ONE in Tassie: close but not yet

By David Knox on July 1, 2009 / Filed Under News 63

oneid11Negotiations between Tasmanian network TDT and Network TEN for the delivery of ONE HD have caused a delay in launching the channel on July 2nd, in line with Southern Cross.

But the network remains committed to ONE and is hoping to make an announcement shortly.

“We’re expecting to put out a Press Release tomorrow to announce what’s going on,” General Manager Stephen Giles told TV Tonight.

“Certainly we are going ahead with ONE and what I want to make sure is we give an accurate time,” he said.

“TDT is still committed to providing ONE HD. At this stage we are finalising negotiations and we hope to be putting out a Press Release in the next day or so.”

Last month, Southern Cross COO Greg Dodgson told TV Tonight that ONE would launch in Tasmania on July 2nd, but unforseen circumstances have since caused a delay.

There are no immediate plans for an SD broadcast of ONE.

hmm.. everyone’s opinion of SCTV and TDT management grows daily worse while we all wait for a rough estimate of when we might get a rough estimate of when we might roughly expect to actually see transmission..

    hey,
im from tassie and im 14 years old and i would like to know when ONE HD is coming because i just bought a HD set top box so could you please get back to me.
    Thanks!

  6. David Knox July 4, 2009 at 10:50 pm -

It was actually SC 10 boss Greg Dodgson who had told me July 2nd for Tassie, not Stephen Giles. Ditto the reason for the delay. TDT’s Stephen Giles said he hoped to have a Press Release out during the week but obviously that didn’t yet happen. Not defending anyone here, just clarifying the issue…

    surprise surprise….
another broken promise by the networks. I knew it was too good to be true, Tassie might eventually get One HD by July 3rd in the year 2015 !!!
Stephen Giles, if you cant deliver what you promise you shouldnt be in the job. Maybe the network needs someone in that position that can deliver on its commitments. You cant even get a press release out to the public. What hope have we got of ever getting this channel? “Unforeseen circumstances”, such a easy response. Sounds like BS to me!

  8. Tazzles July 4, 2009 at 5:24 pm -

Perhaps Mr Giles’ most eloquent statement so far was having SCTV screen the Melbourne vs WCE game this afternoon in HD with the ONE LIVE logo prominent in the top right corner.

  9. Justin July 4, 2009 at 1:26 pm -

I’m ex pat Hobart boy living in Melbourne disgusted that Tassie just cannot get its act together with services…

I really do want to move back but there are just so many things Hobart is still missing. It is after all a capital city yet foxtel is branded under austar. Adsl2+ is hardly available and even if it is it runs at a 10th of the speed as my connection in melbz at 20Mbps.
Why cant the channels just be 7, 10 and 9 here?? I’m hella confused throw out the rubbish channels of TDT, Southern Cross and Win.
Bring on ONEHD trust me you guys that don’t think you will like it will like it. More sport will move to One and free up your other channels.
And god I’m glad I’ll be back in Melbz this week to watch the live F1 Qualifiers and live F1 Race. :P

    David Knox said:

“Managing Director of TDT I spoke to on Wednesday. Committed to ONE HD.”

Seems to me he’s only committed to silence over ONE HD.

how bout u give us HD in tassie

  12. Shane July 4, 2009 at 2:06 am -

    SCTV=Fail

  13. David Knox July 3, 2009 at 10:22 pm -

Right.. up to you whether you to decide whether he would know more than the Managing Director of TDT I spoke to on Wednesday. Committed to ONE HD. No plans for SD (Southern Cross also has no plans for SD).

  14. Bazza July 3, 2009 at 9:56 pm -

Spoke to a bloke at JBHiFi who said Tassie will get ONEHD some time but it will be in SD not HD

  15. Dale July 3, 2009 at 9:45 pm -

can’t Mr Giles find the switch

  16. Tazzles July 3, 2009 at 7:45 pm -

I guess there have been more “unforeseen circumstances” or perhaps Mr Giles is having trouble finding the right form of words to say how sorry he is to be so incompetent at foreseeing circumstances, that he has to repeatedly break his word.

  17. Tony K July 3, 2009 at 6:32 pm -

We can’t even get a press release when they say as Quoted below on July 1 so lets just not hold our breath while waiting for One HD to arrive in Tas. Some of these. GM’s just thrive on publicity.

    Quote From July 1.
We’re expecting to put out a Press Release tomorrow to announce what’s going on,” General Manager Stephen Giles told TV Tonight

Where is it Mr Stephen Giles? its July 3 now if you never noticed!!!

  18. Tony July 3, 2009 at 5:02 pm -

If there is a media release, where is it posted? Does anyone know?

  19. David Knox July 3, 2009 at 4:49 pm -

    No.

  20. Tony July 3, 2009 at 4:41 pm -

Has there been any so called Further Media Releas’s yet? I certainly would’nt mind reading something about this.

  21. flacksta owen nd dale July 3, 2009 at 3:08 pm -

wel… tassie rocks so if ur not gonna give it too us you can suck

  22. Michael July 3, 2009 at 2:00 pm -

    how f%*$ ing pathetic.
tasmania is just a state like every other state in australia you d!&@ snaps
we aren’t a piece of chewing gum wanting to be chewed then spat out at you’re leisure.
How about youse figure it all out. when you can just flick the switch tell us ONEHD will be on

  23. Tazzles July 3, 2009 at 11:10 am -

How sad to see a communications company so pathetically poor at communicating with its customers.

  24. Ben July 3, 2009 at 7:39 am -

So much for this ‘announcement’…I have not seen one published report of any announcement or ‘board meeting’ taking place. Once again us Tasmanians get unfairly treated and shoved aside. And people wonder why we are the butt of jokes??! This has got to stop and we need to take a stand!

  25. John July 2, 2009 at 11:22 pm -

This is now beyond a joke…why announce ONE HD will be switched on in Tasmania and then not do it?? The only reason I think of is poor planning. I gather the commercial negotiations have been finalised and now they are thinking about the implementation details. If this is the case I would have thought this would have been considered by TDT prior to making this announcement….how pathetic!!!!!

  26. Dale Sheppard July 2, 2009 at 9:38 pm -

I am a full on motorsport fan so hurry up…..

  27. Greg July 2, 2009 at 9:36 pm -

you’re all f***ing pathetic………………i agree with adam’s comments……..tasmania will stand idly by while we get buttf***ed by the TEN HD…..

  28. Dale July 2, 2009 at 9:34 pm -

that is so true twice we have been given the run around with ONE HD ..it sure is crap it cant be that hard to get it right .. we want ONE HD same as rest of Australia.. so come on give us Tasmanians a fair go

  29. Adam July 2, 2009 at 9:34 pm -

    its all a flamin scam…..
its time someone was honest with tassie vieweres and say
“It’s not on for Tasmanian viewers, we at the network are sorry”, blah blah f-ing blah…..
stand up and stand by your obviously inferior product……….
    Weak!!!!

  30. Ian July 2, 2009 at 9:31 pm -

Raced home to switch on “ONEHD” but no luck.
once again the corporate B S restricts the mainland product being broadcast in Tassie. Pull your socks up GM’s and CEO’s. give us a break. Don’t leave us in the dark, get a press release out ASAP.

  31. Mark Rayner July 2, 2009 at 9:21 pm -

    This is absolute BS!
This is now twice One HD have advertised that the channel will go live without any result, pathetic!

  32. Robert July 2, 2009 at 4:42 pm -

@Grant: I doubt it, if southerncrossbroadcasting.com.au is the Southern Cross website, then the last media release was in 2007…

  33. Grant July 2, 2009 at 3:33 pm -

Any sign of the press release, or is it like the one that was coming out in mid-June that never appeared?

  34. Mark July 2, 2009 at 2:46 pm -

This is frustrating to say the least!
I’m pretty sure I had read a while back, that the whole Freeview / extra FTA content concept, was to deter the uptake of subscription TV.
By waving the promise of additional channels under our noses, and then taking it away at the 11th hour…not once but twice too I might add, it seems almost worth paying for Austar/SelecTV just to stick it to the idiots that run the networks down here.

  35. David Knox July 2, 2009 at 1:42 pm -

    Ouch.

  36. Dougal Longfoot July 2, 2009 at 1:38 pm -

And congratulations to the salesperson at Harvey Norman in Tamworth who convinced my uncle (who went in specifically to purchase a HD STB) that he would be able to get One on SD. Must have had some units he really needed to shift.

  37. mac July 2, 2009 at 12:58 pm -

@ Russell, Tasmania is actually one of australia most densely populated states, due to its small land area.

  38. Russell July 2, 2009 at 4:55 am -

    @ Andrew Clarke.

Commercial reality of living in a thinly populated state.

  39. Andrew Clarke July 2, 2009 at 12:54 am -

Why does Tassie have to fight for every extra channel we get here?

  40. Danny Wu July 2, 2009 at 12:19 am -

This is why I so hate living in Tassie.

But SC does provide Live ad break free AFL coverage.

I think a lot of people in Tassie won’t be able to watch ONE because most of them have only the standard digital channel!

  41. Pete July 1, 2009 at 11:50 pm -

    @Micheal

AFL in HD, Live F1 and Qualy, FTA boxing fight nights, live American sports like NBA, NFL, live Golf majors, an array of Motorsport, etc.

I could list more if you want. But you are just a cynic so you wouldn’t care anyway.

  42. effdee July 1, 2009 at 11:38 pm -

Couldn’t give a damn if it never gets here!
    It’s only more bloody sport!

  43. Michael July 1, 2009 at 11:09 pm -

    Poker stars of poker
    Sports tonight late
    ominisport
    K1 fast driver
    netball
    netball
    i fish
    xtreame paintball
    beyond the paint

sounds like such a great line up

  44. Dylan July 1, 2009 at 10:28 pm -

    @ Michael

So what your saying is that if you don’t like sport, you probably wont like ONEHD, a sports channel?? Brilliant work. :)

  45. Ray July 1, 2009 at 9:43 pm -

Don’t we all love a ridiculous load of…. faeces? Unforeseen circumstances, yeah right.

  46. Michael July 1, 2009 at 9:22 pm -

Dylan. you love your sport and thats great, so you may enjoy one hd, as i said if you really really like sport, otherwise its crap

  47. Max July 1, 2009 at 8:53 pm -

@ barrett – what exactly do WIN and Prime fail at? They screen 9HD and 7HD into their markets, the only thing that comes to mind is Prime’s poor excuse for Regional News in some of their markets. Aside from that, they’re the same as Nine and Seven, with different logos.

I’ve never been a huge fan of sports – NRL is the only sport i regularly watch, and I get into the Aus Open Tennis and World Cup Soccer, and the Olympics. That said I am looking forward to One HD starting here in Canberra tomorrow night. More choice is always good, and there appears to be a fairly diverse schedule. And I am so there for Slamball, that just sounds like a lot of fun.

  48. Dylan July 1, 2009 at 8:41 pm -

    @ Michael.

I do love my sport and so do many other people which is why we’re so angry about missing out. I missed my team win it’s first NBA Final ever last month. And the way it’s going with TDT and their incompetence I’m crossing my fingers it will have begun by next NBA season (October).

And then there is, AFL in HD and replays, surfing, golf, the IPL, triathlons and the NFL.

    Sounds like a sensational channel.

  49. Tony July 1, 2009 at 7:48 pm -

Well we wait longer for this One HD to arrive. Sick of waiting here.

  50. Craig July 1, 2009 at 7:32 pm -

This is yet another reason why FTA channels should be on Austar for those in remote and regional areas. And the government should mandate it!

  51. Michael July 1, 2009 at 7:14 pm -

    Slam.. what.. basketball?
    Need i say more.

  52. Paull July 1, 2009 at 7:08 pm -

@Michael: I beg to differ, I’ve never been too much into sports, but have found quite a few things I like on One HD, the top of the list would have to be Slam ball, basketball with trampolines, a classic sport.

  53. Andrew Clarke July 1, 2009 at 7:00 pm -

Now do we have to wait till end of the year I knew it would not happen on July2!

  54. Michael July 1, 2009 at 6:54 pm -

unless you really really love your sport, One HD is really really crap, your not missing much.

  55. Brian from Tassie July 1, 2009 at 6:42 pm -

    @Gary

Surely if you had a fair few people rock up to TDT headquarters (48 New Town Rd, New Town) and demanded something you might get answer from them.

As long as TDT isn’t getting much attention from The Mercury(southern Tasmanias paper) they will keep delaying.

  56. barrett July 1, 2009 at 6:31 pm -

Regional TV in Australia = joke

Austar,WIN,Prime and SC are all failures at delivering the same service as capital cities service providers.

  57. Gary Tew July 1, 2009 at 6:28 pm -

TDT advertised before Christmas that ONE HD was coming early in 2009 to Tasmanian viewers. Its now July and negotiations are still going on. The ridiculous thing is there has been no announcement at any stage from TDT refuting claims that it was coming on March 26th or again with the rest of the regionals on July 2nd.

Its been in the newspapers here saying it was coming after Govt. Ministers contacted Southern Cross. Its been discussed on talkback radio and still TDT management have remained quiet. I cant believe their incompentance!

  58. MichaelQ July 1, 2009 at 6:27 pm -

Any word on Mildura? Was a report in the local paper that WIN were holding things up.

  59. Brian from Tassie July 1, 2009 at 6:06 pm -

    oh your joking

how come scten didnt have any problems negotiating and TDT did?

  60. damo July 1, 2009 at 5:35 pm -

i thought that it being on foxtel sd. it would be on optus sd. because they are the same. it hasnt come on mine yet

  61. David Knox July 1, 2009 at 5:31 pm -

No, sorry. Darwin was not in the pipeline at the moment as far as I am aware.

  62. Dylan July 1, 2009 at 5:26 pm -

    *sigh* Why aren’t I surprised?

  63. Sam July 1, 2009 at 5:07 pm -

    Any info on Darwin?
