Seven journeys to the Edge of the Universe

By David Knox on August 7, 2009 / Filed Under Programming 11

jeuHere comes another doco on Seven: Journey to the Edge of the Universe.

In this National Geographic special, we journey from Earth’s surface to the outermost reaches of the universe on a grand tour of the cosmos, to explore newborn stars, distant planets, black holes and beyond.

Filmed entirely with computer graphics, the doco is told in one single, camera movement. The production process is said to be more like an animated movie than a documentary. Producers spent several weeks storyboarding every single scene with a graphic designer, working out how each planet would appear in vision – as a pan, a zoom, or maybe sometimes with a rotate.

Update: As expected, 7:30pm Mon Aug 24.

@David M … I agree completely, real shame. It’s for these sorts of reasons that Channel BT is so popular …

Shame that they cut a 91 minute movie down to 42 minutes of programming, 14 minutes of commercials and four minutes of Channel 7 news update and promos.

Journey to the Edge of the (celestial) Block would have been a more appropriate title, given it ended at Alpha Centauri and left out a few of the more interesting sights along the way (eg Europa).

This was rated the best show of the the day by The Guide (Sydney Morning Herald television). I wonder whether they were given the 42 minute hack or the full movie to review?

If you want to see the full version in one go (as Seven has a habit of editing these types of shows) it will be in National Geographic again next week Saturday 29th, and re-run Sunday, check your PayTV guides.

I often find with these types of docos that they spend so much effort on the graphics that the information content is pretty low. Flashy CGI is no substitute for substance. Also, NG are sometimes a bit iffy, pandering to the lowest common denominator (in the US that is ;-) .

@Michael, LOL! I think it’s time you found another bone to chew on.

I see the running time is 2 hours. Wonder if 7 will show all 2 hours in one hit or split it over 2 nights?
Also – it’s available in HD – will we get to see it in real HD on 7HD?

What’s this an intelligent program on 7? I’m fascinated with astronomy so this will be on must watch list.

Nice to see 7 taking a risk with some decent tv that doesn’t insult your intelligence.
