Fifi Box: cheating death just to bring you the weather

Fifi_stuntFriday morning’s Sunrise episode nearly went haywire when a stunt involving weather gal Fifi Box nearly resulted in serious damage.

Box was standing in the line of a motorcycle stunt at the Royal Melbourne Show when two daredevils somersaulted their bikes over her. The second came perilously close to her head.

“Ooh – sugar!” exclaimed co-host Melissa Doyle. “That was a little close!”

It sure was.

Was the television spectacle really greater than the damage this could have inflicted on Box and Channel Seven’s reputation? Might be wiser to just do the weather back in the studio with a green screen? Old fashioned, but a lot safer to one’s person…

Fifi_seqFormer Sunrise weather guy Grant Denyer took months to recover from his monster truck accident, but at least that was on his own time.

    What’s a Fifi Box???
Anyway, it’s an optical illusion. Use a telephoto lens to compress the perspective and suddenly the motor cycles are soaring over our heroines head.
No worries mate – that Box was safe.

Fifi had mentioned how much her fear of heights was freaking her out just before the stunt. It’s obvious from the clip that she’s not close to the edge of the ramp nearest the camera, so probably roughly at the centre point – on the line the bike is trying to land on. A bike doing a 360 degree loop mid-air is hardly going to be looking to land far off the centre line of such a narrow ramp, so the ‘smoke and mirrors’ call is a bad one. Also, Sunrise didn’t replay the second jump the whole morning – only the first. Pretty obvious they were trying to pretend it never happened.

Yep “sugar” is right, happy to amend…

We can see the “up ramp” is less than the width of a van, the down ramp looks to be about the width of a truck. Still pretty close for a margin of error….

  4. Rutzie says:

I’m pretty sure Mel said sugar not shit and I think the angle is a bit deceiving as I think the riders line was just behind where Fifi was standing.

  5. Jerome says:

sucked in, GuanoLad is right, David, didn’t you watch celebrity circus??? lol. toni pearon and outback jack did this.

it’s all smoke and mirrors, no one is ever in danger at these things. could you imagine the OH&S if it wasn’t? i mean we have to have the hooks on our clocks checked every year by OH&S so that they don’t fall off the wall and possibly bruise someones shoulder.

  6. Another lol for kochie looking at Mel after she said s**t

  7. Cleavy says:

Get Fifi off my tv ASAP!

  8. GuanoLad says:

I think you’ll find that not only were they further above her than it looks, they were also behind her, judging by where you see them land relative to Fifi. She was always going to be perfectly safe.

  9. nick says:

idiots. just tell the damn weather

  10. Tony H. says:

What moron came up with that idea?

  11. TVTonightKiiD says:

Fifi is an awesome weather presenter… so funny and makes me laugh in the morning. But she should stop doing stupid things like this. This wont get Sunrise any extra ratings, but it could get her a ticket to the hospital.

  12. Curtis says:

Fifi should be glad that she is still alive – the Seven Network should have a lot to answer for here – the risk that was put on this lady is digraceful. This nearly became a catastrophe in front of thousands.

  13. weevil says:

    Pity.

  14. steven g says:
