Idol reviewing Kyle Sandilands

Updated: 2DAY FM suspends Kyle & Jackie O show for review while TEN reconsiders his role as an Idol judge.

ksFollowing an outrageous and misfired radio stunt last week, TEN is said to be reconsidering Kyle Sandilands’ role with Australian Idol.

“There’s no answer on his future yet … Meetings have been taking place and will continue to do so early next week,” a network spokesperson told news.com.au

“But we’re taking this really seriously.”

The networks is said to be under pressure from Idol‘s rights holder in the UK, 19 Entertainment, which is concerned about preserving the show’s family appeal.

This week the Idol judges embark on early publicity events with media around the country. If Sandilands is to be extricated from the show, FremantleMedia will need to clarify his role swiftly.

Sandilands, who has apologised for the stunt, has already filmed the audition tour for the show, but could be replaced before the live Sunday shows get underway. Delta Goodrem is also a guest judge on the audition tour.

The Sunday Telegraph reports a public announcement is expected to be made on Tuesday.

UPDATED Sun 7:30pm: Kyle Sandilands’ management has advised Austereo that he is unable to perform his duties on-air at this time.

Austereo is to suspend the Kyle & Jackie O Show until it has completed a network review, which commenced last Wednesday.

The Australian also speculates Sandilands is on the list for Celebrity MasterChef.

  1. Daniel, Its the remark that this moron made after the young girls admission thats the problem.
Also, why did the producers allow it to air?
Don’t they have a delay time where they could stop the comments going to air?
And yes, the girls mother is also very much to blame.

So it seems there are 3 people who are accountable.

The mother for being so stupid asking those questions on air.
Kyle for his comment after the girls admission.
Producers for not hitting the delay button and allowing it to go to air.

  2. Vile Kyle is a very third-class “wannabe” music “expert. Should not be on Idol. Re the stunt, he had 7-seconds (or should have had if the program was on delay as it is required to be) and should have never allowed a question from the “mother” about her 14 y/o’s sex life go to air, especially when the chilld said “im scared, this is unfair”. Vile Kyle should have stopped it right there.
No Kyle and I’ll watch Idol.

  3. “Sandilands, who has apologised for the stunt”

has he? From all that I’ve read I don’t think he’s apologised at all. That statement that he (or his PR person) wrote on that Punch website is certainly no apology

  4. Has the worst taste in music you could possibly imagine and I certainly won’t miss him but I reckon he’ll stay.

If they do axe him then I’d like to see Mark back though not sure if he’d want to come back. Would be great to have the original three judges back together again.

  5. Umm, not Kyle’s fault? Kyle had a 14 year old take a lie detector and ask about her sexual experiences (which, notably, if any consensual experiences had occurred it is still rape what people call “statutory rape”).

His hands were never clean coming into this, let alone his comments afterward.

  6. I so hope 10 dump Sandilands..I don’t watch the show because just looking at him makes me feel sick.He looks and acts like a bully, who relishes that role.Obviusly 10 thought Australian Idol would be popular because of the cross promotion of Sandilands radio show and Australian Idol..they obviously thought this would increase the ratings.SandilanS..People may not like Cowell , but often his opinion is respected.
My gut feeling is that 10 are only doing the review of Sandilands role in an attempt to tell the public that they are at least concerned about his stupid comments..but alas it will just be smoke and mirrors and he will continue in the role

  7. All these people calling for him to be sacked from Idol and sacked from 2DAY are jumping on the ‘outrage’ bandwagon.

Lets just get a few things straight – What he broadcast on his show didn’t breach any broadcasting laws (regardless the ACMA or whoever it would be reported to are powerless to do anything anyway)

What he does on his radio show really has nothing to do with what happens on Idol.

If 2Day FM even tried to sack him (Specifically for this incident), he could launch one of the biggest legal actions against them and clean up with a mulitmillion dollar settlement.

So if thats what you want, keep ‘being outraged’ and ‘calling for him to be sacked’ he must be shaking in his boots :p

  8. I still don’t see how this can even be considered a ‘radio stunt’ and why it has fallen on Kyle Sandilands when it’s clearly obvious the girl’s mother is to blame.

Kyle is perfect for Australian Idol and it would be a real shame to lose him. I can’t see them finding a replacement in time, do you see Mark Holden jumping up to take his place?

  9. I’m appalled that he even got a TV gig in the first place. He knows f— all about music (among other things), and acts as if people actually care what he thinks. Hah! I recall there being an incident on Kyle’s first season on Idol, and I believe he said that one of the auditionees either was, or looked like, a “slut”. Think what you will of that, but this hasn’t been the first, nor will it be the last time that he’s conducted himself in a grossly unprofessional manner.

Dumping him could only do Idol some good.

  10. The producers should never have let this go to air. Children and live radio, talking about sex. Alarm bells should have rung. Perhaps they thought it would be OK because the mum was there?

Unfortunately in the cut and thrust of ratings battles, people get carried away and don’t realise the impact they could be having on people.

Sandilands’ follow up question on the segment, and his behaviour in the public domain since, show his complete lack of empathy and understanding of a really sensitive issue.

As a side note, I think we’re all sick of tv and radio bullies. Shows like masterchef became great family viewing because of family appeal and no bully judges. Sure, people still get it wrong, but they are encouraged to do better next time etc.

  11. If Channel 10 dump Kyle I will actually watch Australian Idol again. Oh, I can put up with Paula & Randy over on American Idol, but Kyle is the reason I don’t want the Australian version. It has nothing to do with poorly thought out radio stunts, it just has to do with him being a massive tool.

  12. um, Shane, the bad joke was a 14 year old child being strapped to a lie detector and asked questions about whether she is sexually active, the girl said before the “interview” began “im scared, this is unfair”..it should have stopped at that point. Serious questions needs to be asked of the girls mother but neither Kyle, Jackie O or their publicity hungry producers should have allowed this to proceed, as far as im aware, sex under the age of 16 is unlawful and shouldnt have been getting discussed on breakfast radio at all, much less while the girl involved was hooked up to a polygraph. Clearly these two talentless morons rate well for 2day FM so they arent about to discipline them, im not a huge fan of Idol but that brand is much bigger than Kyle and frankly they would be far better off without him involved, the shows two best seasons (ratings wise) were series 1 & 2, before Kyle joined the judging panel. I really hope that TEN and Idols producers send a message loud and clear that what happened last week was so, so unacceptable and should never ben allowed to happen again.

  13. He was brought in to be controversial – so Ten shouldn’t be surprised when he is controversial (even be it when he’s not on Idol).

Who could they replace him with? Tina Arena and Darren Hayes did a great job in the London auditions a few years back – either of them would be a good choice.

  14. Please tell me this is a bad joke.

Full respect to the 14yo girl & sad to hear what happened to her, but far out, how on earth is this reflecting badly on Kyle?

This radio “stunt” was no such thing – they’ve been doing this segment for years & everyone found it entertaining (or not & switched stations) but there was no way they could have known about this beforehand.

Personally I think they handled it as well as they could once the incident occurred, pulling it off air once the mother forced her child to answer a question she obviously knew the answer to.

Mistakes happen to anyone even with the best of intentions.

I suggest everyone who are up in arms about this pull their heads in and refocus their rage at the person truly responsible for being in this situation, the supposedly concerned & loving mother.

Move on, there’s nothing to see here. I’m no Kyle & Jackie O fan, whilst I do listen to the show on occasion. If Kyle is off Idol for this I won’t be watching Idol.

    Regards,
    Shane.

“”TEN is said to be reconsidering Kyle Sandilands’ role with Australian Idol””
Yeah Yeah Yeah ! Do Ch Ten really expect us to believe this ?

The only good thing about last years Idol was that the best singer (Wes) actually won !!

  16. If you get rid of Kyle your ratings will go down. And soon everyone going to forget about that ‘incident’ anyway. So i see no point.
