ACA lands ‘Kyle prank’ interview

Tracy Grimshaw will interview family members at the centre of the "Kyle & Jackie O" radio prank, while ACMA announces a radio investigation.

A Current Affair will tonight feature family members at the centre of the “Kyle & Jackie O” radio prank.

The incident, in which a 14 year old girl admitted she had been raped live on air sent the radio industry into meltdown. It also led to Kyle Sandilands being dumped from Australian Idol, cited as no longer fitting the show’s “family-friendly” image.

Nine isn’t revealing much detail of its interview tonight other than to acknowledge Tracy Grimshaw will be speaking to family members.

Meanwhile the Australian Communications and Media Authority has today announced an investigation into practices for radio pranks which it claims may “not be keeping pace with industry practice and community standards.” It will look at what safeguards are in place for participants.

ACMA is calling for submissions from the public and the industry into commercial radio practices until September 30. The investigation is separate from any specific investigation into the Kyle and Jackie O Show.

Austereo is yet to confirm a return date for its controversial pair.

  1. having just seen the ACA interview, this whole thing amazes me.

    but as shocking as the incident is, I amazed by Tracy Grimshaw, that was awful journalism.

  2. This ‘interview’ and Princess Tracies glowing insincerity / general demeanour were enough to make me barf up my dinner.

    I hope Media Watch rips her to shreds.

  3. The last ounce of respect I had for Tracy (NOT aca) went out the window after seeing this “interview” wrong call Tracy. Just a grubby stunt of your own for that almighty ratings glory. And you got it last night. But you’ve completely lost me- for good. Goodbye Tracy, thanks for the memories. When you finish up at the joke that is ACA -and you know it-, might give you another chance when your hosting/presenting something that at least is half respectable. Not the gutter quality ACA.

  5. As I’ve said before, Tracey Grimshaw is nothing more than a TV prostitute these days in her quest for ratings and to keep her fat salary. She will present any trash and exploit others without any regard for the good taste, community values and decency.

    I lost respect for her journalistic skills years ago.

  6. I must say I was disappointed with this interview. Talking to “aunts” immediately raises doubts over whether they have an agenda.

    Suggestions that the girl had distorted the truth really only puts her unnecessarily back in the spotlight, and takes us away from the point that the segment should never been allowed to have gotten to that point in the first place. You simply don’t run a radio prank live to air where you start going down the road of asking a child about their sex life. Whether it’s truth or otherwise is actually immaterial to this. If ACA wanted to bring the attention back to good parenting it was unhelpful to do so with other members of the family who, for all we know, may have fallen out.

  7. This still does not make any difference, given that the dumb and dumber radio show went on air with a minor and allowed her to be quizzed about her personal life.

    Of course Sandilands and O will never see the error in what they enabled. Nor will they see any of their other “pranks” and oh so funny (see humiliating and exploitive) segments as over stepping the mark.

    ACA, TT and them. Maybe they should all do a show together.

I hate to sound skeptical and suspicious but I am left wondering…… Why would a mother ask her own child a question about sexually activity when her child was raped Forgive me, if I am wrong, but I find it all a little wierd and added into this equation is the fact the daughter calls off police investigation Why are we are all believing this child was raped ?? What if this was all a stunt that went horribly wrong Many have done stranger things for 5 minutes of glory I am really not buying this whole situation I think this may have been a stunt for a payout I just can’t believe a mum would ask her child such a question knowing her history This story just doesn’t add up!!!

  14. The only thing they left out of this crass coverage is that Michael Jackson donated the sperm to the mother, the sister, the other sister, the grandmother, the lesbian, the wayward cousin, the sober daughter, the drunk daughter. the pet dog and the girl asleep on the top bunk.

    I’m sick of all of it. Kyle & Jackie O have been attacked as a ratings grab by media all over the place, and I think whilst they should have been pulled up by management all of it’s been over the top. Everyone I speak to can’t believe the media is going on and on with such crap.

    Should Kyle be off Idol for this? No. The Idol editors are far more insulting to people than Kyle could ever be (they’re just plain rude).

    So why are the media pandering to the conservatives? Why is it that everyone I talk to (unless they didn’t like Kyle & Jackie O to begin with) think it’s been blown out of proportion? When will the media put forward the perspective of everyone that thinks this has just gone too far?

    The fact ACA has aired this show to jump in on something like this is just poor journalism, plain and simple.

    As I said, I’m sick of it. And done with it to. Bring back Kyle & Jackie O, at least while I didn’t agree with everything they said, they at least said it.

  20. haha, did you see Today tonight’s story, where they were condemning channel 9 for interviewing the mother and daughter, when in fact it was the aunties that were being interviewed.

  21. OMG How boring was this story and how misleading were the bloody promos for it. The aunties are you kidding me!

    I consider myslef a pretty bright person but I was confused for the first few minutes trying to figure out who the hell these people were. I thought finally we would get the story straight from the people involved and was left with people i don’t care about with a bunch of here say crap basically saying the young girl was a liar.

    Shame on you Tracy, that was a cheap ratings grab at a time where a serious look at the issue would have been useful.

    ACA tried to make the point that sex with a 12 year old is wrong no matter what but I fear what people will take away from this hack interview is the impression that the girl was a liar.

    Not sure how this helped a vulnerable and obviously troubled young girl. Truly bad.
