David Reyne quits 9AM

After 4 years, David Reyne will exit 9AM at the end of the year, leaving TEN to review the show's future prospects.

9amDavid Reyne, co-host of 9AM with David and Kim, has announced he is quitting the show at the end of the year.

“After 4 years of hosting 9AM I have decided to hand in my notice to Network TEN,” he said in a statement. “Over almost 1,800 hours of the program I’ve run with the whole gamut of topics from global warming, the GFC, celebrity gossip to choosing the right vase for your Mother’s Day flowers and reading tea leaves. It’s been truly exhilarating, occasionally excruciating and utterly exhausting.

“I know it’s customary at a time like this for the exiting host to say something gratuitous about their employer – but I truly mean it when I say that it’s been a great delight for me to have worked with the magnificent team of people at Network TEN. I’m very grateful for their support over the past 4 years.”

Reyne did not indicate any immediate prospects that may have swayed his decision.

“For the time being I’m just looking forward to a long lie down over summer while thinking about what 2010 may hold in store for me.”

TEN programmer David Mott indicated he was reviewing all elements of 9AM in coming months. Recently he told TV Tonight the show didn’t enjoy a good lead-in with TEN’s children’s shows competing against Sunrise and Today at 9AM‘s expense.

Yesterday the show rated 56,000 viewers nationally against The Morning Show‘s 210,000 and Kerri-Anne Kennerley’s 139,000.

9AM was a brand new venture back in 2006 and David’s good humour and skill have been fundamental in establishing the loyal audience base we enjoy now,” Mott said today.

“We have appreciated and enjoyed working with David over the last 4 years.

“We will miss him and wish him well.”

  1. They say it is more serious than the other 2 shows, but i disagree. I think it was the funniest show on tv. David’s placebo moment was one of the funniest things i have seen as well as his many facial expressions when he was in the background were hilarious. The man just didn’t have a clue. Joking aside i truly am amazed it is still on the air must be cheap to make.

  2. Love the show and the banter between Big Dave & Kim. Its refreshing to watch a show that is informative and entertaining. Good luck David and keep smiling Kim.
You were always in my lounge room at 9am.

  3. While I didn’t watch it that much, 9am is 10 times better than the other networks in terms of content, in my opinion. It talked about stuff that was ‘serious’ compared to the utter crap shown on 7 and 9’s poor excuse for a morning show …

  4. No doubt 9am is the better show of the 3.Kerri Anne flicks the head way too much (a bit of a chip on the shoulder i think),Kylie looks like she would rather be anywhere but next to the sexist Larry (how do they get away with their derogatory female comments) and far too much info /celeb crap. There’s no reason why Kim cannot hold the show together herself. She has a very comfortable style & is most pleasant to listen to.
Look up arrogant in the dictionary & you’ll find a picture of Reyne.
Kim will be glad to be rid of him,for sure.
I recall his very first opening lines on the first show was something like “I’m in a very bad mood today…….”From the Clive Robertson school of nobs.
    Go Kim!

  5. yes all channels 7-9-10, seem to be copy cats of each other, not just the morning slot , over the whole day and night, ido not understand why this is done, in most cases the news included they all show the same segment, story, breaking news at the same exact time. surely the 3 programmers of these channels must get together and discuss their format timing. p.s. to all stations please show more movies

  6. God, I hope they don’t bring back Moonface. He is so full of his own self importance. DR was great, said it like it was. No namby-pamby. I only watched 9am,the others are just so saccharine sweet.

  7. David was the surliest man on morning televison.
And what a refreshing thing that was.

People who bag him and say he is not politically correct deserve the faux sugar-coated, love fest that is endemic to other shows such as Sunrise.

I also reackon there was some sexual tension between the David and Kim.

  8. His occasional homophobic comments, irratic, incoherent, often redundent and all around unprofessional interview style and general short-sightedness about most issues made him pretty unlikeable.

  9. His cynical style probably scared some viewers away who clearly preferred the inane but much more genial Larry, Kylie and Kerri-Anne. I wonder what they’re going to do to change the show now?

  10. Who’s Mel?
I think this is a good opportunity to have something else on in the mornings – 3 shows of the same genre at the same time is just silly.
