studentsNext week’s Insight looks a recent attacks on overseas students and asks “Are they racially based?”

The SBS forum hosted by Jenny Brockie features international students, community leaders and the education sector and examines what’s behind the attacks, why they’re drawn to Australia for study and whether they’re getting what they are paying for.

Recent attacks on Indian students in particular has focussed attention on the broader experiences of international students who have enrolled in Australian universities, TAFE’s and private colleges.

Stories of exploitation, poor accommodation and sub-standard colleges reveal a disturbing picture of what life is like for some of our international students.

Some students are reluctant to register complaints for fear that they may jeopardise completion of their study and any chance of gaining permanent residency in Australia.

This airs 7:30pm Tuesday on SBS ONE.

  1. I have a friend from India studying Physiotherapy at the Australian University SA . She has recently completed her exams. She did not pass her recent exam and apparently students are given opportunities to do the exam again once it is reviewed. However, she now has to pay the lecturer $200.00 to have her results reviewed in order to find out if she can sit the exam again. Unfair! Not Australian! and definitely a “money spinner” for the university. There is nothing she can do other than pay them!
This is an absolute disgrace and a huge blot on Australia generally.

  2. Congratulations!

Advertised as: – What is behind the attacks on Indian students?

This program went totally off the subject and more to what is the real motivation for them coming here.

Further education or the chance of permanent residency?

The government regulations required and the misleading advertising attracting them here.

Talking for just a few short minutes with vague suggestions of whether the attacks were racist or opportunistic by two representatives of law enforcement but no clear attempts to speak about the perpetrators their motivation or their background was discussed.
