Yep, it’s Mean Girls again

By David Knox on October 9, 2009 / Filed Under Programming 37

mean_girlsSure enough, Cady Heron, raised in the African bush country by her zoologist parents, but taking on public high school for the first time is set to do it all over again on TEN. Mean Girls is back 8:30 Friday October 30th.

It adds to TEN’s list of recycled films, including Love, Actually coming up soon.

TV Tonight readers have regularly commented on the movie repeats on TEN. Mean Girls was also voted the most repeated film on TV by readers of the Sydney Morning Herald last year.

Here is a selection of previous comments from TV Tonight readers about the film, which date back to March 2008:
-If Ten aired more films like Serenity and Devil Wears Prada and less monotonous crap like Mean Girls and About A Boy once every two months, then the problem wouldn’t exist.
-10 needs to pull their head out of mean girls asses!!! this movie sucks and rates bad everytime! it looks like david mott is going mental!
-Blimey, showing Mean Girls again? What is it with Ten and their “signature movies”? Mean Girls, Matilda, Terminator, About a Boy etc. They need something new.-I’m thrilled TEN is playing The Devil Wears Prada but admittedly I love Mean Girls and Armed & Fabulous too much.
-sheesh, does channel 10 have any other films other than How to Lose A Guy in Ten Days and Mean Girls, as well as About a Boy,Love Actually, and a few others? They really love repeating certain films every 6 months or so.
-I like that they play Mean Girls often. It doesn’t matter how many times they play it, I always tune in. If they keep on playing it then clearly the ratings must be showing it.
-“Mean Girls is back 6:30pm SaturdayFebruary 14th. How many times have we seen this one?”
is there any way to find out how many times ch 10 has shown mean girls in the last 2 years. Its almost like that experiment done in the 90’s when King of Comedy was played every week or fortnight at about 11pm for a month or so.
-not enough… i don’t mind re-watching the movies at TEN. Ofcourse i’d like new movies, but mean girls, about a boy… etc are all fine.
-It said that the movie ‘mean girls’ was on april 4, and it is repeated not even 2 months later on 30th May.
-Damn! Wasn’t Mean Girls on in March? It was right after something, I cant remember what, some special or something… but again?!?!?

Does this also mean that Nine are about to show The Wedding Singer soon too? They seem to always put Mean Girls on a Friday, is that when girls have their slumber parties? Even though I have it on DVD, I seem to find myself watching it almost every time it’s on, same with About a Boy.

Haha Mean Girls is definitelly an acception. I’d be happy if Ten Played it all day, every day. Only joking… but i seriously don’t mind a lot of repeats of this awesome show. Keep MG repeats coming i say ;)

I miss the crazy replays of Major Payne before Mean Girls was ever invented…

I think they shouldve repeated celebrity MC and not double simpsons repeats tonight. Well, last night if your technically speaking (its past midnight!)

Chris: Johnson has provided a prety good background to TEN’s movie matters. You have to feel for them being unable to get Fridays to work when so many of its audience are distracted. They’ve tried new Simpsons, Dance, Law & Orders, Medium…..and good shows like Dexter are shunted to the dead zone. What a world.

    @ Reubot

Ten have two versions: an edited PG rated version (I’m not sure what’s been cut) and the other M. They air the version which is best suited to the timeslot in which it airs.

I’m sure that the PG cut had been censored in-house by Ten (like The Simpsons Movie, which, mind you, was rated PG in its uncut form on DVD and theatrically -.-).

    Hi David

I’m interested in what is happening behind the scenes in order for Ten (well the others too, but Ten is the biggest culprit) to keep screening the same movies repeatedly. Is it because they rate well every time they are on? Are they the cheapest per expected rating point to play? I’m guessing the networks buy the rights to movies by a distributor, perhaps the rights say they can keep repeating them for little additional cost?

It’s not like there’s any shortage of blockbuster movies that could get a first time screening in their place. Maybe they’re just too expensive? I’m also intrigued if it’s the same people watching the movie repeatedly, or does the movie find a new audience each time? (That wouldn’t be an easy question to answer though).

It’s something that has interested me for a while, so if you know of any background that could put it all in context I’m sure many people would be quite interested (in a behind the scenes of programming decisions manner). Maybe it could even be a blog post perhaps? Just an idea anyway…

How many times do channel 7 play Grease starring Olivia Newton-John – not that Im complaining as it’s my favourite movie of all time!
Though I wish they would play a better quality version, do they still have the VHS tape??

  12. Alex October 9, 2009 at 8:24 pm -

Dont forget channel nine has ‘Ri¢hie Ri¢h’. that movie is played sooo much. once they played it 3 times in a row but all on different channels. First it was 9HD, then a week later it was on Go!, then a week after that it was on the main channel.. GAH!

Ten has mainly itself to blame with its small movie library, although outside factors (which are out of Ten’s control) also contributed. When Ten had the rights to movies made by Paramount, Sony and Universal Pictures, only a small number of them was hits (e.g. Jurassic Park, The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy from Universal, Men in Black and Charlie’s Angels from Sony and Mission: Impossible from Paramount). Then in 2006 Ten decided not to renew the output deal with Sony because the network thought movies did not rate on free-to-air TV anymore. Worse to come was in 2008 when Seven signed a new deal with Universal Pictures (which had merged with NBC in 2004 to form NBC Universal). This coincides with the period in which more big budget movies and hits were released by Universal and Sony. I was even surprised when I saw Mission: Impossible III and Transformers (both Paramount releases) were shown on Nine, meaning Ten is now left with new movies from 20th Century Fox while Seven and Nine have access to movies by other Hollywood studios. Was Ten unable to renew deals with Sony, Paramount and Universal because the network could not afford the large amount of money the studios demanded?

Mean Girls is one of my favourite movies but I would really love to see more new movies on tv. Or even older movies that haven’t been shown in the past few years.

  15. Todd October 9, 2009 at 6:09 pm -

Love Mean Girls… awesome movie, could watch it over and over again :)

  16. Jason October 9, 2009 at 6:06 pm -

A new challenger is arising though: Wedding Crashers is on again this week…

  17. As October 9, 2009 at 5:53 pm -

Mean Girls although not really my type of movie is quite smartly written by none other than Tina Fey (Channel Seven, I want a commitment on S4 30 Rock!). The problems of the film are highlighted heavily when you play the film as often as they do

George, I think you need to take a Maths lesson.
Hey²≠Hey Hey∵(1×Hey)×(1×Hey)≠2×Hey. If that makes sense.

  19. Amber October 9, 2009 at 5:22 pm -

Yay. Lindsey Lohan is the Best.

  20. tasmanian devil October 9, 2009 at 5:13 pm -

While it seems to be the topic, I’m also for Ten screening new episodes of Monk. I haven’t seen season 5 either because it was relegated to a midnight timeslot on the late Ten HD, which Tasmania didn’t receive.

  21. Vert October 9, 2009 at 4:49 pm -

I want Billy Madison! Haven’t seen it in ages!

  22. George October 9, 2009 at 4:36 pm -

    @Craig:

I agree! TEN should repeat their Wednesday lineup again for those who missed it because of Hey².
The ratings Celebrity MasterChef and NCIS: LA got were so low, but they deserve so much more! At least from repeating it again on another day they don’t loose the audience who weren’t able to get into it from Hey².

  23. Jed October 9, 2009 at 4:32 pm -

That must mean About A Boy is on next week.

I’m with Tomothy (Timothy???), how about playinn Monk, and Psych Ten. I loved Monk, and i’ve seen 2 episodes of Psych and liked what i saw.

  24. Reubot October 9, 2009 at 4:29 pm -

Do TEN own a edited copy, so they show it at whatever timeslot they like (The movie was rated M)?

  25. Harry October 9, 2009 at 3:42 pm -

Mean Girls is hilarious. I dont mind watching it over and over.. its more amusing than any other movie they play (unless its never been seen before).

  26. brisvegas October 9, 2009 at 3:14 pm -

it’s not like anyone is surprised with this news……..

  27. Paul October 9, 2009 at 3:02 pm -

Yes i knew it was due for another airing at some stage!! I did ponder when they would be broadcasting it again as they havn’t shown it since earlier this year when prior to that it had two airings between January and April. Prior to that it had more than 2 airings throughout 2008 aswell.

The movie itself isn’t bad, it’s fun lampooning tv networks for relying on repeats of repeats: Ch 10 and their love of Hugh Grant, Adam Sandler and Lindsay Lohan. Ch 9 and their love of Charlie Sheen and adult/toilet humour.

  28. Christopher October 9, 2009 at 3:02 pm -

If you want to watch movies on TV there’s this thing called Foxtel. Not sure why people get so crazy about this, it’s 2009, who watches movies on FTA anymore?

  29. Craig October 9, 2009 at 2:48 pm -

    @Frantelle – cheep ba#^$%!

Why not use Friday nights 8:30-11:30 to encore 3 first runs shows of the week, maybe use the www to allow the viewer choice?

  30. CrAig October 9, 2009 at 2:41 pm -

    Tess – and I would love punctuation….

I don’t see the problem with screening a film twice a year (which is what TEN have been doing with MG). If people like it they’ll watch it, and if they watch it, TEN will continue screening it. It’s not like they’re continually screening Battlefield Earth.

  31. Ryaneco October 9, 2009 at 2:38 pm -

No complaints; Mean Girls is bound to be as freaking classic!!!!! I love it! But also own it on DVD….twice Haha!!

  32. Damo October 9, 2009 at 2:37 pm -

    I want Happy Gilmore!

  33. tomothy October 9, 2009 at 2:32 pm -

Again? I’m sure I read a comment the other day on this site with readers guessing Mean Girls would be back soon after the announcement of Love Actually.
    How about they play:
    Monk Season 6,7,8,9,
    Psych Season 3,4
Although I have seen Psych, there are lots of people out there that have not, and Monk isn’t easily available by other means if you are playing catch up. I remember about 6 years ago, TEN had a good crime night on Saturdays – Monk, LA Dragnet (new version), some other show(s), then NYPD Blue.
TEN really need a 3rd channel to play what they dont bother airing on the main channel.

  34. JenC October 9, 2009 at 2:29 pm -

Do we all win prizes for predicting this would happen? Probably not, as Ten and Mean Girls is a sure thing.
I considered quite a while ago about picking up this DVD for my collection but decided I didn’t need to as it keeps being shown by Ten every couple of months. Thanks for saving me money Ten!

  35. Frantelle October 9, 2009 at 2:25 pm -

Knowing 10 they’ll run this in 4:3 like they do with Gladiator

  36. Tess1988 October 9, 2009 at 2:16 pm -

i missed it all the times its been on this year because of other things(going out or watching other movies) so i will watch it this time, i dont like the idea of networks repeating shows every 6 months or even old movies every year, and i would like see some new movies on every year, would i would love to see some movies on sevens second channel and also some more late movies on 10 and 9, and i would also like to see some late movies targeted to teens on go and abc2

  37. James October 9, 2009 at 2:04 pm -
