Call to close anti-siphoning’s “loophole”

Seven, Nine and TEN have called on the government to close a loophole that allows Pay TV channels to acquire sports events before free to air broadcasters.

The claim is submitted by Free TV Australia to the review of the anti-siphoning list. There were 322 submissions received, which are available for reading here.

In 2005 FOX Sports purchased rights to the Ashes series prior to any free to air broadcasters. Free TV says it is the channel providers who bid for sports rights, not the platform operators.

Everything old is (apparently) new again, with word today that Johnny Young is in discussions with Network TEN for a revival of Young Talent Time.

The family show was a contemporary of the revived Hey Hey it’s Saturday, running on air from 1971 until 1988. Variety is the current buzz word at the moment after Hey Hey’s success and the popularity of A Tribute to Don Lane.

Sharyn sticks with Seven

Brisbane newsreader Sharyn Ghidella has signed a lucrative deal with Seven said to be worth close to $600,000 a year.

Ghidella, who reads the weekend news, is believed to have been at the centre of a fierce bidding war between Seven and Nine, according to news.com.au.

It notes she was offered the 6pm daily role on Nine to replace Andrew Lofthouse, but the claim is denied by Nine.

A memorial celebration for Don Lane will be held at 11.30am next Thursday at Souths Juniors Rugby League Club in Kingsford, Sydney.

Close friends to speak will include comedian Brian Doyle and Lane Show gag writer, Mike McColl Jones.

Four Corners: Facing Dennis Ferguson

Monday night’s Four Corners promises a highly contentious episode, looking at the case of convicted paedophile Dennis Ferguson.

It asks “what does the community do with convicted child sex offenders when they’ve done their time?”

Last week Insight also looked at child sex abusers and the justice system.

Reporter Liz Jackson even speaks to Ferguson for the episode.

Former TEN exec joins FremantleMedia Australia

Tim Clucas, formerly Network TEN’s Head of Production and Development has joined FremantleMedia Australia as Director of Programming.

Clucas’ career  spans reality, lifestyle, and information-based programs with TEN, Beyond Productions and Nine, including securing the format, development and production of Big Brother.

He will oversee the production slate for FMA while also pursuing new formats, facilitate FMA’s client base and support new CEO, Ian Hogg.

ABC: Good Gamer “made life difficult”

ABC TV has issued a further statement in the light of the online feud that has spilled out from behind ABC2’s Good Game.

It denies statements made by Jeremy ‘Junglist’ Ray (pictured, left) that he was replaced because of gender and blames his behind the scenes performance allegedly making life “difficult for the rest of the team.”

Ray made comment on the Good Game message board following a joint statement issued by the members of the team that he has been replaced was because “they wanted a girl on the show.”

It’s art imitating life this Sunday on 60 Minutes, as Ray Martin becomes the subject of a Charles Wooley interview.

Martin publishing his autobiography will form the backbone of the story, with comments on his childhood.

The Roving Enterprises show has had a tough year, underperforming for the network on a Monday night.

Not every show on the network schedule was included in this week’s 2010 showreel (for instance 9AM with David and Kim, Before the Game, or Meet the Press etc), but given this has been a primetime show its absence does leave it open for speculation.
