Cameras roll on Underbelly

By David Knox on August 23, 2009 / Filed Under News 21

underbelly2Underbelly begins filming its third series in Sydney tomorrow.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile is centered on Kings Cross beginning around 1989 and will feature “the excesses of the empire, the collapse of the empire, the chaos that followed, and the ultimate victory of strong and honest police…seen through the eyes of some of the most sexy, charming, corrupt and deadly people of the time,”

As well as ‘bent cops’ it is dotted with strippers, gamblers, gunmen, dealers, bouncers and bagmen.

The characters feature policewoman and former prostitute Kim Hollingsworth, teenage Kings Cross identity Johnny Ibrahim, the Bayeh Brothers, Trevor Haken, and Chook Fowler.

Several cast members were revealed today in the Sunday Telegraph.

Peter O’Brien will resume his role as George Freeman.

Emma Booth (Clubland, 3 Acts of Murder, The Circuit) will play Hollingsworth.

“We are absolutely delighted with Emma coming on board,” Screentime’s Des Monaghan said. “She will start filming in the coming weeks and it’s a great role, a very tough role.”

John Ibrahim will be played by newcomer Firass Dirani.

Diarmid Heidenreich, better known as Pizza Hut’s delivery boy “Douggie”, also has a role. Heidenreich has recently played roles in The Cut and Packed to the Rafters.

Underbelly is expected to air on Nine in 2010.

What? He was in Neighbours yes. But he’s done much better stuff, including Queer as Folk, The Bill and White Collar Blue and an upcoming role in Doctor Who.

I always got the impression they rushed into season two too quickly, the then when I watched it, it showed. They never bothered to figure out enough plot points for the number of episodes and it made the whole thing rather pointless.

Rushing into this season so quickly will only lead to the same problems. Maybe it’s just a sign of how desperate Nine is for viewers and another example of no respect for their viewers.

I won’t be watching. I missed UB1 but made sure I watched UB2 mainly for the cast. I was really bored with it but kept watching in case something good happened. It didn’t.

A quick glance at the picture in this story and I thought I was staring at the (kfc) colonel.

Does anybody know if Peter O’Brien is still going to play Peter Brock in a movie?

There is mention of one called ‘King of the Mountain’ but it looks like the production has tanked. That would be a sad thing for bogans Australia-wide.

At least they have UB3 to tide them over.

What page of the sunday telegraph was the article on?

Season 1 was brilliant, a one of a kind, a once-in-a-decade type series which we’ll remember for years to come.

I know why the are milking it, but honestly, I sure as f* won’t be watching it, same as with “series 2″.

I’m guessing 2.5 million idiots will believe Nine’s own hype and watch this as well even if it is crap, which the first 2 series were. I watched Blue Murder the other week for the first time to see what everyone was talking about. Yes that was much better, far better acting and better script than the embarrassing Underbelly. Shame the TV industry awarded Underbelly all those awards because now people think that’s the best our industry can come up with.

Or, Underbelly :- Bert v Ramsay with Two and Half Tracey’s…………….

  14. steven guy August 23, 2009 at 1:50 pm -

Hey 9, heres an idea, how about making a drama that isn’t about good guys & bad guys. I am so over cop @#**ing shows. What next, Underbelly :- the empire strikes back, or even Underbelly :- the channel 9 story. PMLOL !

Firass Dirani is a very under rated actor, his work in The Combination was fantastic, this could be a huge breakout role for him.

Looks like another winner, can’t wait for UB3.

Diarmid Heidenreich, thats a name that I havn’t heard in a long while. I do remember him being one of the best things in a failed 90s soap. I think it was Echo Point. It’s good that Underbelly is carrying on it’s tradition of bringing back long forgotten soapie stars and reinvigorating their careers.

Please no more the first series was outstanding , one of the best aussie shows in years season 2 was s**t and i can only imagine the people behind this are trying to cash in on the popularity of season one please dont ruin the third series like you ruined the second

  18. gerry August 23, 2009 at 9:56 am -

Yey! It sounds so good. No doubt it’ll rate through the roof.

  19. Jerome August 23, 2009 at 9:38 am -

since it’s an earlier easter next year 9 should push underbelly3 to after easter non-ratings to avoid that 400k dropoff they had this year when season 2 took a 2 week break.

i wonder if this season will rate the same way as last season did?

North Shore Times indicates that filming of some stuff starts in Lane Cove in September – and they are “encouraging” people to go and see the filming.

I haven’t even watch UB2 yet and I notice that unlike the original the DVDs are easy to find, I guess just like any network Nine will suck on UB until it dies…

Major problem with UB is it has little re-run appeal, but I’m amazed it has not made an appearance on GO! yet…
