TEN locks in live AFL

By David Knox on September 1, 2009 / Filed Under Programming 11

aflblTEN has locked in its AFL finals plans for this weekend and will air the Brisbane Lions v Carlton game live into Brisbane on Saturday night on both TEN and ONE.

That puts it one foot in front of Seven which delays the game on Friday night in that market -but no surprises, there are no  Brissy teams playing then.

In Melbourne, TEN won’t get permission to play Saturday afternoon’s Geelong-Western Bulldogs live unless the game sells out. The network was declined permission to show the Hawthorn-Essendon game live last week.

If you have high def, there is really no choice with the game in high definition and 5.1 surround sound on ONE.

Saturday September 5 – Week 1 Finals: All games simulcast on TEN and ONE.

2.30pm – Second Qualifying Final: Geelong v Western Bulldogs @ MCG
Melbourne: 2.30pm
Sydney: 2.00pm (Live)
Brisbane: 2.00pm (Live)
Adelaide: 1.30pm (Live)
Perth: 12.00pm (Live)

7.30pm – Elimination Final 2: Brisbane Lions v Carlton @ Gabba
Melbourne: 7.00pm (Live)
Sydney: 8.30pm
Brisbane: 7.00pm (Live)
Adelaide: 6.30pm (Live)
Perth: 6.30pm

According to the AFL website, the Brisbane Lions-Carlton elimination final will shown live in all of NSW (including Sydney). I wonder who is right: AFL or Ten?

Great stuff from ONE/TEN! They are miles in front of Seven in terms of coverage of our great Australian game.
RE Sevens AFL Coverage into Queensland…I don’t see why Seven can’t show the Adelaide V Essendon game live at 8pm in Brisbane.
Australian football is much bigger in Queensland than it is in NSW. So I understand the delay into Sydney, but 8pm live into Brisbane sounds fair.
Plus there are no QLD teams playing in the NRL Friday? Surely plenty of Queensland sports fans want to watch a good old fashioned SA V VIC Elimination AFL Final over a regular season NSW Rugby League game?
    Come on Seven!
Show Friday night AFL Finals footy live into Brisbane!

@ slydoggie… because Ten dont have any huge rating shows like 7 do with better homes and gardens and the 6.00 pm sunday news service.

good to see that we finally will get some live football action, but really i am sick of the coverage on two networks. Channel 10 should have the rights and show it on OneHD every game they do right now live. On the SD channel onesd they can show other sports programming, Its called mult channel ! right now we get it on ten and one that does not make people want to get digital when they get it anyway.

    Thanks Jed. Corrected. And nope!

You’re not really an AFL fan are you David? It’s actually Adelaide v Essendon Friday night. So not an all Victorian game..

I honestly don’t see why Ten would be wanting to show these games live in Syd/Bris. Last weeks Sat game only rated 64 000 in Syd and 50 000 in Bris. Bring on a change to the anti-syphoning laws so these sports can be shown on One – that must be going through the minds of Ten execs right about now …

Why is it that Ten seems to be the only Network that will run live given the opportunity? It appears they request more live games of the AFL than any other network but frequently get knocked back?

    Thank God for TEN

David, since when did Adelaide become a Victorian team !!…. they play Essendon on Friday night in adelaide and there will be a 15 minute delay as per their nomal schedule of better homes and gardens before it.
