Celebrity MasterChef names still simmering

By David Knox on September 3, 2009 / Filed Under News 47

cmTEN only revealed six names in Celebrity Masterchef tonight on The 7PM Project.

They are Sports columnist and author Peter FitzSimons, Kathleen de Leon Jones, Swimmer Eamon Sullivan, The Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges, Australia’s Next Top Model judge Alex Perry and SBS newsreader Indira Naidoo.

The six will join the already-confirmed Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.

Update: SBS current affairs presenter George Negus is also expected to be confirmed.

With 18 names in total there are still quite a few names yet to be disclosed, potentially including Vince Colosimo and INXS’s Kirk Pengilly.

During a live cross to the MasterChef kitchen, TEN’s link also dropped out, prompting host Charlie Pickering to throw to a commercial break.

The series premieres 7:30pm Wednesday September 30th.

Master Chef is going to be the worst show in history Because of the celebrities! Isnt it supposed to be about “real” life people competing doing something they love and are good at? not about people who were once famous and now their dosh is running out lets give them a spot on the show and pay them to be back in the limelight and attempting to cook wothout their personal chef on hand ha!

    @ Timmy.

uh – I’m sorry, that I don’t watch Australia’s Next Top Model and thus did not know who Alex Perry was…

I really should grow up a bit, and switch on Top Model!…

  3. John Jackson September 4, 2009 at 10:39 am -

Nooo! Not Michelle Bridges. Really wish she and Shannon didn’t join The Biggest Loser in Australia. Much preferred Bob and Jillian.

  4. Michael September 4, 2009 at 10:03 am -

moderately well known celebrity masterchef Australia
is what this show should be called.

  5. David Knox September 4, 2009 at 9:48 am -

Yes TEN is usually good for welcoming rival personalities.

  6. steph September 4, 2009 at 9:45 am -

bad cross promotion last night, I agree – couldn’t watch it. But looking at the names for MC, not really making me dance for joy but impressed again with Ten for their ability to use other network ‘personalities’

  7. Johnson September 4, 2009 at 8:30 am -

@ Harry: Herald Sun has named Rachael Finch even though she told the Daily Telegraph (Herald Sun’s sister paper) that she rejected the offer, because of her “rusting” cooking skills.

  8. Rob September 4, 2009 at 8:22 am -

how desperate will these people to pretend they have “always loved cooking” and “just a passion for…”

  9. steven g September 4, 2009 at 8:02 am -

But I would really love to see Doug Mulray on this show !

  10. steven g September 4, 2009 at 8:02 am -

I like the celeb list too. Its not full of fallen Idols or ex Housemates. No biggest losers trying to regain what they lost. And thankfully there isn’t a sign of anyone under 20 because they would have to bring their mum to cook for them, lol !

  11. Craig M September 4, 2009 at 7:53 am -

All Ten need to do now is add Kyle Sandilands and the disapointment will be absolute.

  12. Ruth September 4, 2009 at 6:32 am -

LOL @ Tony H “Why does Alex Perry need sunglasses in a kitchen? Stove on too high?”
Dharling Alex is a fashionista and the sunnies are a necessary accessory !!
Actually they are probably prescription lens…….

The mix of ‘celebs’ for MC is OK, quite a nice mix.
Just had a small prob with Anna Bligh being there…..but I’m over it now.

  13. cjschrissouth September 4, 2009 at 5:13 am -

    @Ruth I agree!
everyone says its rubbish but i love it and would rather it then more Friends repeats.

  14. Neon Kitten September 4, 2009 at 3:45 am -

I was amused at the way they kept insinuating that the celebs had to “qualify” to be part of the show, when the real fact is that they were solicited by the show’s producers and offered a flat per-episode fee to be on it.

  15. timmy September 4, 2009 at 12:18 am -

Brodie – it probably says more about you than anything. Maybe it helps to be – uh – let’s just say over 25.

  16. Todd September 4, 2009 at 12:09 am -

TEN’s Late News also revealed George Negus as one of the celebrities revealed on The 7pm Project. It must have been a mistake, but they showed his picture and said his name.

  17. Tash September 4, 2009 at 12:08 am -

    mmmmm…Eamon! Poor guy on 7pm though :p

The Masterchef list looks interesting, and even though i have the name to get me interested, the others arent that bad either.

Is INXS’s Kirk the guy marrying Layne Beachly, or whoever that Dancing With the Stars girl was?

And i love Alex Perry. So yay!

  18. John September 3, 2009 at 11:52 pm -

you know I kinda like that its not full of fru fru people. Not sure a nicole kidman type would even know how to cook a meal. Its like a slightly upgraded version of the original MC, i can get behind that. And in an interesting turn of events, I really liked the 7pm show…funny.

  19. David Knox September 3, 2009 at 11:28 pm -

Janey one day you’ll need to defend Nine or Seven or at least question TEN’s moves. Just to shake things up a bit?

  20. Janey September 3, 2009 at 11:13 pm -

David, the hour show was obviously a hook to get people to sample 7pm Project again. A blatant cross-promotion! Shame on Ten…no other network ever does cross-promotions to help out other shows (yes I’m being sarcastic if you hadn’t already guessed).
The big question is…did it work? Hands up if you watched 7pm Project tonight just for the Masterchef announcement and you’re not a regular viewer?

  21. Tony H. September 3, 2009 at 11:11 pm -

Maybe they’re glued there. They were in the same position in every episode of ANTM.

  22. Tony H. September 3, 2009 at 11:09 pm -

Why does Alex Perry need sunglasses in a kitchen? Stove on too high?

  23. Brodie September 3, 2009 at 11:09 pm -

Clearly the term celebrity is being used very loosely, as most others have noted.

I just had to google about half of those names as I had no clue who they were…

  24. Kuttsywood September 3, 2009 at 11:01 pm -

    … Ten is cheap, David?

  25. Tony H. September 3, 2009 at 10:58 pm -

Can’t wait for Nathan Rees on Celebrity Biggest Loser.

  26. David Knox September 3, 2009 at 10:58 pm -

On another note…. we needed an hour to reveal six names because….?

  27. Tony H. September 3, 2009 at 10:57 pm -

I think Mikeys has been eating Ftzsimons’ curry. Didn’t undestand a word he wrote.

  28. Sillygostly September 3, 2009 at 10:51 pm -

They’re not celebrities if the majority of the audience need to be told why they’re supposedly “famous”. -.-

  29. Harry September 3, 2009 at 10:36 pm -

Apparently Rachael Finch is going to be on it too but shes too famous for the 7PM Project! It will be a success, people will love it and it will rate well, its MC!

Well the ad TEN had going on said theyd only reveal 5 David, so I guess that was all we couldve expected. I like Michelle Bridges and Eamon Sullivan so far.. Alex Perry will do well because he is really creative. Dont know if Vince Collosimo will be on it but TEN might snatch quite a few loyal Underbelly Fans with him on the show..

  30. Tepee September 3, 2009 at 10:17 pm -

I’m happy with the contestants revealed so far. I’m quite surprised that I actually know who they all are, and as others have said they seem to be a diverse bunch. I wonder if Lisa Wilkinson will be able to keep her mouth shut about MasterChef seeing as her husband’s on the show but she’s on Nine.

Also very pleased that TEN haven’t done a “Dancing with the Stars” or an “It Takes Two” and piled their own network personalities on the show. So far the only TEN alumnus is Michelle Bridges and she seems to an interesting choice in that we’ll see whether she can practise what she preaches about food!

  31. mikeys September 3, 2009 at 9:56 pm -

Who? What for? What show? Why??? Whatever….

Keep it to the potent ‘real’ version as an annual, or heck, bi-annual even series…

  32. Michael September 3, 2009 at 9:49 pm -

    Alison Page

  33. newtaste September 3, 2009 at 9:47 pm -

Just heard Peter Fitz interviewed by Stuart Bocking on 2UE. Fitz says he loves cooking and likes to add extra ingredients than what the menu says. He recalled that when he was writing Kim Beazley’s bio, Kim and wife Susie visited Fitz and Lisa for lunch and Fitz cooked a curry. Thinking the recipe didn’t have enough curry, Fitz doubled the amount. Lisa and Susie found it too hot and couldn’t eat it, while Fitz out of courtesy bravely kept eating to keep up with Kim. After he had finished eating, Kim huskily said it was a great meal but then couldn’t talk for another 10 mins.

Peter Fitzsimmons will be great on Celebrity Masterchef.

  34. PD September 3, 2009 at 9:28 pm -

Well said Janey. Despite their lack of mega star wattage they are a broad range of contestants from diverse fields. We doubted Channel 10 when they first came out with the original, and look how that turned out. I think maybe they know what they’re doing.

  35. timmy September 3, 2009 at 9:22 pm -

I agree with Janey – Ten has come up with pretty good celebs for this!

I would also agree with Kelly except she got “hear, hear” wrong (look it up).

  36. Jed September 3, 2009 at 9:16 pm -

I’d love to have Eamon Sullivan on a dish. I mean i’d love to see what Eamon Sullivan dishes up.

The list isn’t too bad so far. And agree with Ruth 7pm project was pretty good today. And up against 2.5 Crap and H&A you’d think it could do better, but the first week really turned people off and hasn’t been able to convince them back. It is a good show though. Kim is hopeless. Just put Jane Hall on the panel with Charlie and Carrie and perfect show.

They also handled the camera glitch well. If that happened in the first week they would have sat there frozen for 3 minutes not saying anything.

  37. Brenton Pappas September 3, 2009 at 9:11 pm -

Ten should be applauded for avoiding a Dancing with the Stars catastrophe and having a million employees from their own channel on it.

  38. Kelly September 3, 2009 at 9:10 pm -

Janey – Here Here! Very well said…..I for one am looking forward to Celeb MC and think the Celebrities so far are great! Its not like theres an ex Big Brother or Idol contestant on there……now that I would have trouble with…..

  39. Janey September 3, 2009 at 8:49 pm -

For those criticizing the names announced so far, I would love to know who you think is a celebrity if you don’t think a successful fashion designer, a medal winning Olympic swimmer, a current state Premier, and a former member of a world-wide successful children’s show qualify. Who were you expecting? Nicole Kidman? Russell Crowe? Cate Blanchett?
Ten have done well choosing (so far) a diverse bunch of celebrities of different ages and different backgrounds, but obviously the most important thing is that they have the same passion for food that the original Masterchef contestants shared. In the end, that’s all the viewer will care about.

  40. ryan September 3, 2009 at 8:29 pm -

love michelle bridges! she is hot and knows what she is talking about in the way of good healthy food. i think ten would leave the biggest names till last

  41. GuanoLad September 3, 2009 at 8:26 pm -

    Who?

  42. PD September 3, 2009 at 8:26 pm -

Just like the original series they’ve found an eclectic bunch of Australians… it’s a shame not a single one of them have that ‘I have to watch that!’ quality about them.

  43. Chris September 3, 2009 at 8:21 pm -

*wipes mouth with crevat* If I was served that list of names in a restaurant, I’d be asking for my money back.

  44. Ruth September 3, 2009 at 8:21 pm -

The 7pm project was quite good tonight! In fact its OK most of the time and I can’t believe it rates so badly considering the opposition of home and away, and two and a half men.
The 7pm panel bumble along rather well and we get a good laugh out of the show.

Other contestant we didn’t know about was Peter Fitzsimmons (Spelling?)

  45. T-Mac September 3, 2009 at 8:20 pm -

    LOL Michelle Bridges….

  46. Taz September 3, 2009 at 8:19 pm -

So, the others to be named are the actual *celebrities* touted in the show’s title then….

  47. angelsgal September 3, 2009 at 8:16 pm -

Im a little dissapointed. I felt the ep hyped this so much and there was no real big “Celebrity” announced. However, I think the diverse range of contestants and theres no real “Im so great, Im so hot” Gen Y bogan. The fact that they all love cooking is a good thing as well, as its what made the original. Having the girl from Hi5 will bring in the children who loved MasterChef so much, and an SBS Newsreader will help the show attract older viewers. MasterChef Australia had a diverse range of contestant and attracted 5 year olds to 90 year olds and its great ten have identified what made the original version a hit. It will either be a mega success ie: Celb BB or turn out like The Block2. Only time will tell
