Row over cancelled Tassie series

A TV series designed to promote Tasmania which was cancelled in April still has state politicians in a flurry.

state-tasmaniaA political stoush is brewing in Tasmania over the cancellation of a TV series designed to promote the state.

The series was set to promote the state as “a great place to Live, Work, Visit, Study, Invest and Trade” but in April Treasurer, Michael Aird cancelled a call for tenders for the $500,000 series saying, “While the idea for the series was a good one, it cannot be justified in these difficult financial times.”

He noted he had never given his approval for tender advertisements.

But ABC Online reports an email from his office lists the series as one of four projects he approved to “start moving”.

Tasmanian Opposition’s Peter Gutwein says the email contradicts Mr Aird’s explanation in parliament.

“His office was of the view that Michael Aird had signed off on this,” said Mr Gutwein.

“It certainly appears that Michael Aird has some explaining to do. His statements at the end of April completely contradict correspondence that was senf from his office in the middle of April.”

In a statement, Mr Aird says the email does not show final approval for the series.
