Neighbours offers trainee scriptwriting chance

By David Knox on October 5, 2009 / Filed Under News 9

Neighbours6Once again the Australian Writers Guild has joined forces with FremantleMedia Australia to present the Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative, which gives AWG members the chance to work as a trainee storyliner for six weeks.

There are again two positions available for either new writers or those with experience in other areas of performance writing, with $5,000 each attached to the scheme.

The scheme is in its third year and Script Producer Lara Radulovich says, “It’s been a fantastic success. Two former trainees are now full time members of the team. They bring to the show a passion for storytelling, a love of writing, and a wicked sense of humour, which is exactly what we’re looking for. “

One of last year’s recipients, Elliott Devine was asked to stay on at the end of his placement and now has a permanent contract as a Storyliner.

FilmVictoria also offers similar opportunities on productions via its attachment scheme for Victorians seeking to break into the industry.

AWG applicants must provide a story idea for the serial using current Neighbours characters. So no chance of bringing back Afro Harold or Bouncer then…

The scheme is open to Full, Associate and Student members of AWG. Applications close 5pm Friday 16 October 2009.

@David Knox; thanks, ive already posted it on another Neighbours fansite I visit.

Its not really good enough to send to TEN really, but ive tried to write it, as if it was a real episode, the basic plot I think is solid but it would need more work, if I was actually going to send it to someone.

Even a ten year old can do a better job at script writing for Neighbours than the current hacks.

The show is so lame beyond belief.

It’s very easy (some would say a time honoured tradition) to sink the boot into Neighbours … but it is amazingly boring at the moment. I almost wish they were digging up the five-year-old scripts.

Gosh. Restrictive much? Not only would the writer need to adhere to an already strict classification regimen, but I’m assuming that they also have no choice in the casting. :-/

If it were up to me, my episode would be a single scene with Jackie Woodbourne and Stefan Dennis. Not sure how it would play out, but it’d certainly be the overall best acted Neighbours episode to come along in a long while. :P

Didn’t Kate Langbroek once write for Neighbours?

I hope that means the storylines might improve!
Or is that just wishful thinking on my part? ;)

They still use writers? I thought they just recycled old “scripts” from five years ago.
