Cast changes tipped for Criminal Intent

Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian are all expected to be phased out of CI's ninth season.

law-order-criminalMajor cast changes are expected in the ninth season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Eric Bogosian are all expected to be phased out at various points during the season.

(The very much alive) Jeff Goldblum, who joined the cast last season, will remain as lead detective in the series along with Saffron Burrows, who was recently cast to replace Julieanna Nicholson.

Details about D’Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian’s exit are still unclear.

Goldblum’s appeal is said to be more in sync with that of the USA Network, on which the show now runs, interest in lighter fare. The network also screens Monk, Psych and Burn Notice. The show moved to USA from its sister station, NBC.

While D’Onofrio is departing as a regular, it is possible for him to reprise his character in guest stints.

UPDATED: Vincent D’Onofrio confirms his CI exit and says he may pop up from time to time.

  1. I’m not keen on CI without Goren, but I do believe that Goldblum could carry the show from this point. And given Goren seems to be almost a different man to the early seasons, perhaps this is for the best.

  2. Jeff Goldblum has done CI wonders. CI may, just may, have a chance of surviving with a major cast shake-up like this. If this was SVU without Meloni and Hargitay, then it wouldn’t last for half a season. L&O Original will go one for years to come thanks to it’s revolving door cast.

  3. goldblum is shocking on c.i but i must say he isnt much worse than the other 2, the chick who wants to be a man and a guy who cant put 2 words together and speaks like a slow! thank god they are going!

  4. Vincent D’Onofrio should really have stuck to film. While he’s a great actor, after hearing about his complaints about this job (it was too strenuous, necessitating a secondary lead to step in), it really seems like television is not for him.

Casting Jeff Goldblum was probably the best move they made.
