PLUS7 or 7PLUS?

By David Knox on August 13, 2009 / Filed Under News 91

sevenlogoPLUS7, 7PLUS, or even 7TWO?

Seven’s new digital channel appears to be inching closer.

Last Friday Seven lodged new trademark names with IP Australia, raising speculation that its new channel is on the way.

That’s where the name of GO! appeared when it was first leaked by TV Tonight.

Seven is now the only Free to Air broadcaster not to have added a new digital channel to the Freeview suite of channels. The network has previously indicated has settled on its market, but even execs at Nine and TEN are still guessing as to which way Seven will move.

Guess they decided against 7ELEVEN…

So let’s have some feedback. Which name do you prefer?

7PLUS sounds way better than 7TWO or PLUS7 and seeing all these comments, we all don’t want time-shifted. I actually hope this can be a channel where the 10:30 and 11:00pm bumped shows like Heroes, 24 and Lost will air in decent primetime slots. Also, still remembering their annual New Years package, they have a lot of shows still to air and if Seven is full, to put the shows here because general entertainment would challenge GO! and clear up their sched. Also, shows such as Ugly Betty which haven’t warranted numbers over 1 million and Family Guy should be in good timeslots for the future channel. And for everyone else, why not some classics in the daytime and movies at night – it would be a channel to beat GO! and ONEHD.

  2. Curtis August 14, 2009 at 6:35 pm -

7 +plus is fine by me. I truly hope that the channel will the general entertainment and incorporate:

**Crawfords Australia programming – eg. Homicide, Cop Shop, Division 4, Holiday Island, (probably not ‘The Sullivans’ and ‘Division 4′ as they were Nine’s), Skyways, Solo One, Young Ramsay and Matlock Police
**Grundys material eg. old Seven game shows (eg New Price is Right, Family Feud) and series (eg. Bellamy, Sons and Daughters, Class of 74) etc

Apart from WIN, the major networks have shown little interest in Crawford Classics.

  3. David S. August 14, 2009 at 6:03 pm -

7Teen – That way everyone will know who it’s aimed at and not expect more than the endless repeats of dreadful sitcoms, mindless reality shows and moronic music VJs it will mostly be showing.

If GO! is what Nine think 14-39 year-olds want to watch I shudder to think how Seven will treat them.

  4. Eli August 14, 2009 at 5:00 pm -

Redroom will be their Internet On-Demand service, showing all their recently screened programming and new previews. This is set to tie in with Yahoo! and whatnot.
As for the channel name, it could be anything, but it doesn’t matter as long as the programming is okay.

For the Red/room logo, click ELI

  5. Chris August 14, 2009 at 3:50 pm -

    LOL @ Knowfirst

I hope this means that I can finally watch Heroes at a decent hour. Here’s a Channel 7 idea: have sunrise all day! Sunrise, the Morning Show, Lunchtime, THISafternoon…oh wait, probably better if that doesn’t happen.

As for names, I did like Red Room (Rabbit3) myself, even if it would be a little unsuitable for a channel full of Disney shows.

  6. Jerome August 14, 2009 at 3:17 pm -

…. i would call it: ME!73 (on ch73) and leave 72 open for a 3rd general ent. channel if they are ever allowed.

  7. Paull August 14, 2009 at 3:09 pm -

My preference is Docos channel that is simulcast on 7HD, although the name 7PLUS doesn’t exactly point in that direction.

A lifestyle channel would be boring, although I have enjoyed watching the occasional 7HD repeat of TGO

  8. Jerome August 14, 2009 at 2:52 pm -

i think lifestyle would be good for 7. it is advertiser friendly because it does very well in the GB demographic which has been growing and might be the most demanded demo soon. and on foxtel the lifestyle channels are usually one of the tops.
and the shows are usually very cheap, leckie has said he is not going to do anything high budget.

and if the 7HD shows are a hint (they were with 9/GO!), look at it. the great outdoors repeats, harry’s practice repeats, new idea tv repeats, BH&G repeats, and all those other ones like room for improvement, auction squad, hot property have all had their run on 7HD.

i don’t think 7 have the content to do a GO! type channel. 9 had heaps of good shows that they had been sitting on that had collected over the years so it was an obvious choice for 9. wheras 7 tend to use all their shows right till the end, even if they are axed in the US and always have a quite bare cupboard.

  9. Glenn August 14, 2009 at 2:52 pm -

I dont really care as long as they don’t fill it with eps of TV Burp and Double Take – how bad was that last night? Do TV owners watch their own shows??

  10. Russell August 14, 2009 at 2:24 pm -

David why not do a poll where people can vote on the name and send the results in to Seven! People on this site have great ideas. Would be a good way to make sure Seven don’t give it a god-awful name!

    7Plus
    Plus7
    7Too
    Seventy7
    SevenD
    7XD
    7Extra
    RedRoom
    Factually
    24/7
    e7
    7NOW
    7Up
    Living

    etc

  11. Michael August 14, 2009 at 2:09 pm -

7NEXT that defiantly sounds time shift

  12. kevin August 14, 2009 at 2:09 pm -

    Yahoo!!!!! It’s Seven…

  13. dmc August 14, 2009 at 2:07 pm -

666 would be appropriate for this mob

  14. Michael C August 14, 2009 at 1:36 pm -

Rabbit3 is correct – Channel 7 also lodged an application for the name “redroom” on the same day, and the logo can be found on the IP Australia website.

This looks and sounds more like it will be an ‘on demand’ online service, possibly similar to ABC’s iView.

It is also worth noting that Channel 7 has an old trademark that they still own from 2002 called “7NEXT” that they have been renewing.

  15. Steve August 14, 2009 at 12:47 pm -

Why didn’t they ask one of the Sunrise cast to come up with a name?

    Seven’er
    Seven’o
    Sevenie
    Sev’s

I guess that would look a bit unprofessional…

  16. Michael August 14, 2009 at 12:45 pm -

    ATN that sounds ok
    ATN1 ATN2 its easy,
    but its not trendy
    7plus is better than plus7,
7 again if its time shift.
although i hope its not time shift

  17. Jane August 14, 2009 at 11:54 am -

    7UP is definitely the best…

    what about the classic……24/7

  18. PD August 14, 2009 at 11:53 am -

I think we’re not going to hear anything substantial from 7 until GO!’s ratings are in. Then they’ll have an idea as to whether a ‘proper’ station works or if they should find a niche audience and go after that instead.

  19. snickers August 14, 2009 at 11:46 am -

7PLUS is easily the best. PLUS7 sounds like yet another bogan family reality show or something.

  20. Paul August 14, 2009 at 11:39 am -

If that is the only 2 names they could come up with, I would be sacking my marketing department. That’s pityful.

  21. Paul August 14, 2009 at 11:20 am -

Seven could just use the new channel to run Star Trek episodes 24 hours a day, and call the channel 7 of 9.

  22. J Bar August 14, 2009 at 10:59 am -

If those are the choices then I choose 7PLUS but I agree with everyone that has said that 7PLUS and 7TWO sound like timeshift channels.

Either would cause massive confusion in the future when they decide to introduce a 7+2 channel as they have done in the UK and they already do here on Foxtel. Will they have 7PLUS+2 or 7TWO+2? Those really sounds ridiculous.

’7TOO’ on channel 72 is quite clever .
How about the old ATN (Australian Television Network) that they tried to attach to 7 a few years back. 7ATN? Maybe not trendy enough but quite patriotic and could be used to their advantage if they had more Australian content on the channel, unlike the American dominated Go!

  23. Pedro August 14, 2009 at 10:33 am -

    I’m confused… 7+7=14, not 77.

  24. Phil Jordan August 14, 2009 at 9:48 am -

Love to see a movie channel… what about 7extra

  25. Andrew B August 14, 2009 at 8:20 am -

It won’t be a time shift channel. A family entertainment channel is a good possibility, using their Disney deal for kids shows, re-playing older cahnnel 7 shows and classics, lifestyle, factuals and movies. They were going to have movie nights on 7HD when it started but that never happened.

3rd and 4th SD channels won’t happen for the commercials until analogue switches off, if at all. There’s not enough bandwidth to support them currently.

  26. Russell August 14, 2009 at 6:46 am -

    e7

    Ripped from e4 obviously.

BTW, instead of just wishing for what You would want on the channel “old horror movies please” or “alf and step by step, i loved these growing up”… how about we think of what would actually be a good business model for Seven.
Everyone grew up on and loved different shows. Just because you liked it does not mean the masses will watch old repeats or advertisers will want to advertise there.

Seven needs a channel that has wide appeal, in the right demos, with low programming costs. That is the best way to build a successful new network that rates well and delivers profits.

  27. Sean M August 14, 2009 at 3:17 am -

I think they should have general programming.

These channels could be around long term. There is no need to unneccesarily restrict yourself to one narrow genre. Tastes change. A few years ago home improvement shows were really popular.

The other four digital channels have turned out well. I have regularly watched all of them.

  28. VMan August 14, 2009 at 2:08 am -

SevenD – it’s a pun of 70 and you get the digital initial thrown in there as well :P

  29. Russell August 14, 2009 at 1:52 am -

“Factuality” as the network name. A network devoted to factual series and ‘real’ life TV type shows. Some lifestyle programming too. Or

“7XD” as the network name. (7xDigital) a gen ent network.

  30. Michael August 13, 2009 at 11:38 pm -

Excellent news, something is finally happening at seven.

    Possibly 77!!
    (note 2 exclamation marks)
    7 again, 7 latter, 7 after
7 plus, oh it sounds like time shift to me.

possibly its a time shift sd channel and seven just might use the hd channel as did channel ten had done with one,
3 multichannels, seven maybe be the only network to use all 3 channels differently.
7sd, 7plus and say 7movies on hd or 7 news channel on hd or 7 lifestyle on hd,
anyway its only a name whats the content thats the real question.

After this, i want all the commercial networks and sbs to launch a 3rd sd channel. and the abc a forth sd channel,
or is that to much of a big ask?

  31. Jed August 13, 2009 at 11:29 pm -

i want see all old classic tv shows. From the 90s and 80s. Blue Heelers, Hey Dad, Water Rats, All Together Now etc woudl be good to see them all again. And Full House, Alf, Step by Step. I used to love these growing up.

  32. bindi August 13, 2009 at 11:25 pm -

7PLUS is the best of those, 7TWO just looks like a dodgy radio station. i hope stargate turns up on this channel coz they aren’t putting on the current channel, timeslots keep opening up and they keep on putting something else on instead. some movies would be good too, GO should only have one CSI night and the other should have been movie night, so maybe 7 will give us some movies.

  33. Natasha August 13, 2009 at 10:30 pm -

@Jake-You want another sports channel? One isn’t enough???

I vote for a movie channel though. That will be cool.

  34. Neil August 13, 2009 at 10:22 pm -

7plus is better than plus 7

  35. Sharpy August 13, 2009 at 10:15 pm -

I’d definately be happy with a combination of movies and old and new tv series… as for a name… hmmm…

  36. Bogues August 13, 2009 at 10:13 pm -

What about 7+2, a timeshifted Seven. I have fears this is what they are going to offer. Anything with the 7 logo in it, seems to indicate that it is going to have similar or same content with the main channel (much like ABC2 and SBS Two). As opposed to Go! and One which offer unique content from the main channel.

  37. Craig August 13, 2009 at 9:57 pm -

So not everyone will be happy no matter what they do. Some want News, others Movies and then there is Lifestyle or general entertainment. IMO the best alternative is a mix of all these and encore airings of some of it’s top shows would be nice.

  38. Regan August 13, 2009 at 9:51 pm -

I’d like to see them do a movie channel.

  39. R August 13, 2009 at 9:15 pm -

Looks like it’ll be a case of Seven registering a bunch of different names just to keep their cards close to their chest.

Highly doubt it will come out as the final name. Hopefully with all this delay in even announcing a channel let alone launching it, we’ll get it by the end of the year.

  40. Andrew August 13, 2009 at 9:11 pm -

i hope its as predicted earlier this year a lifestyle channel

  41. Craig F August 13, 2009 at 8:46 pm -

    NBC Lite?

  42. PD August 13, 2009 at 8:28 pm -

They could work out a station wide product placement with 7UP. Channel Seven would love that, any excuse to cross promote.

  43. JH August 13, 2009 at 8:26 pm -

    7… heaven? probably too long

    7up is probably trademarked :P

    Seventy7 ?

What would the digital channel number be again?

  44. Matt August 13, 2009 at 8:09 pm -

I’d like to see a news channel.

Seven could sell out of Sky, and set up a free to air news channel to challenge them. They’ve already got Sunrise. They could then package up stuff, have lots live coverage through the day, and maybe a primetime news-talk show with Andrew O’Keefe.

  45. Ryaneco August 13, 2009 at 8:08 pm -

Urgh I really hope this is not a timeshift channel. And trust Seven to brand their name all over it. At least Nine and Ten had the decency to brand their network something to make it semi-independant and stand alone. Like having a brand new network rather than a spin-off of the main channel. Which all Seven sound like they’re doing.

I really hope there is original programming. I am not interested in the slightest watching home and away at 9pm.

  46. timmy August 13, 2009 at 7:23 pm -

It would be truly pathetic for Seven to have waited all this time, only to produce a +2 time shifted channel.

Let’s hope they can do better than that.

  47. Dino August 13, 2009 at 7:14 pm -

lol, I like the sound of 7 UP.

I wonder if Seven will buy the rights to The new Jay Leno Show. Could fill up a big chunk of this second channel.

  48. Jake August 13, 2009 at 7:01 pm -

Lets hope that Seven will have an up to date move channel or another sport channel. I would chose 7PLUS and what will they do to 7HD

  49. Earthquake August 13, 2009 at 7:01 pm -

All three of those names don’t seem that imaginative.

Either way, it doesn’t matter what the channel is called – it could be called The Toilet – as long as it has decent programming it doesn’t matter.

  50. Matt J August 13, 2009 at 7:01 pm -

    7up sounds good

but what ever… i might not even watch the channel as I don’t even watch 7!! Oh cept for the other week… when Amazing Race was on. More of a 9, GO! and Ten guy and occasionally ABC1, ABC2, SBS ONE and SBS TWO haha

  51. Travis August 13, 2009 at 6:57 pm -

7PLUS or 7TWO, sounds like a time shifted channel.

  52. jezza August 13, 2009 at 6:56 pm -

Cant wait to see if SC in tassie will put this on. . not holding my breath

  53. Brodie August 13, 2009 at 6:50 pm -

7 Plus sounds the better of the two, but both are very ininspiring.

Hopefully it ends up as another general entertainment channel, I don’t understand why it needs a theme.

  54. Andrew August 13, 2009 at 6:29 pm -

Was some marketing genius paid heaps and heaps of money to come up with “7Plus” or “Plus7″? That’s the most creative branding they could come up with? It’s boring, predictable and unimaginative.

At least One has some significance as the digital channel number, and GO gives a point of difference to the main 9 channel. ABC2 and SBS2 are unimaginative but understandable as branches of the national broadcasters. 7Plus just seems like they’re out of ideas.

Amazing too that Mr Leckie claimed back in February to having very solid and exciting plans about digital but six months later the best that can come out of it is a lame channel name that any pre-schooler could have come up with.

  55. DP August 13, 2009 at 6:29 pm -

David – in the article, I think you mean “even execs at Nine and Ten…”

    @PD – I think “7UP” might be trademarked already…

My money’s on 7PLUS. Sounds more better-er :) Now, if only we knew what programming it will run!

  56. Regan August 13, 2009 at 6:26 pm -

I’d like to see movie channel.

  57. what_tha August 13, 2009 at 6:24 pm -

That’s horrible… 7Plus sounds like it’s a time delay channel… and Plus7 sounds like a kids mathematics show… They need to think a little harder with this one… How about “7T” (seventy), “Shine”, or going with their link in with Yahoo, call the channel “Yahoo” or something along those lines??
    Just an idea…
Originality is the way to go “One” and “GO!” are good, and Channel 7 needs to match them, if not out”Shine” them

  58. Andrew B August 13, 2009 at 6:14 pm -

@ Ted “8″ would cause confusion for regionals where 9 affiliates are channel 8, 80, 88, etc. 7 would have to use 6, as PRIME is on channel 6, 60, 61, 62.

  59. Andrew B August 13, 2009 at 6:12 pm -

The 7HD date was October 15 2 years ago. Also October will be same time GO has its major launch. Maybe 7 will keep the same branding over the two channels by using something like 7 Plus. “7 TOO” on channel 72 was one though I had.

Past rumours have suggested that the channel could be lifestyle based or even news based. Lifestyle would see more of Better homes and gardens, border security, great outdoors, airways and the like – factuals and new idea tv, etc.

  60. Dean August 13, 2009 at 6:11 pm -

    I prefer 7PLUS.
PLUS7 sounds like a new Foxtel timeshift channel.

  61. Jellyman August 13, 2009 at 6:10 pm -

I say Channel 77 (66 for Regional Viewers) to be called Seven Life

  62. Kuttsywood August 13, 2009 at 6:04 pm -

    Knowfirst is onto something…

Building on his idea, why not 7Tee7, meaning “seventy seven”, the channel number.

  63. Stan August 13, 2009 at 5:56 pm -

Hmm… Maybe they’ll save some money & dust off C7, while using the same logo – the name C7 doesn’t really scream sport to me anymore.

Looking at the other commercial networks & their second digital channels, the trend in branding these new channels seems to make them completely unrelated to the mother channel (One & GO!). Without on-air cross promotion, Average Joe wouldn’t know who owned who…

As for the public broadcaster networks, it’s too easy to chuck another number next to the main name (ABC2, ABC3 & SBS2). With extra funding in mind, ABC & SBS could go on forever naming their extra digital channels!

  64. Daniel August 13, 2009 at 5:47 pm -

I hope Stargate gets put on the second 7 channel >_> I own them all on DVD buy hey..

  65. Ted August 13, 2009 at 5:44 pm -

    How about 8?

  66. Eli August 13, 2009 at 5:43 pm -

    hurry up network7

  67. PD August 13, 2009 at 5:43 pm -

What about 7UP?… Of those three I’d have to say 7PLUS, but either way you’re going to be left with some mathematical confusion:
“What do you want to watch ’7PLUS, 9, 10, One?’

“Woah, slow down, okay start again. 7 Plus 9. 16. Alright then 10? 26. Numbers confuse me man, let’s watch Go!”

  68. Knowfirst August 13, 2009 at 5:31 pm -

Why not 7Heaven and run evangelical programming all day ;)

Or 7Teen and play teenage stuff from Disney.

Or 7Tee and play Matlock, Beverly Hillbillies and Fantasy Island.

    I need my medication…..

  69. Rabbit3 August 13, 2009 at 5:30 pm -

labratqld on dtvforum.info found the name “redroom” was lodged by Seven on the same day. It has a Play symbol in the 1st O, and Fast Forward in the 2nd O. Sounds a little bit adult to me, but different at least.

Hard to tell if this is a possible channel name or something else. They sure have been busy with their lodgements though!

  70. Natasha August 13, 2009 at 5:21 pm -

    How about 7+ not 7Plus?

  71. Tepee August 13, 2009 at 5:17 pm -

Quite pathetic that they haven’t thought of a decent name after all this twiddling of thumbs during which Ten, Nine and even SBS have all launched secondary channels. By the way, why does it have to be “7PLUS” and not “7 Plus”, in the same vein of THIS afternoon and homeMADE?

  72. mikeys August 13, 2009 at 5:13 pm -

Depending on programming, what about “Better than 7″?

  73. Peter August 13, 2009 at 5:11 pm -

I think it depends what channel its going to be on. If it will end up on ch 72 then ’7TWO’ whould make sense. When i first saw ‘PLUS7′ and ’7PLUS’ i thought of a timeshifted channel, so hopefully im wrong there. But by having the number 7 in its title, i think they’re trying to associate it with the main ch7, whereas with ch9, they didnt use the number 9 in its title, which makes it feel like a completely new and seperate channel.

A general entertainment channel similar to GO! is possible. True that ch7 dont have as many quality programs sitting on the basement shelf as nine did, but theres still plenty of programs to broadcast. Instead of serials on weeknights in primetime, why not movies some nights? Not necessarly blockbuster movies, but straight to DVD movies or something aswell. Maybe bring back the stargate franchise. Fasttrack shows like Heroes and Lost into primetime, then replay on the main channel at midnight for those without digital. I think we might see alot more repeating of ‘main ch7′ primetime shows on this channel. What will be intresting is to see what they will put in the 6pm-7pm slot.

All up, hurry up and say something ch7, the suspense is killing me. Plus, then we can all stop wasting our time trying to guess, and actually start discussing it!
Whoever said that this new channel will launch on the same day 7HD launched might be right. Was it late October?

  74. steven g August 13, 2009 at 5:10 pm -

Please 7 will give us some brain food and real variety on your new channel and not reality rejects and repeats. 10 sports has cornered it’s market nicely whilst GO is just sad. So 7 what are you gonna do ?

As for repeats I will accept old horror movies like the ones I used to watch as a kid !

  75. Rabbit3 August 13, 2009 at 5:04 pm -

I prefer 7PLUS. PLUS7 sounds too much like a needy reminder “don’t forget PLUS7!” And 7TWO is just lazy.

I like “7 Next” more though, but that was lodged back in 2001, and nobody could claim Seven is that forward thinking.

  76. Craig August 13, 2009 at 5:04 pm -

7ELEVEN sounds good to me

I’d say a name will depend on the content.

  77. John August 13, 2009 at 5:01 pm -

7 two and be radicla transmit on channel 72 !

or how about (tongue in cheek)
    7 One 9
    GO 2 7

  78. Paull August 13, 2009 at 5:00 pm -

Not a fan of the name, it’s a bit bland. Surely they could come up with another name that possibly didn’t even incorporate the name 7 in it?

Or if they wanted to incorporate 7, why not open up Channel 77 again and just call the channel ’77′, or use 72 and call it 7(squared) because the channel number incorporates a 7 and a 2.

  79. David Knox August 13, 2009 at 5:00 pm -

Special thanks to TV Tonight’s intrepid readers for this tip….

  80. Mac August 13, 2009 at 4:56 pm -

All awful. I respect 9 and 10 for choosing an anti-eponymous name and hope 7 will go the same.
