Random acts of oversights

A woman says her animal rescue's makeover by Nine doesn't comply with local regulations, and she can't afford to fix it.

random_actsAn episode of Nine’s Random Acts of Kindness has created headaches for the owner of a Woodend animal rescue shelter, after a renovation made on the show failed to comply with Victoria’s animal practices code.

“As soon as I walked in and saw what the program had done, I knew we were in trouble in terms of failing to meet Department of Primary Industry guidelines governing the running of an animal shelter,” said proprietor Trish Burke.

Burke had been sent on a surprise trip while the work was carried out in secret in her absence. But new cat cages and sewage works that do not comply with state guidelines.

Ms Burke agreed the shelter also failed to comply on the grounds of staff training, record keeping and dealing with waste water.

Now she says she can’t afford to now bring her shelter up to strict industry standards. Major changes could cost tens of thousands dollars.

“What was meant to have been a random act of kindness has turned into heartache and heartbreak for me and all the shelter volunteers,” Ms Burke told news.com.au

Curiously, the shelter attracted the attention of the Macedon Ranges Shire and the Department of Primary Industries following complaints by a disgruntled former employee.

Nine’s show isn’t the first this year to be flouting municipal regulations for the sake of entertainment. Earlier this year TEN’s Guerrilla Gardeners attracted criticism from local councils for some of its renegade renovations of rundown sites.

Random Acts of Kindness
is produced and made by Cornerbox in Sydney and broadcast by Nine.

  1. I have good friends that do a homeless ministry in ipswich. Ron and Narel have dedicated their last 4 years to the homeless, needy and the unwanted people of ipswich. They started their min istry to the poor with no money or support but chose to walk in faith and start a ministry called foot prints in the park. Ron has trained leaders and helped many people get on thier feet. He has given back people hope and counted his cost of his own life to make sure he walks in what he beleives in. Ron has also been on Thialand trips and helped bless many people with his time and very little money he has.

Ron is someone who has flown under the raidar and is a guy I would love to see put forward for your program. He has open eyes to many and keeps a real out look on life with a heart to make a difference.

Foot Prints in the Park is a blessing to many and up to 50 people a night can come and eat at the BBQ which is free. ron spends many days and nights with the people who need encouragement and a vision.

Ron is a man I put forward for your program. Many thaks Rob Purser

  2. For goodness sake! I have seen both before and after and all they did was tidy up a mess! The owner of the business, Trish, needs to start taking responsibility for her own actions.

  3. Trish does an incredible job on a shoestring budget trying to save animals and find them good homes. Surely the producers of the show and Channel 9 have a moral obligation to fix what they have broken.

  4. So wait, the shelter already failed to comply with regulations in certain areas, and the show only made it worse? Because it seems the proprietor is trying to focus all the blame on to the show.

Still, you think the show would have taken more care with a project subject to outside scrutiny. That’s what researchers are for.

  5. LOL

Thats what Nine get for creating such a cheap grab for ratings. Thier Random Act of Kindless is no match for their Complete Act of Incompetance.
