Springbett came close to quitting

New Australian Idol judge Jay Dee Springbett says being on TV is "horrible."

jsAustralian Idol judge Jay Dee Springbett says he almost came close to quitting the show.

His anguish follows criticism of his style, branded by some critics and fans as too dull.

Being thrust in the spotlight from record executive to television personality has taken its toll on the new judge.

“I literally said I don’t want to do this any more, it got to that point,” he tells the Sunday Telegraph.

“It caused me a lot of anguish for a couple of weeks. I was stressed all the time, constantly on edge. Everyone’s like, ‘Oh it’s great you’re on TV’, but it’s horrible.

“But I came through that.

“I just want a fair go. At the end of the series if people are like, `He’s got no personality, he’s no TV star’, so be it.”

Springbett is also dealing with media gossip, including one magazine that is looking into his private life.

“They’re not even talking about my role; they’re trying to dig up the past,” he says.

Charming…

  1. “I just want a fair go. At the end of the series if people are like, `He’s got no personality, he’s no TV star’, so be it.”
Don’t underestimate the intelligence of the viewing public. They don’t need to see the whole series to realise that you have no personality and the only way you will ever be a ‘TV star’ is by entertaining your own delusions of grandeur.

  2. What is upsetting me most this year is this obsession with contestants identity. Dicko keeps banging on about Toby and last night Nathan. Who cares really. They are there to be judged on their singing. It is none of our business!

  3. I agree with Nathan except for the around next year part. Lets hope the ratings dwindle and this tripe never comes back again. I’m sick of these “talent” shows.

How about coming up with something new? What’s with it with production companies these days rehashing the same rubbish.

  4. this guy ia a complete loser! we dont need another marcia hines on the panel! he gives no constructive words for the contestants and prob the most boring host ever

  5. Well I think people should give him a break. He’s been employed as a replacement for Kyle Sandilands at the last minute with probably no experience working in television. Sure he’s dull and seems to have no personality (not that I would know, I don’t watch the show and am just going with what people are saying) but don’t forget he’s still new at TV and has no experience. Network Ten should be the ones being criticised because they’re the ones who employed someone who doesn’t specialise in working in TV which isn’t Jay Dee’s fault. At least they had the sense to pick someone who’s an expert with music, which is more than you can say for Kyle Sandilands or Ellen Degeneres.

  6. I think Jay Dee is doing a pretty good job, it is only cause his personality isn’t as abrasive as Kyle Sandilands that people are picking on him.

At least he knows what he is talking about and he makes sense and gives an informed and intelligent opinion, unlike Marcia Hines or even worse the ridiculous Paula Abdul on American Idol.

The problem with idol this year is not Jay Dee …. it’s that not one of the contestans is interesting, amazingly talented or in posesession of star quality, that is what is making the show dull and boring, not Jay Dee. It shouldn’t be about the judges anyway.

And at least Jay Dee is sexy to look at.

Give him a chance, he will get more relaxed as it moves along ….

  7. You have to respect this guy – I mean he’s come in, in the midst of controversy over Kyle Sandilands, with little to no television experience, onto one of the most hyped television programs. Filling Kyle’s shoes was never going to be easy for Springbett but at the end of the day Ten were damned if they did keep Sandilands and damned if they didn’t – they were either going to be media bashed by all the other networks, christian lobby groups, and probably politicians, or they were going to face (what is hopefully just an initial) backlash from its majority target audience. Springbett seems to have a really good perspective and his request that he just be given an opportunity and to have people judge him on his performance as a judge at the end of the series is, I think, a reasonable one.

  8. That made me laugh. An Idol judge whinging about being criticised. He spends all day destroying teenagers’ ego’s, telling them they’re boring and not stars. Then a little comes his way and he goes crying to mummy.

  9. “They’re not even talking about my role; they’re trying to dig up the past,” he says.

So, he is a record executive and he had no idea how people in the spotlight are treated? Geez, maybe he really is a bit dull.
