just know there will be a subscription fee….
Australia doesn’t have the population and large enough industry to attract those sort of blogger numbers, plus 90% of this site’s TV news content is just recycled from other sites.
