FlashForward “has ‘hit’ written all over it.”

Over in North America, they're getting very excited about ABC's new scifi drama, which media will see here soon.

flashforward_1In the new acquisitions coming from the US, Seven is most excited about the ABC scifi FlashForward.

Based on a novel by Canadian writer Robert J. Sawyer, it has been co-written and directed by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins,The Dark Knight, Ghost Rider).

The show has already had on air teasers from Seven. It doesn’t air in the US until September 24th, but to get everybody talking, Seven will unveil the drama to media in a special cinema screening in the next two weeks.

In Canada they’re already pumped. One journo had plenty to say about the show in a bigger article on the goodies in the new Fall season:

That brings us to the excellent Flash Forward. It’s ABC’s new Lost. Because Lost cannot meander forever and is entering its last season, a new and complicated mystery-driven drama is necessary to replace it. Flash Forward, based (loosely, it turns out) on Canadian Robert Sawyer’s novel of the same title, is Lost with lots of cop-action. In the spectacular but somewhat soapy pilot, we are presented with a grave and puzzling scenario.

Set in Los Angeles, the show gives us cop Mark (Joseph Fiennes), a recovering alcoholic who lives with his surgeon wife Olivia (Sonya Walger), and their daughter. While Mark is chasing suspects and Olivia is operating on a patient, the world stops. Literally, it stops. Everybody on Earth loses consciousness for two minutes and, in that two-minute period, gets a glimpse of their life on April 29 the following year. What happened and who’s responsible? What does it all mean? You get the picture – loads of scope for fleeting glimpses of the future and many hints of an entire world in danger.

Presented here with much fanfare, Flash Forward is, well, flashy and gripping. The producers talked with glee about their long-term plans for the show. As well they might: The drama has hit written all over it.

  1. I hope they don’t put it on late like they do Lost. Lost is wonderful and they have it on so late. How can it build an audience? This show looks like it deserves a chance so hopefully it will be on at a reasonable hour.

  2. Definitely looks promising.

One thing this show has going for it from the very beginning (which Lost didn’t have for it’s first couple seasons), is direction and a clear end date. Apparently it is set to have 3 – 4 seasons, assuming it isn’t a flop that is.

  3. I don’t care when it’s on. 8:30, 10:30, 2 am, whatever, as long as it’s on free to air I’ll be happy.
With a pvr I don’t watch much live tv anyway.

  4. I’d say it has critical hit written all over it but it’ll bomb ratings wise especially here where sci-fi never works

Seems like an interesting concept but then so did Journeyman and look what happened to that. I’ll certainly give it a go before it inevitably flops and Seven either move it to 11.30 or axe it altogether.

  5. Guy, my prediction is sunday, bones/DWTS finishes right on time, it’s close to the US airnight. and it’s a high rating night and the competition does not look like it will be very strong. unfortunatley, because it’s on thursday in the US it can’t be fasttracked within 24 hours like other shows.

  6. There are rumours around that this will be coming to Thursdays but if this were to happen then it would mean we would have to be a week after the US. Still thats a good thing but i actually hope that it comes to Sunday or Wednesday night. Thursday night is a good night for it because Lost had a very very successful start on that night but this is one of the big ones of 2009 and surely Seven wouldnt place it on Thursday, the lowest night of the week ratings wise (Sun-Thurs).

It looks awesome though. I dont think it will be as sci-fi as people think. Sure it will have the element in the show but there will be a lot of great drama in this. Cant wait!

  7. i actually saw an ad for this in a cinema the other day and until the very end when I saw the 7 logo thought it was a trailer for an upcoming movie…looks really good…cant wait..

  8. My bet is Seven will eventually push it back to midnight like they did with lost Season 5 (which happened to be the best season yet).

I’m also worried that even though it will be fast tracked Seven will bombard it with loads of commercial breaks.

  9. Sounds awesome, but like all great shows, let’s expect to see it’s 3rd or 4th season at 11.30pm on 7 in a couple of year’s time! Hopefully 7 will fasttrack it within days of the US screening to avoid viewers obtaining it via other means.

  10. It may have Hit written all over it but every show is a risk and we know how well scifi does in this country, Lost started out good but look where it is now, stuck late night on Seven.

This new show looks interesting and I hope it works but there is so much more coming this year it could be a tough fight.

  11. This is the only new show from the upcoming US fall season that is remotely interesting to me. The problem with all these serial shows is the writers begin to stretch it out and the quality suffers horrendously (Heroes, Lost, Prison Break, etc), and creativity takes a back seat to repetitive plots. Audiences feel the same way when powerhouses like these shows were rating 2 million viewers three years ago and are now being used as midnight filler. This show may go the same way but hopefully it has a good season or two in it before that happens.
