Gone: The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Returning: Gilmore Girls

By David Knox on July 3, 2009 / Filed Under Programming 19

gilmoreIn disappointing programming amendments from Nine (ahem…), the network indicated it has shelved plans to return the fifth season of critically-acclaimed series The Wire and new eps of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Both were due to start in late night slots next week.

The Wire was set to air next Tuesday night, but is now replaced with US current affairs 20 / 20.

Curb Your Enthusiasm
was due for 12am Thursday (midnight Wednesday) but is now replaced with Gilmore Girls.

The episode “To Whom It May Concern” is S7E12, a first run in Sydney and Brisbane. It is a repeat for Melbourne viewers.

TV Tonight hears the series could be re-scheduled for August, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

ABC will also screen the first series of The Wire on ABC2 in coming months.

Gilmore Girls isn’t crap, it’s an acquired taste, but everyone has their own opinions so I’ll let it be.

BTW here in QLD north of Brisbane we didn’t get either, WIN TV is stuck with Ellen and local news :(

So now we are further behind, maybe Nine will use it as filler on the 2nd SD channel, whenever that happens for their WIN customers…

    Aaaarrgghh!!!

My TV guide still says “Curb” at 12am. It made my day. And this news about Gilmore Girls just un-made it. Like many have said, air it at 12:30am, 1am, 2am – replace Danoz / Guthy Renker / Entertainment Tonight for goodness sake! Channel 9′s last minute changes of programming are getting predictable.

    grrrrrr.

I can’t believe they are replacing good shows like Curb and The Wire with crap like The Gilmore Girls.

With its PG rating 30 Rock could be placed pretty much anywhere decent on the schedule. At least 9 are severely limited with their timeslot options for Curb and The Wire. Doesn’t excuse their disappearance though.

ETA – the only reason I watch GG on Nine is on Arena it’s still only in 4:3, the DVD weren’t even in 16:9 but on ch9 they are in HD 16:9…

How did I miss this yesterday? Yay for the return of the Gilmore Girls but OMG 12am! what happened to Saturday arvos instead of old re-run movies?

Arena is now ahead of GG for the remaining Sydney and Brisbane markets where the final season is yet to finish.

And just a few short weeks ago I was applauding Nine on the very site for finally showing these two brilliant shows to Australian audiences…

Well, no wonder people are downloading or buying the DVD’s… Seriously Nine, you are pathetic. What has changed so dramatically in the 12AM timeslot that you need to reverse your decision?

I guess it’s always possible these two shows will be on Go99 at a decent hour…

There’s just too much to choose from at 12am Thursdays. I suppose nine were thinking about the viewers, and minimising the number of conflicts. How thoughtful…

Mmm thank god for the internet in the case of Weeds and you’re right 30 Rock gets a much better run than most.

Because Gilmore Girls is so a late night show *eye roll*

  11. David Knox July 4, 2009 at 12:18 am -

They have been pretty good to 30 Rock (even though we would all love a better timeslot). Compare this with Weeds, The Office, Curb, Conchords etc….

Not that I’m a follower of any of these shows but I love how Seven ruins shows like this.

They did it with Arrested and I was addicted enough to stay up all those nights watching it and constantly being annoyed by last minute changes where it would be pushed back another hour or half hour so I’d finish watching it in the early morning…

That Gilmore Girls episode may be first run on free-to-air TV but it aired on Pay-TV last week. So Arena will be a week ahead of Nine regardless.

… As for WIN regional viewers; that network had/has no intention in ever airing the programmes mentioned above. I guess 12 hour old repeats of The Ellen Degeneres Show are more of a priority for them?

I love Gilmore Girls. Channel nine doesn’t deserve them. The series ended ages ago, and they still haven’t shown it.

Gilmore Girls fans – just buy the dvds.

  16. Andrew B July 3, 2009 at 5:39 pm -

They used to show it weekend afternoons. Why not then? Agree with Ryan.

Besides – you can see it on Arena, true fans have the DVDs, and others that used to be fans would have given up…

  17. Matt July 3, 2009 at 5:31 pm -

sheesh….. why can’t nine show curb at 2am even(they aired season 3 or 4 at this timeslot about 3-4 years ago), at least it would be aired!!
    :-S

  18. Ryan July 3, 2009 at 5:08 pm -

Yeah, because we all know that 12:00am Thursday is a crucial ratings slot and by no means a graveyard for filler material. What does it matter if it is ratings poison when 4/5ths of the country is asleep?
Surely more Curb fans are up that late than fans of Gilmore Girls, anyway.

Perhaps Nine are saving The Wire and Curb Your Enthusiasm for their new digital channel? But even if they are this is still a dissapointing move. And thought they had finished airing Gilmore Girls. According to IMDb this episode aired in the States two and a half years ago!
